MORNING NEWS. An Aged Ucoplk.—A writer in the Boston Traveller gives the following remarkable hi:- tory:— I know a man nnd his wife, in the Western part of Worcester county, who have lived to gether about 78 years. At tho time they were married, the mail was 18 and the woman 16 years of age; so that he is now about 96. They havo lived to follow io the giave one their descendants of the fifth generaiion. Ti e venerable patriarch has been a very active and useful man. He was, until more ihan 60 years of age, very fond of fun and frolic; and on nil public days he would have around him a de- lighted crowd, listening to his songs and merii- ment. I well remember the time when the old roan (between 60 and 70) stood up in the meet ing-house, and bef re a grent assembly told his religious experience. After he had gone through with his very interesting statement noticing a lurge number of his former tavern associates stnndi g in tho hack purt of tho house, he called to them and said, ‘’ Oh, my friends, you who have so often been delighted with my foolish songs, come, gnlher rouml me now, uiid I will sing to you the songs of Zion.’’ Although his songs are not ofien heard now, he still lives to benefit ihe world by his prayers. Steam Improvements in Porto Rico.—The first steam boat, to run upon the waters of Por to Rico, is to be built at New-York, nnd will he completed about 'December next, when it will commence plving between the City ol St. John’s and Cutano on the opposite sine of the harbor. Lorenzo Carbo, Esq., a native of that Island, has charge of the construction of this boat, which, we understand is to be n small one, of about 40 feet long. This is the first enterprise of the kind ever undertaken in Porto Rico. The idea had been long entertained by the gov ernment of that Island, and it s. ems nlmosi in credible that not a single application for con tract was ever mado. This fuct is sufficient to prove the want of mechanical enterprize among the inhabitants of Porto Rico. SOGLE’S HYPERION FLUID, for the hair 15 For sale by LAROCHE St GODFREY. Tho Amoskoag Co., will shortly stop 200 looms, und Ihe Sulmon Falls Co. have alreudy stopped one quarter, and will reduce the production one quarter more, making one-half. There is to be a gen eral curtailment of the manufacturing business throughout New England.—Boston Transcript, Attempted Murder sand Suicide in the Stale Prison.—A most desperate attempt to commit murder took place in tho penitentiary yester day morning. The parties were convicts ; one was named Kellogg and the other Henderson. R appears that Kellogg had, for some time, been foreman of the shoe-making department of the State Prison ; but, latwi ly, he had got to be very disagreeable, was cross, and extremely irrasci- ble. Owing to his disposition, he was removed from his position, nnd Henderson took his pluce. Irani the time of his removal, lie become jeal ous of Henderson, regarding him as the cause of his removal, and thinking Henderson hud "upplanted him in the good opinion of the keep- er of the prison. He, therefore, frequently threatened to take Henderson’s life; anil, 011 Friday morning attempted to put his threats into execution. While Henderson was stoop ing down to pick up a last, Kellogg sprung at him, and plunged a knife ut his body; but, sulk ing the intended victim’s back-bone, or ribs, it glanced off. Shortly afterwards, another uttack w as made upon Henderson by Kellogg, but they • were separated by Mr. William McIntosh nnd Kclliiggordereil to his cell. On his way thither, his conduct was such ns to induce Mr. McIn tosh to believe that Kellogg designed attacking him. He put his hands into his pockets and 3 poke very firmly to K., who then promntly obeyed tho order. After reaching the room, nnd while, it is supposed, he w as laying down, JB cut his o wn throat from ear to ear; and died instantly/ We havo beard the coolness and de- Cision of Mr. McIntosh warmly commended.— -Wot,7- Union, 17th uIt.
