led by the fugitive slave lnw in particular.

referred the bill to the attorney general for his

. Correspondence of the Daily Morning Neic.
NEW-YORK, OCT. lfltli, 1850.
Tho mania for starting newspapers lias not been
ragingqpich of late; tho speculation proved so dis
astrous to tho speculators, that lor some time past
others have been quito source, nnd therefore, it was
a novel cry of the boys yesterday : “ 'Eres the New-
Yorker, only one cent.” This is a new independent
penny daily, edited by Mr. C. D. Stuart, a poet und
prose writer, whilom connected with the Sun. Ilis
pnrtncr, Webster, wusnUo employed in the office of
the snme paper. Stuart, I believe, married some
money, but not enough to embark in such an enter
prise.—I understand there are backers in the hack
ground. I fear that it will be a losing speculation,
unless indeed, tlie parties are willing to sink from
Si0,IKK) to #11.000, alter which it might be establish
ed. Of all precarious enterprises, starting a daily
newspaper is the most uncertain. Two others were
started on the snme day, the Standard, by the vener-
ahlwCul. Mumford, (Democratic,) nnd a penny Pica
yune, of which nothing has been heard since.
I wub present at a private exhibition oi Tripler
Hall, on Monday night, when it was lighted up for
the first time, nnd n more dezzlingly beautiful place,
I have never witnessed. The area is inimonse, and
when filled with scats, the place will seat, I hear,
nearly five thousand; for there are two tiers of boxes,
very deep, besides tlie seats under them, on the
ground floor. Over the centre of the stage, is a life
like portrait oi Jenny Lind, and the walL are covered
with fresco paintings, all of tlie most appropriate
character, and remarkable for their chastity and ele
gance. It is to be used as a ball, as well as a concert
room, and the Fire Department have, I hear, already
secured it for their next annual terpsichorenn as
semblage. You may judge of the brilliancy of the
place, when I state that there are nearly a thousand
jets of gas in the interior. There is as Jet, on unex-
plained difficulty as to tlie riglJtil possessor of the
llall for the opening night, nnd Wscord reigns where
all should he harmony. Boclisa exhibits papers
giving him tlie lease, and Barnum produces equally
legal documents, securing the Hall to him, so that
probably Tripler lias made a trip in the business, and
between the turn may come to the ground. Bishop
is announced for to morrow night, however, nnd
lias expended, it is said, over §2,009 in preparations
for her three mammoth musical entertainments.
To-morrow the anti-Seward Whig Convention
meets at Utica, and great anxiety is felt ns to tlie
proceedings there, as upon them, in a great measure,
depend the success of the party at the next election.
It seems strange that such a party should split upon
one man, or that he should have power to produce
such a result.
The pier, where the late accident occurred, is a
queer looking plnce, and it is wonderful, in viewing it,
how any escaped. Operations have been commenced!
nnd about five tons of the Iron were brought to light
yesterday, from the mud. All the material will be
recovered, it is supposed. No bodies have been
found, nnd it is not probable that any will he. An
ordinance is to be passed forthwith, by the Common
Council, inflicting a penalty for the negligence, or
carelessness in such matters for the futuro.
The arrival of tho Florida yesterday, took us some
what by surprise, and speaks well for her qualities.
I wonder Government does not send the Mail by these
vessels, for they beut the Railroads out r.nd out, or
at least, the letter hags are not subject to so many
contingencies as by the land route: from lazy or dis
honest, or neglectful pot waiters and clerks.
From the business done in the New York State
Canals this season, things look prosperous, nnd seem
to hoar out the statement, that the Fall season lias
been greater than usual. The amount received in
the first week in October was §126,410; being an in
crease over the same period last year of§6,273. From
the commencement of navigatian to the 7th inst., the
amount received was §2,288,600.
The stock market is remarkably brisk at present,
and a good many arc realizing large profits. Even
small jobbers clear §100, $150 and §200 a day, by the
advance of cotton stock ; and if they have the gump
tion to sell out at the right time, may consider them-
selves very lucky, hut it is u species of gambling,
nnd engenders that dissatisfied spirit, that always
craves lor more, the more it receives ; nnd deceived
by hope, risk after risk is ventured, until all is gone,
and then the misguided victim curses his luck, iu-
stead of his folly.
A curious instance of the effect of the Fugitive
Slave Bill was exhibited here yesterday. A colored
man was driving his cart through the street, and was
hailed by a police man, who was conducting a drunk,
en man to tlie Station House, to back up, and place
him iu hia cart. The poor fellow, being probably
a fugitive slave, mistook the summons, no doubt, for
one to surrender, und jumping from his cart etarted
off. and lias not been hoard of eiuce. The cart was
taken care of, but lias not been claimed; he may
own it.
Tlie Fire Department, or a po rtion of it, lias nom
inated the Chief Engineer, Carson, for Muyor—he is
a whig, hut will not be acceptable by the party; if he
were, his nuccess would he miduubtcd ; indeed he
may succeed as it is. He is an uneducated man, buy
ing ieit the blacksmith's anvil to accept his present
office. He would make a stir in the Mayor’s office,
or I am much mistaken—tho only objection is, that
he might fall into the hands of designingan unprinci
pled advisers.
The lunatic, who killed the colored man in Leon
ard street, on 8unday night, is still in custody ; tho
subject will go before the Grand Jury, who will decide
tlie question of lunacy. The wounded persons are
recovering.
Dunlap’s great picture, “Death on the Pule Horse,’’
was solo at uuction,to-day,by Mossrs.Cooley & Keese.
The Bale drew together a large number of artists,
connois-ura, and others. Tlie purchase! was Rev.
Mr. Gonzalves, of titonington, Ct., who paid §2,500
for it. That was the first uid, and the last hid.
A full length portrait of Bishop Hughes was sold at
the same time for §180.
It was expected that the trial of Drury, Sr., would
come on iu Brooklyn yesterday, und tho witnesses
were all in attendance, but % some hocus pocus, it
was again put off until Monday next. Oh I the power
of the Almighty dollar.

