New Yoke, October, 9th 1850. I am glad l06ee thnt tlle ““Uject of killing on Rail- Lads has at length been considered worthy the at tention of our city fathers, and the enquiry that is to e instituted in respect to it, cannot but result in Uod, 1 think. There is an utter recklessness of liu- i life in this community ; hundreds are yearly t away by some “accident,” as it is termed, but L one is to blame; never In my recollection has a Coroner's Jury directly implicated any one, in such «way as to lead to an indictment for man slaughter. They sometimes do condescend to pass whatjtnay be Considered implied censure; but that is all. The c terrible affair of the Southerner and the Isaac fcicad, when twenty-four persons were hurried into feternity, baa been forgotten already, and no steps |aten towards the inquiry, as to who was to blame ; ash there was blame somewhere, and even cul- liablc neglect It has been now ascertained, that many »:r ons who e,coped from the sinking vessel, were titerwarda drowned from exhaustion,in consequence If the delay in rescuing them. Some forty min utes, it seems, elapsed before the boats of the steamer fame to their rescue! It is a disgrace to the Anreri- fan character, that such occurruncies as these are o lightly passed over. A hide hit of economy is about to be practiced by l'uric Sam at this port, which may save him a lew thousands tf dollars a year. It is intended to Kill tlja leases of the premises tyred for public kafthousca; retaining only a few. In future, pri- lateindividuals are to do tho warehousing, which Ml tie quite as convenient for merchants, and the Ihimge I believe is entirely unobjectionable. We ire in quite a military furore here with target I'xcurfione, parades, and military visitors. About llOof the Boston Lancers arrived hero on Monday audit, with imrses, accoutrements, tents, “long •words,” saddles, bridles, &e., *&c., &.C. They lire a ineertof men, and look as though they might do Ionic mischief in the field. Rut 1 have not much Jnilli in these litre weather soldiers, whose great am- •ition seems to be to don the uniform, and please sew- pg maids by playing at soldiers. Tho Government organs at Vi- enim, in their intense mortification at the treatment experienced by Haynau, aro endeavoring to brave tlie matter out, and to cover the man’s infamy by stating that the reernt attack upon him will cause the high- est favors to be shown to him by the Emperor, und that he will accordingly receive, what has long been the object of his ambition, h marshal’s baton. How any transactions between llaynuu and his master can whiten the reputation or exalt the dignity of either is not expluined. Coupled with these accounts, attempts arc also be- ing made to clear him of the odium connected with the flogging of Madame de Maderspatch, but, although the actual guilt of that step is thrown upon a subor dinate officer, no pretence is made to show that this put ty was ever punished or reproved cither by Hay- uau or the Emperor. Regarding the dreadful cir cumstances connected with the murder, for it was nothing less, of Count Batthyany, the apologists of the general maintain a profound silence. Approaching Liberation of Kossuth. It will be recollected that tho period during which the Turkish Government agreed to detain KosButh and his com panions, in order to pacify the Austrian und Russian Governments, was one year. The Term expires du ring tire present month, and the Vienna Cabinet nre now endeavoring to procure its extension by setting up the quibble that the time was to he computed from tlie (lute of his transportation to Aeiu. Uomnntlu Knot. •Underthis head, the New Orleuus Picayune, r elutes the following interesting und singular history : In tjie winter of 1840, a lady who had lately been deprived by deuth of u duughter, was on a visit to New Orleans. Amongst other places of curiosity und interest, she was induced by feelings of the ten- derest compassion, to look in the room appropriated to the reception of those destitute children, to be ex- nmiiK'd as to their fitness ior tho charity of the Or phan Asylum. Immediately on h“r entering ttie room, u little girl of about the same age us her own lust child sprang into her urms, culled her mother, und by emfeuring caresses, evinced her joy nt being restored, us she believed, to her lost parent. On inquiry, the following facta were elicited relative to her previous history : A few hours after the dreadful tornado, a etonm- bout lauded at Natchez, when a servant girl brought u little girl on burud, stating that she hud walked out with the child just before the storm commenced, and on tier return she found the house of its parents com pletely demolished—sire laid been looking for her mistress in every direction, and hail almost arrived at tlie painful conviction tliut she was buried beueutR the ruins. The chambermaid of the boat offered to take charge of tire child, whilst the girl returned to make a further search; and during her absence the bout Btarte,d lor New Orleuus—the child remaining on board. On the return trip every inquiry was made at Nat chez for the fumily or servant, but nothing could be lienrd of them. The child continued on the boat, un der the ctlurgc of the chumberumid. until tlie captain objected to her remaining on board. Then she was placed at an infant schoui in New Orleans, the chain- bermuid visiting her and defraying her expenses on each arrival of the boat, until the- yellow fever de- priced the little outcust ot her last friend, tlie good chumbermuid. The woman who kept the infant school then turned the cnild into the street, from whence shu was taken to tlie room where sue had the happiness of finding u second mother. Tho lady whom she believed to be her mother determined to udopt her, anil since then she has been treated in ull respects as one of tlie family. So careful of her happiness has this truly churitublu lady been, thnt though t c little child is now a tine intelligent girl, ot between 12 or 13 years of age, und associated with tho lady’s own children, both older mid younger than herself, she lias not the faintest suspicion of her real position. She was at the time of her being adopted about two years old, a very beautiful and intelligent child, with uncommonly lair complexion, brown hair, bluo eyes, with long blui k eyelashes. Shodiad forgotten her own name und that of her parents, but truin her knowing the names and uses ot various articles ot luxury, und speaking of her father’s carriage; and from her entire freedom from any vulgurism in man- tier or thought, it is presumed that her family were respoctuble. If any reliance could be placed on the conversation of so young u child, it might be suppos oil thnt her parents were foreigners—perhaps Scot tish, perhaps Catholics. It was supposed that her own parents were dead, but from facts lately elicited such is probably not the ease; and it is ior the purpose ot gaining information that the little that is known of her history 4s made public. Any one knowing any thing likely to lead to a discovery of tire orphan's relations is requested to address box 328, Mobile, Ala. Anil as giving publicity to this notice may bp tho mcutis of restoring u child to a bereaved mother, the writer hopes tliut editors throughout tlie Union will give it a placo in their columns, especially in the Natchez und Philadelphia papers. The examination of tho fugitive slave took place to-day. Scott’s Guards, Gray's Guard, aud the United States troops accompanied the prisoner from tlie jail to the court room, with loaded muskets. No ulteinpts nt rescue were made by the negroes, and others, who hid collected nbout tlie jail in hundreds. Some stores and brickbats were thrown at the marshal's carriage. Tho negro was Bent to jail for a week, to await for evidenco, when tho crowd dispersed. li’Jp’ Mb. Paine, tho gas man hie turned ub again with another new and wouderful discovery. He says in tlie Scientific American; I have succeeded in making certain bodies repellent orrepulsive to water, when immersed in it. For in stance—the whole surface of a vessel’s bottom and sides ("of a peculiar form) from the sterripust to the broadest cross section hns by n peculiar electrical state a repulsive action upon the-fluid which buoys it u p und consequently the vessel has an onward motion so long aB ttris electric action continues. This elcc- tricul action is furnished and continued by magneto- electricity, and if the vessel’s course is a circle her motion will be perpetual. Mr. Paine hopes the scientific world will not believe this announcement nnd predicts that theory of humbug will pe raised. No d^ubt of it Special Notices.
