CHARLESTON, May 21.—The transactions were limited to 570 hales, at extremes ranging from 11} to 121c. The market was depressed, and prices were ra ther in favor of purchaseis. Per sohr Sarah Vose, for St Jago de Cuba 90,000 ft Sawed Timber. Money Matters, Trade, &c. NEW-YORK, May 17.—There is no change In the money market. Call loans are still negotiated at 4} a 6 per cent, anil prime paper 5 and 7 per cent. The balance in the Sub Treasury is $4,798,889, 97. Du ring the past week, severnl packet ships have arrived from London, Liverpool nnd Havana, all with fullcnr- goesof Spring goods, and in consequence, the receipts for duties nre largely on the increase. Business about town is very dull, and the jobbers are mostly preparing for summer jaunts to the coun try. Their stocks are very much reduced nnd the low price of summer goods of all kinds bring in a good many customers, nnd encourages tile hope that no larger amount will be kept over summer than usual. (Per Hibernia ) Liverpool, May 3d. COTTON.—The improvement in the demand for cotton, which appeared at the close of March, Iihs con tinued with little variation since that time, and the sales in four weeks amount in all to 251,760 bales, in cluding 152.730 American. Of these the trade have taken 156,070 hales, or an average of 30,018 per week, and with fully confirmed statements ns to the defici ency of United States cotton crop, the market has pretty steadily advanced, and prices now stand about a halfpenny perpound higher, ns compared with the close of March, in the more current qualities of Ame rican and Brazil, and three-eights of a penny in Surat, n much larger proportion than usual of the last de scription havjng lately been purchased. The total import into Great Britain up to 30th ult. was 627,709 bales, including 448, 542 bales American, against 796.114 in all, and 698.220 -American received in tbe first tour months of 1849, and the stock in Lfv- emiol, London and Glasgow, on the 1st inst was 617,- 818 bales, including 399,662 American against 695,396 and 482,639 bales, respectively held 12 month ago. It should be observed that last yenr’s stock is given ac cording to a corrected estimate accounting for part of the excess found at the close of 1849, and so does not agree with the figures given nt the time. The low estimates of the American crop which nre now generally received will probably prevent any im portant decline in cotton, but the spinners hnvtffnow purchased freely, ahd as they will probably not desire to hold large stocks, they May again, before long, keep out ot the mnrhet. There is not much disposi tion to speculate at present prices, nor would there be now afforded to speculators the facilities with re gard to money which could be procured nt a lower range of currency. it is important to remark, too, respecting Ameri can cotton, that the reduction in consumption, which lias been forced on manufacturers by the advance oil the raw material, more than proportionality affects this description, Brazil and Surat having been lirgely substituted for it The weekly average of cotton ta ken for consumption in Great Britain for the four months this year is 27,580 bales in all, against 30,480 last year, a reduction of 2,900 bales per week, but in American tbe reduction is 6000 liniea per week, while in Brazil there is an increase of 2,450, und East Indian of 500 bales per week. The Manchester market is reported as having ad vanced. but not inproportion to the rise in cotton, and exhibiting signs of greater stability, stocks being light. Hick.—The sales of Carolina in three weeks nre 750 tierces nt 18 to 19s. 9d. per cwt. nnd of E. 1.15,000 bags at from 7s. 3d. for j ellow, cargo, up to 9s. 9d. and 10s. for good white, which rates show n decline of W. per cwt. This week there hns been a better de mand, and 1,400 tierces Carolina sold nti7s. to 19s. 6d. with a few very fine nt 20s„ Shipping. Intelligence. PORT OF SAVANNAH. - . - MAY 23. POUT CALENDAR.
