New York, Oct. 11. it seems that tho church is still to bo without n KllMi,l“ this diocese,, at least; for the House r ( . uiehops assembled at Cincinnati, has adjourn, id without doing more than discuss the case of Lbop ouderdonk. Talking of church matters, re- tiiuds me that a coalition has taken place between the o fashionable congregations of the Mediator and IColwav. mid Dr. Hawks is to be the Pastor. The min the last named, where they are to worship, sresekt at auction yesterday, and brought largo breiniums. As much as 81160 were paid for a pew $300, $300 and $600, and even more were paid as Premiums. You may judge from this that Dr. Ilawks is a popular preacher j and so he is—his dis fcuurscs arc very eloquent—he has a rich musical. Lice, and reads churmiDgly. The Turk, Amin Bey, was at tho Fair of tho A- incrican destitute, a day or two since, and looked much surprised at the show. I bavo no doubt that e considered us a sort of semi-barbarians before he Arrived.' Itis a remarkable fact, how llttlo aequain. pcople in Europe are with tho character of Rmcrica and American s, and how astonished, cock" Lys particularly, are on landing at Now York, to ■ml so great similarity to home. [The Democrats nro in high feathers to-day, at the ro- lult ofthe Pennsylvania election, which by the bye look! hud for the Whigs here. When wo remember, (uwevor, that the present President and Cabinet are Becidedly Protective Tariff men, this result is ren- Jcrol tho more strange i and shows that there is Tometiling rotten somewhere. What, with this be- dhccJcctors here, and the split between the un load anil the sectional whigs,ns they are termed,we, lay look for curious ofl'ects, at the next election; and ■crliapi aa both parties proper are divided, tho obo- Eti.uihU may walk in and succeed. I Mr. Secretary Corwin lias been sick, but was suf. Icieutly recovered yesterday, to accompany the i ol- Ictor down the harbor and examine some Govern- (lent property; a whole posso of Custom House Bicials went with him, and of courso Tom Corwin (ashonored with the extremo of politeness; or at ist it he was not, tho Secretary of tho Treasury “Evasion” of Halifax iiv the CtiNAnn Steamers. It acorns that the Caundiuns do not over much relish tho Admiralty ordors, directing that the Canard steamers run direct from Liverpool to New York, without stopping at Halifax, ns.has hither to been thc|*caso- Some of tho newspapers pro nounce it a slight, that tho homo Govui’timcnt will rue, one of those days, wliilo others unhesitatingly expross the belief, in a way that amounts to a threat almost, that it requires but a few more “insults," of this kind, to rouse up the Colonists to a proper asser tion of their rights. Tho Halifax people think that tho Messrs. Collins may be persuaded to permit their steamers to stop at their port, and thus enable the Colonists to declare their independence of British steamers at least, if not of British Government. The great superiority of tho American lino of steam ers'over their English competitors in point of speed, we thus see, is beginning to have an effect, which lias not generally been anticipated wo presume. Their- rupid passages have compelled the Cuuard lino to 'evade" Halifax, and tile evasion of Halifax, in turn, may lead to the evasion of that dutiful obedience to tho Home Government, which every loyal subject is supposed to owe to his sovereign. It may be of one those email matters from which flow great effects. More Nonintercoubse. Tho Medical students of Columbia, 8. C., to the number of fifteen have re solved "not to attend Medical Lectures in any North ern iustitutiou.” Nearly two thirdajof tito tobacco crop is re- ported to lisve been cut ofl lu Tennessee, by heavy frosts, on Wednesday and Thursday nights. 5'sP Experiments arejprosecuted at the l’aria Ob servatory, of taking impressions of celestial bodies by means of the Daguerreotype. Mr Miiynl), n l'ensylvunla gentleman In London, was the first to institute tho exjicrlincnt alluded to above. His experiment dutoa more than threo years hack. Special Polices. Tho flourishing and pleasant little village of Plaque mines, in the parish of Ibervlllo, La., has experi enced great disaster, in tho caving of the bank of tho river in front of the town, which took place on the night of the 8th inst. A letter to tho N.O. Delta says the bnnk at the lower part of the town caved in, up to the very doors of^thc buildings on Front street, for a space of a hundred yards or more ; and, from ap pearances, the work of destruction has barely com menced. Tho lots and buildings on Front street, that may bo already set down ns destroyed, extend from the Louisiana Cott'uc-house to the store and ho tel of Lacostc, at the other end ofthe square. Plaque mines is an important town, on account of its be ing tho chief depot of tho flourishing county of the Attnkapns. Advance in the Price of Cigars. Tho Charles ton Sun learns from private letters received In thnt city per steamship Isabel, that the prico of cigars In Hnvana have advanced very considerably, in con sequence of tho great demand for .the California trade. Each steamship for Chugres taking not Ices than from five to seven hundred thousand. J3P Never neglect to read tho advertising depart ment of a newspaper, if you would know where to Iny out your money to the best advantage. Compe tition is at its height, and those who bavo anything worth buying nt good bargains ulwnys advertise. They know it is u sure wny to do a brisk and profita ble business ; and by selling quickly they are enabled to sell cheaply. Keep the run of the advertisements. Sometimes the price of a whole year’s subscription is bavoU by looking closely over the advertisements. Ameuican BinLE Society. Franklin. Mr. Spnrks has written a letter in con tradiction of the charges which bavo been brought against Franklin, of having been fluttered und cajol ed into subserviency to French interests while he re presented his country at tho Court of Franco. Mr. Spnrks says that he has exumiued into the subject with great cure, and ho adds that the imputation “ is not sustained by a single paragraph or fact in all this voluminous mass of papers, although bo often ap pears ns a prominent actor in our complicated for eign relations. On the contrary, be is everywhere presented in tho character of n true and steady patri ot ; wise and consistent, sagacious und firm, bold and persevering, and not a whit behind tho most ardent of his compatriots in asserting his country’s liber- Dr. Neandcr anil the Pantaloon Story. A corres pondent ot the Litorury World gives the following: Dr. Neunder never paid the slightest attention to pe sonal comfort or household uflairs. Ilia sister, who toldine the story herself, provided for every thing. .Among other things, she placed the articles he was to wear every day before hid bed. Dr. Nean dcr had never been known to havo ordered any clothes: but one day the tailor met him and said : * ‘Doctor, 1 think you ought to have a new pair of pantaloons.” “Very well,” replied the great man, olid in due time tho breeches made their appearance. They were pluccd, however, without the knowledge of tlie sister, before bis bed, and ill the morning they served to encase the Doctor's legs. He went to the university building to lecture, and when his sister entered tho room and found there the old pantaloons, she did indeed believe that lie had forgotten to put on any, and was, as might wel) be supposed, in despair. Site went ut once in a carnage to receive him the moment he should come out.— Her anxiety during thetimewas extreme, and e- qually great wus her joy nnd gratitude wlieg she saw her brother, on whom slio doated, leavinu tho large portal of that beautiful building, with breeches on like any other Christian. She herself had the heartiest laugh at her own anxiety, und told every one of it. Tho story was improved by mak ing it u degree worse , arid thus lias travelled all over the European continent, passed to anotherhein- ispbere, and to u certainty will find its way into in- diaa id Auitriili in p ipers, und ultimately into the fout-notes of some biography of that distinguished ornament of our times.
