MORNING NEWS.
Monday Morning, May"20, 1850.
The Montksquious on Bail —Gunsalvo
and Raymond de Moiitusquitiu* have been admit
ted to ball, ut St. Louis. Gonsalve in the sum
of $20,01)0 upon tho indictment of killing
Bninum, and $20,000 upon tho indictment of
killing Jones; nod Raymond the sum of $10 -
001) upon the first indictment, and $10,000 up
on the second. Suitable rooms'huye been pro
vided for them nt the St. ’Louis hospital, under
the care of the Sisters of Charily, where they
will remain until unother triul is had. The
Court grunted a commission to take depositions
in Illinois, New York und Canada, whifch de
positions are lube made evidence in the future
triul.
Russia and her Government.—We question
ii the tine state of the case as between the
Hus-ims and their Government is an genera!
rightly comprehended. Misled by ,»nr Wes
tern associations, und by the tales of Russian
insVfectinns, we nre too upt to suppose that
the Russian Government is held down over the
Russian people by the pressure of some t xti-t
ntfl lorre, undthut if this force were removed,
the Russians would exhibit Constitutional ten
dencies Rttd atrunge lor themselves otherwise.
We forget that there is not any evidence that
conttitutiiinulisin is a universal instinct among
even civilized men, und also, that the Russians
are yet a very rude nation- Were tho wholi
social condition ol Russia revealed to us in t
flash, >ve should probably find that Cz irism far
from being a system held down over Russia by
force, is a ovstem witnessed with a kind of re
ligious fervou'- and infutiintion by all tho real
heart of the Russian people. During the Rus
sian insurrection of 1825, Schnitzler tells us,
Sergius Motn aviefF, one of the leading eonspir
auirs, inprudently mentioned Republicanism
tu a regiment uf grenadiers, of which he was
colonel, and called upon them to cry “A Re
public for ever !” Puzzled us to the meaning ol
so new und singular a phra-e, and suspecting
something to be wrong; they hesitated ; and an
oi l grenadier, leaning on the barrel ol bis sun
spoke out for the rest. “Vacho blngurodi
said he,‘‘so please y -ur glare, we will shout
‘A Republic forever!’ or anything else you bid
us ; but Hfter all who is to be Czar ? ’ and the
colonel hnving explained that in n rrpub ic fhpre
was tio Czar, ‘‘Ah, then your grace,” said tbe
grttiudiet. “It will not do in Russiu,” Even
when shouting on that occasion for iheconsii-
tuti.'ti, the soldiers, it is well konown were und
the impression that this constitution was Con
8’untine’s celebrated Polish wife, w hose name
for sonqe pu'rprse or otlisr, their officers bad
thought it propor to bring forward in that pro
mint-iit way.
Manufacture of the Celebrated Damascus
Blades.—Nicoln Milanas, fur some time consu
in tho East, in endeavoring to discover the
process employed by the Kourds in the ninn-
ufacture of their sword blades, observed:—1.
Tluit the manufactories in which these blades
were made, were shinned nt the declivity of
the mountains, near cascades, tho wafer of
which hilling from rock to rock, arrived in the
most limpid state in the reservoirs constructed
for its reception, in which the b ad'-i tire tem
per -d. These reservoirs are themselves p aced
in situations tvjtere the air is very pure. These
conditions of poritv of.air and water are con
sidered necessary for the success ol tho oper
ation,
2. Iron of the purest quality is selected. Sub
mitted to a very high temperature, tho first,
tempering is comnv-uceti when the iron is ut
whim In ■at—tho inetnl is exposed before fusion,
the fuel employed being placed on ouch side of
it; the rod iiot iron is then covered as quickly
os pn-siblo with fatty and oily matters, paste
made from bones, wax, &c. This operation
tends, according to the manufacturers, to render
the blade fl 'xible. Tho second tempering
is oerforined by the same process, with this
difference, time the homed iron, ufier having
thrown off considerable quantities of sparks,
and having been exposed, is covered with paste
composed of powderod hones and purified
mutton suet,—The third tempering is effected
hv disposing the metal in such a manner, thnt
it m iy he scizad by a man on horseback, who
rid 3 a fpll gallop, in order thnt tho b’ado,
which h* koeps in an elevated hosttion, may tt>
ceive the impression of the air.
3. The ■fuel employed is anthtao'fo atid turf.
In order to obtain favorable results, it isneces-
sary to ttse fuel entirely free from sulphur, and
combine, as much as possible, [the heating of
animal, vegetable, and mineral substances.
