BY TELEGRAPH. Transmitted for the Daily Morning Neve. NEW YORK COTTON MARKET. New York, Oct. 16, 8 55 P. M. We have had a qulot market to-day. No change in pricea. .‘■alee300bales. The accounts by tho Kuropa, repreernt the Havre market aa quiot. India Cotton market had udvanccd .10 to 40 per cent. N ew Schooner. The new achooner D. H. Raid- teln, Capt. Parker, arrived yesterday from Balti more, In five days. She ia a very handsome cralt, end bears the name of one of our citizens. Harper* New Monthly Magazine. We have received from tho publishers, the New Monthly, for October. Tills admirable eclectic may justly to) said to stand at the head ol tho list of Amer lean Magazines. In many respects, it has no supe! rior In Europe. The manner in which it ia gotten up, being printed on handsome clear type, and on the very best quality of fiaper, ia n-uch in its favor, while its selections are dictated by sound discretion, and cultivated taste. Tho best of tho essays, novels, tales, sketches, poems, iiu., from all the American, and English periodicals are given, with the literary and miscellaneous nows of tho month briefly but well told. It also gives the fashions for the seasons with handsome engraved illustrations. No Mngazine ever issued in this country has obtained such uni versal popularity in so brief a time, its circulation linving ulrendy gone to kortv-tiiousanv copies — Subscription price, $3—Single copies 25 cents. Mr. John M. Cooper, is agent for tho work in this city Too Dear for the Whl*tle. We see by a paragraph in the Georgian of yester day morning, that Mr. Barnum proposes to trent us to a concert by Jenny Lind, provided our citizens wiilsccure him $12,000 or $15,000, and that subscrip tion papers are left at tho Heading Rooms of tho Georgian and Republican offices, for the signatures of those who deslro to subscribe to this fund. For our own part wu think tho demand exorbitant, and that it should not be acceded to by our citizens. Tho lowest Ilguro U a very largo sum for a poptila. tlon like ours to pay for amusements during an entire season, and wo doubt not, that tho Binount might bo expended in a way to give much more general satis faction and enjoyment to our people. Fifteen Thou sand Dollars, for Savannah, is as much in propor tion to our population as half a million would be to tlio population of New York, and as the money would be taken away from among us, except i#iat would pay fur advertising and hotel accommodations for a duy or two, wo think that wo would bo acting very unwisely to go into any such an arrangement A large portion of our population have alroady heard Jennv Lind, and Imvo puid pretty dearly for the opportunity. They were much pleased witli her singing, but.we know some of them who, since the novelty is over, would not be willing again to pny ton prices to hear her. Wo can soo no good reason why Mr. Barnum should demand $12,000 or $15,(XX) for n visit to Savannnh. When Jennv Lind visits New Oilcans, as sho doubtlessly will, it will bo in her way to pass through Savannah and Charles ton cither going or returning, and in consideration that the South has already bled pretty freely, we think a much less sum than even, 12,000 should he considered sufficient by Mr. Barnum to indemnify him for a concert or two in Savnnimh. Woare among tho mostardcut admirers of Jennv Lind's character, and if half bo true thnt is written in her praise ns an artist, sl(o certainly oxcclls any' other vocalist that has over visited this country. Moreover wo are an admirer of Barnum. Wo con sider him the Barnum of tho world j and we hope he may realise what his enterprise and tact ao well merit—a princely fortune from his Jennv Lind en gagement. But us Aminednb Slocum suys, there is such a thing ns "culling it n leetle to darn'd fat." We think our friend Barnum's idqns, are n little too elevated tor our latitude. Tre Atlanta Republican. Wo have received tho firal number of a new paper with the above name, published at Atlanta in this State, edited by Mr. Jesse Rnnkau. Tho editor is a stranger to us. The tone of this paper is indicated by the' following wlthMexico ' modest sentence from nn article against tho “bloody fire-eaters, and iHsunionists." Tho editor says C3P ia stated that Mr. C. D. Stuart, late editor “. Your Georgia legislature had lust about ns moot. four Georgia legislature had just about as much business with tho matter os thchnnds nta corn-shuck ing, and their acts are entitled to less than half ns much rctpecl." Din’tho open rich. Tho majority of tho last legislature will feel very bod niter