BY MARY LEMAN GILLIES. Though lowly my cottage and frugal its fair, Affection and truth and devotion are there; And when evening arrives, and the day's toil is o'er, Then my husband a comes home and I bar up the door, He goes to the bed where his little ones lie, And I know the sweet lighttliat then beams in his eye. And he turns to his supper, whate’er it may be, With a kindness of heart that is heaven to me. 1 love him too well to repine at my fate— Frugality still keeps the dun from our gate— And I hope that our children may rise to repay. The toils and the sorrows that wear him away. Oh ! zealous and holy and pure be their youth I -May they hear from my lips only kindness and truth I And, when Mercy’s mild messenger bears me from life, Leave my memory dear as a mother and wife I Marriage among the St. John Indians.— The editor of the Enstport Sentinel thus des cribes the manner of wooing and wedding among the St. John (N. B.) Indians, which he learned on a recent vist to their vilage, near Frederic ton: “When a young Indian wishes to take a wife, —nt which time lie (ms no idea who his copper- colored companion will be—he makes his wish known to his parents. The old couple then consult with the chiefs und matrons of the village, who discuss the mutter, and decide uponthe bride. Feasting and ‘pow-wows’ now commence, during which the candidates for matrimony are brought together, the bride so veiled that neithersheor her husband recognize each other. After marriage, which is attended with great ceremony, the, couple are separated for the space of fivedays—'when, the feasting, &c. being over, they unito p,s man and wife, and for the first time, each knows to whom he or she has been linked by the fates. I believe this custom approximate* very much to t.1at of the Chinese. Frequently In both cases I believe, the parents of the bridegroom are obliged to pay a price, as per bargain, to the parents who furnish the bride.” fNUMREJ accompnny the expedition to the North Pole, or to go by land with the Esquimaux amongst whom spme of his countrymen are missiona ries, in search of Sir John" Franklin. Letters from Rome, of the 31st ultimo, an nounce the escape from the prison of the Castle of St. Angelo,of Gazzolo, who had been sentenced to confinement in a monastery for his writings against religion and the Holy See, us also for conduct subversive of ecclesi astical discipline. ET A man by the nume of Reeves who wus recently drowned at Philadelphia, and whose body hnsbeen recovered, is thus describ ed : The body has on the left breast the figure of a ship in full sail, with the word “return” un der it. On the right breast there are a mule and female figure, and near them the word “hap py.'’ On the right arm is a monument and a cannon, with two female figures resting on the monument. On the left arm is a crucifix, God dess of Liberty, Stc., all done with Indiqink. O NE CENT REWARD will be paid by the subscriber tor the delivery to him in Gillison- ville, So. Ca., his apprentice, Alexander W. Crosby, now about 17 years ot age, fair complexion, straight light hair, and blue ey c s; who is legally bound to me bb a Blacksmith and Wheelwright: he having run away and gone to Savannah. H AVING received a small supply of TEA NUTS, collected at great expense of money und labor, in the middle districts of Chinu, from the most cele brated Tea Plantations of the Empire, 1 am prepared to fulfil my engagements by accommodating the pub- lie with a share of the Nuts received. My main ob- jeet is to plant and cultivate; but as I am quite cer tain that I have obtained, after the labor of three years, the best quality of Tea Nuts, I am disposed to meet thn wishes of the public, und to share them with others.—TeuNuts gathered in the neighborhood of Canton are scarcely worth cultivating, on account of the inferior quality of the Tea. It is obviously the interest of the planter to submit to on increased ex pense, to secure a superior quality of Tea Nut, in es tablishing a Tea Plantation, whether large or small. In prosecuting this arduous undertaking, I am in fuct acting as an agent for the benefit of tlie public. Neither the State, the public, or uny individual, has ever extended to me tlio aid of a single cent. For convenience and security, the Nuts will he packed in tin boxes, and forwarded from Greenville, S. C., by such conveyance and to such address as the purchaser may direct, to any part olYhe U. States. TEA PLANTS—now on their passage from China, selected with a single eye to quality, by a gentleman of large cxjierience in horticultural pursuits, and p r- haps better acquainted with the character of the Tea Plant, than any person in Europe or America—will also he shared with those desirous of obtaining a small supply.
