Zanschencria Calif arnica.—Is. very ahowy ! plant lately found growing in the fields near Monterey. It forms a thick, bushy mass with j its numerous slender branches, and producing L brilliant effect by its multitude of gay orange, j scarlet flowers, somewhat resembling that of j the Caura. It ha* boon cultivated abroad as I n hardy greenhouse plant, and taken up And I sheltered in a cold frame, or greenhouse flStlie ] winter. If, as seems probable, this plant prove s J hardy with us, it will be n groat acquisition to [ the flower garden. It grows about three feet j high, very bushy, with perennial stems, woody at the base; natural order Onetheraceie. Fuchsia Scrratifolia.—This distinct and [beautiful Fuchsia is better worthy of second [trial here then any other, nnd, if it answer to [ the character given by Van Houtte, of “allowing amateurs of all classes to enjoy its beauty, be- i cause it grows and flowers freely in the open [ air all summer,” it will become a favorite at [oncein this country, where none of the now | Fuchsias succeeded so well, except with shelter | ia summer. It is a native of New Grenada and the countries bordering the Andes, and a cold [ frame is sufficient to protect it in winter. The [.plant is of handsome growth, the leaves b..ldly ] serrated, the flower large, with rosy callixes touched with green, a fine open corolla of an Grange color. It should for trial, in the coun- jtry, bo planted about tho middle of May, in a [situation sheltered from winds; n deep, moist, [rich border, with the surface mulshed to retain | moisture. Fuchsia Spectahalis.—The Queen of Fuch- [sias, this superb species has been called by [Dr. Lindley. The flowers are so large and [tho patels so expanded that they might at first 1 sight almost bo taken for the oleander. The [color is a rifch, lively red, heightened by the 1 pure white of the very large stigma. The fol iage is largo apd broad and a dark, velvety, J grfe'eh color. This was discovered in the An- | des'of Quito, where it grows four feet high in ; shady woods. It requires tho same treatment is other greenhouse species, and plants of it are advertised for "sale by Messrs. Parsons, lad the other leading growers. Downing's Horticulturist. Superstitions of the Higkldnders—The I Highlanders have softie Opinions and belief— that some might call superstition—that are in [ perfect accordance with the Decalogue. They I believe that acts of broelty and oppression, by individual, descends is a curse on his I children, to the third and fourth generations, i An extraordinary anecdote is related in illustration of this belief; The Into Oolonel [Campbell, of Glenlyon, retained this belief | through his whole life. Ho was grandson of Oaptr Campbell, who commanded the Military [ at tho massacre of Glencoe; Ho was an officer nf the 42d regiment, and died but a tew years age. While in the service he wits ordered to superintend the execution of a criminal, tint a 1 reprieve finally came with orders that the , preparations fob the execution should gd on j till the prisoner was brought out and placed [ beforo tho file of qoldiers who were ready to j bxeclne tho sentonce. No one was to know of the reprieve but tho officer, and orders were [ that the soldiers should firo when Colonel Campbell hold up a white handkerchief as a signal, but not sooner. The hour arrived, he put his hand in his pocket for tho reprieve, nnd wiih it he accidentally drew forth a white | handkerchief, at sight of which twenty balls pierced the body of the reprieved victim" NEW BOOKS Poetical nnd Prose -Writings of Charles Sprague—now and re. viOed edition: ‘ The Onyx Ring: by the late John Sterling—with a sketch of his life Heroinos of of prominent Eddy: Anne Boleyn, a tragedy, by Geo. H AVING received a small supply of TJA NUTS, collected at great expense of money and labor, in the middle distnets of China, from the most cele brated Tea Plantations of the Empire, I am prepared to fulfil my engagements by accommodating the pub* lie with a share of the Nuts received. It is obriously the interest of the planter to submit to an increased ex pense, to secure a superior quality oi Tea Nut, in es- tablisbing a Tea Plantation, whether large or small. In prosecuting this arduous undertaking, I am in fact acting as an agent for the benefit of the public. Neither the Stute, tho public, or any individual, has ever extended to me the aid of a single cent. States.
