Republican of May 6. Attempted Suicide by a Stranger Lady —Painful Mystery.—A lady of prepossess ing manners and appearance arrived in the Southern train of Thursday night last, und took quarters at Jenning’s City Hotel. She was alone and a stranger, and gave her name as Hart. She spent the next day at the hotel, and on Friday night gnve notice that she should leave in the morning, and insisted on paying her bill then, though assured thut it was entirely unnecessary, as the cars did not leave until a lute hour of the morning. Previously, she had visited the drug store of B. K. Bliss, and pur chased of one clerk an ounce of laudanum, und subsequently of another nn ounce of arsenic. The latter article wns hesitatingly sold to her, but she assured the clerk that she wanted it to kill rats with. On Saiurday morning the porter of the hotel, on going to her door to call her, heard signs of distress ; and the women of the house hastened ito her room. They found her sick and vomit ing, and examination and her confession soon revealed that 3be had taken both laudanum and itrieni 1 ;, and that they had operated as an ov«r dose, and thrown themselves from thestomuch. She acknowledged her intention to kill herself, und gave -directions as to the disposal of her - clothes iand burial. A physician was sent for, who -noun removed all remaining immediate danger to iher life. The huly—for such she evidently is by edu cation and associations—still remains at the ■hotel, and iia in a comfortable slate, though on Sunday she gave some signs of a wandering mind. She -positively refuses to give nny clue whereby her real name or friends may be learn ed. And so careful has she been to remove every evidence of these circumstances, that all her garments, whifch are numerous and of an elegant and costly character, have had her name, originally marked on them, cut out bv scissors. She ulso destroyed two rings which are suppos ed to huve been engraved either with her nume nr that of someof her friends. It appears that she did not retire to bed at all on Friday night, hut passed the time previous to taking the pois on, in writing, but her productions in this res pect she destroyed so soon as she perceived that her efforts upon her life had been ineffec tual. Beyond these general facts, and the addition al one that she is about 24 years old, all is a painful mystery. Her evident claims to the character of u well-bred lady, the appearance of wealth und wealthy friends, which she exhib its ; her disgust of the world and her connec tions ; and her determined and evidently long conceived desire to escape from her friends anil go down to the grave, unknown to them, all these circumstances have combined to awaken a deep interest and anxiety concerning her among our citizens, to whom the facts we have reluted huve become known. It is to be hoped thut she may be restored to her full rea son and to her friends, if such she have i and also thut she will not be suffered to- leuve those whom her misfortunes have drawn around her, still others who can present more substan Lai claims to her regard and confidence, shall resent themselves. The Republican of the7th[inst sasy : The young lady whose unsuccessful efforts to destroy herself at the City Hotel, we have described, still remains there, and is quite un well from the effocts of the poison which she look into her stomach. On Sunday night she iad convulsions, and ferns were entertained for 'er death, but on Monday she was more checr- though still feeble. She still declines to 180 088 her history and her true name, and they jet remain a mystery. A clue has been found, lowevcr, which may lead to >he devolopomeiit n tho secret. Among her effects are u gold t umble, a silver spoon and a silver napkin p n f/ The former is marked “R. F. to R1 A. •i>, and.the two latter with the initials “R. A. •• which are thenco inferred to be those of er name. She represents, we are told, that t ie residence of her friends is a far distance 0 f. and that her troubles arise from a difficulty With her futhor; but will divulge nothing be yond. She is a beautiful and interesting young ®ay, and, as we have already said, gives evi- enco in her manners and in her rich wardrobe an “ plentiful purse, of belonging to a wealthy •mily We understand she now expresses re- ^.*t ** having made the rash attempt upon her A l*ter number of the same paper has the following: Suicide Mystery.—The young and un- wa ,ad . v at tho City Hall, who attempted suicide, continues to improve, and is likely to entirely recover. Nothing has yet occurred to shed fight upon the mystery which hnngs over her. She states, generally,wo hear, that she has been muiried—that her husband, who wus forced upon her by her father, against her choice, is dead and that her parent has desired her to make another repulsive alianco, to es cape which sho fled, and has attempted to destroy her life. Tho public can judge of the probabilities of this statement ns well ns our selves. She has both medicul and spiritual advises, (the latter being Rev. Mr Littlejohn of Christ Church,) suited to her taste, and with these and kind nurses, tho curious public should be content to leave her. H AVING received a small supply of TEA NUTS, collected at great expense of money and labor, in the middle districts of China, from the most cele brated Tea Plantations of the Empire, 1 am prepared to fulfil my engagements by accommodating the pub lic with a share of the Nuts received. Mydnain ob ject is to plnnt and cultivate; but as I am quite cer tain that 1 have obtained, after the labor of three years, the best quality of Tea Nuts, 1 am disposed to meet the wishes of the public, and to share them with others.—TeaNuts gathered in the neighborhood of Canton are scarcely worth cultivating, on account of the inferior quality of the Tea. It is obviously tho interest of the planter to submit to on increased ex pense, to secure a superior quality of Tea Nut, in es tablishing a Tea Plantation, whether large or small. In prosecuting this arduous undertaking, I am in fact acting ns an agent for the benefit of the public. Neither the State, the public, or any individual, lias ever extended to me the aid of a single cent. For convenience and security, the Nuts will be packed in tin boxes, and forwarded from Greenville, S. C„ by such conveyance and to such address as the purchaser may direct, to any part of the U. States. TEA PLANTS—now on their passage from China, selected with a single eye to quality, by a gentleman of large experience in horticultural pursuits, and p r- hups better acquainted with the character of the Tea Plant, thnn any person in Europe or America—will also be shared with those desirous of obtaining a small supply.