reading ' the Atlanta Republican. The.Nnw Winter Dances,—The New York Day Booh, which is authority In such mntters, N. P. Wil lis to the contrary notwithstanding, says:—Tlio Pol ka will doubtless hold tho ground- or rather tho enr- pet—during the present winter, and wo have hear aoma vary brilliant and effective novelties in this way, which sra to bo introduced Into the most fnshiona- ble drawing-rooms, to find thoir way gradually down Ward to tlio little ambitious parlors of East End nnd ♦lie Bowery, lohg after they havo been forgotten In the brilliant scent* of their first triumph. Tho Polka, notwithstanding its popularity is pot and never can be a graceful or even a lovablo dance. Ills the natural language of a condition ofllfe far too rude, disjointed nnd uncouth for tho resorts of refine ment, cloganco and aristocracy. It has only been temporarily accepted on account of its novelty and is to be classed with those monstrous whims which fashionable Indies sometimes encourage and indulge, simply to show that they may do as bizarre a thing as they like. But they soldo m continuo long In favor —indeed tho Tolka is already unusually long-lived for a fashionablo caprice. Wo have known a boor to run a month and a wild Indian to even out-luet the season—but the new return of tho Polka is little less puzzling to us than that of Monsieur Tonson to tho exasperated Frenchman, The next popular dance will bo a movement slow and graceful, gilding, tender and expressive—the vary opposite of tho jork-me-all-to-pieccs Polka, nnd probably partaking of tho Minuet, charmlngest nnd most bewildering of dances ! Tho Schotttschc has already partially realized this requirement but it is top simple and monotonous to hold the carpet long. Itmay bo considered, however, we hope, the com mencement of a thorough reform, such as we haVo mentioned. Atall events, wo expect to see the Polka this winter make its lost kick. Cheap Living in Philadelphia.—Fitzgerald of the City Item ssys- -A cheap boarding bouse has been opened down town. In tho morning they have boiled potatoes for breakfast, which are sliced up and fried for dinner, and served up cold for supper. Board is only Bevcn shillings per week, including lodging, for single gentlemen—threo in a bed- Like Mastrr like Man.—One of tho Washing- ton correspondents of tlio Tribune, in giving a bird's eye glanco at the Senate, in alluding to the great South Carolinian, says: “Calhoun had a strong per. aonnl resemblance to tho devil.” This ts almost ns forcible ns Mr. Greelv's “you lie, vllllnn," when addressing a few editorial words to Mr. Bryant. Singular Monomania. As a respectable, well dressed lady, was walking In tho fashionable street of Detroit a few days slnco, a man with thcnppenrance Of a gentloman, grasped her by tho legs, and threw her down. Ilethen took off the left shoo, but seemed to change his mind, and then took the right one, and mndo off with it, doing no other harm. The shoes were new, the lady wearing tbom for the first time- The man Is a printer we believe, and if wo recollect rightly was arrested and tried for the same caper in Brooklyn, New York, about two years ago. When arrested, his room wss found to contain a great number of lady'b' shoes, which ho had tuken from their l'ect in the manuor above described. The Election in Mexico. An intolligcntgcntle- man residing in Brownsville writes to tho New Or leans Delta, us follows, concerning the Mexican elec tion : " Tho election appears to ho hotly contested be tween Arista slid Almonte. 'Pile election of either is sure to bring about a revolution. If Almonte, or either of the otiicr candidates is elected, Arista will proclaim the independence of the Republic of the Sierra Mudrc. If Aristu is elected his opponents will pronounce against him, under the pretext that he lias made a free use of gold nnd force to procure his elec tion.,’ £5^’ The Fort Smith Herald snys that Dr. William Butler, Cherokee Agent, died near Fort Gibson, on the 24th ultimo. I)r. 11. was a brother of Col. P. M. Butler, former Cherokee Agent, who fell in tho war of the New York Sun, ia about to stnrta new daily penny paper in thnt city, to bo devoted to Henry Clay lor the Presidency. Applications run Bounty Land. Tho National Intelligencer states (by request) that applications for Bounty Land, under tho recent act of Congress, or any other act, as well as all inquiries relative to such claims, or to persons supposed to be entitled to laud, should be addressed to the .Secretary of the Interior, or tho Commissioner of Pensions, and notto tho Sec retary of War.