Mb. James and the Whig Review. The last
number of the Americun Whig Review has an attack
upon Mr. G P. It. James, the novelist, it seems
that many years ago, when there was talk oi a war
between the United States nnd England, Mr. James
wrote some doggerel, iu which he mude several cut
ting allusions to our slave holding and repudiation
propensities. Tho verses were wrttten for the enter
tainment ol'friends, Bfter n lively dinner party, und
were not intended for the public eye. Some inju
dicious person, however, hud them printed in the
Dublin University Magazine, mi l they are now made
the occasion, by the Whig Review, of a mostiudeceu
assault. The New York Courier, Whig, denounces
tlie attack as inhospitable and unjustifiable, especially
as Mr. James lias just declured his intention of bccom
iug a U. S. citizen.
The. Mcrchantsand the Union.—ThqNew-Yurk mer
chants, whoso pockets lire threatened by the organi
zations now being lor ed at the Bduth, binding the
planters not to trade with a city represented in thr Sen
ate by an abolitionist, are bogining to water up to the
dangers if disunion. They can discern, tWough the
keen commercial sngucity tor which they are so re
markable as a clans, that an anti-intercourse league at
tho South, and a determination to stop the machinery
of government at Washington, is nothing less than a
practical dissolution ot the Union. Such a consum
mation would instantly convert our “princes’’ into
beggars, and New-York stocks, New-York real estate,
and New-York merchants would instantly lull -dike
Lucifer from Heaven.”
We have abundant evidence that our commercial
men are begining to foresee that this will ho the in
evitable,” condition of thing," if Scwardntid liisabo-
ition millions arc not speedily checked iu their mad
career.—New-York Mirror, Oct. 12 "
Model Artists.—Dr. Collyer was exhibiting his
“ model living artists" in Sail Francisco at the latest
dates. The exhibition is desceibed as "interesting,
chaste, strictly proper," &c.
Death from. Hydrophobia—Mr. Joseph Hunt, one of
tho oldest residents und most reepectublc citizens of
the county, was seized witli symptoms of hydropho
bia, on Tuosdny of last week, and, after suffering
much pain mid anguish, died on Friday evening fol
lowing. He was a man of robust constitution, about
seventy yeurs of age. He was unable to eat or drink
or to tuke medicine, and he himself said he should
die hungry nnd dry. In order to relieve ilis suffer
ings, chloroform was administered by inhaiution,
which afforded him temporary repose. At about 7
o'clock on Friday evening lie died without a strug.
gle. 'Flie wound was inflicted upon the wrist of
the right arm, and although apparently not much
more than a scratch the blood flowed freely. After
a day or two the wrist was tied up by an intimate
female friend, the only person to whom he com
municated the bite, nnd it quickly healed up.—
