A Novel Clearance—The buck Flor
ence of London cleared at New York on Wed
nesday lust for the former port, with h cargo of
wine, amounting to 300 pipes of Oporto, which
die brought to New York about three weeks
since. It appears that England has imposed u
heavy duty upon wines imported from Portu
gal, and'the merchants, by taking out a clear
ance for the United States, and putting the car
go in bond here, mid again taking out. a clear
ance for her original destination, cheat John
Bull out of something like $4,5011.

Question and Answer.—Indy correspon

possible, us my physician snys, that n dry hec

u quantity ot hair, which he advises me to have

To which Major Noah replies:—“It may be

perspiration of serous humors, for want of such
discharge, may fall upon the lungs mid create
the cough. Cut your hair. Keep it thin and

A Woman out or her Black.—A Wash

graph :—
“Mrs. Swisshelm has taken a seat in that
portion of the Senate Gallery set apart for the
press—for convenience of seeing and hearing,
Init she is not reporting, and l believe does not.
even understand the method of short hand
used by Reporters. She is writing for her own
paper,the ‘SaturdayVisitor,’ andforthe ‘New
York Tribune, though not ‘for n living,’ I
presume, as she und her husband are possessed
of a very handsome property. She is us held
und fearless in character ns her writings indi
cate, hut a lady in the strictest sense of the
word ”
This Mrs. Swisshelm having made herself
notorious hv her masculine boldness and brazen
disregard for the proprieties of feminine char-
ucter, has become the protege of Philosopher
Greeley, whose isms and heresies, moral {reli
gious, ami political, are .working such wonders
on the tone of Northern and Western society
und morals.
ESF’The number of stores labelled “to rent,”
in this city, can be attributed to the raging of
the epidemic, called California lever.—Cin.

Ventures to California.—The Philadel
phia Ledger, in speaking of the ventures of the
merchants of that city in the California trade,
remarks as follows:
“ Sonic of the ventures to California by the
merchants of this city, though the sules werent
such high prices us to induce the hope of lianrl-
’some profits, by the balance sheets just now
coming to hand, show very little left to the ship
per, commissions and churges in port eating up
much of tho profits—in many instances all.
Much disappointment and dissatisfaction is ex
pressed.’’

TEA CULTIVATION IN THE UjfeTATES.
H AVING received a small supply of TEA NUT'S.
collected at great expense of mcnoy and labor,
in the middle districts of Chum, from tho most cele
brated Tea Plantations of the Empire, In prepared

ject i; to plant and cultivate: but as i Am quite cer
tain that 1 have obtained, after the labor of three
years, the be: t quality of Ten Nuts, I am disposed to
meet the wishes of the public, and to share them
with otiieii.—Tea Nuts g-therSd in the .neighborhood
of Canton are scarcely worth cultivating, on account
of the inferior quality of the Tea. It is obviously the
interest of the planter to submit to nn increased ex
pense, to secure a superior quality of Tea Nut, in es
tablishing a Tea Plantation, whether large or small.
In prosecuting this arduous undertaking, I am in
fact acting as an agent for-the benefit of the public.
Neither tiie State, the public, or any individual, has
over extended to me the aid of a single cent.
For convenience mid security, the Nuts will be
packed in tin boxes, and forwarded from Greenville,
S. C„ by such conveyance and to such address ns the
purchaser may direct, to any part of the U. States.

the departure of Mr. Culhoun’s remains from

borne back to the South a corpse, again inten
ded by those now afflicted parents, in the same
conveyance which boro the corpse of his late
distinguished fellow traveller. Thus they
came and returned together—but under how
different circumstances.
