From the Newark Advertiser.
The Captain’s Klyino Machine.—Thousands of
people from New-York and other parts unknown, as
sembled at Jersey City yesterday atfernoon to see the
ascent of Captain Taggart witli his Flying Machine.—
He hud advertised to fly over the city in various di
rections, demonstrating thut ho could navigate the
air as well us others can, the water. Three o’clock
was the hour appointed for the ascension, and for two
long hours the multitude gazed upon a large balloon
swuying in tile air, and apparently anxious to make
an excursion into the heavens. At four o’clock the
car was brought out, a slight frame work with a
crank being uttnehed, which was to bo worked by the
Captuin, to turn the wings, snd a tail of cotton cloth
was to be guided as u rudder to steer the vessel
through the liquid fields of space.
The gallant master of this bark then took his seat
in the midst of loud cheers from the thousands of
eager spectators; the rope that bound the car to the
earth was sundered, “the last link was broken," and
away went the balloon, tile wings, the car, the man,
the Hying machine und all 1 But alas, for all subluna
ry hopes. As oltcu with those who are expecting
to soar to the skies onwings of light and life, so it hap
pened to the ill starred navigator. Long before he
reached the lolty height from which Icariusfell, (his
waxen pinions melting) our modern hero was doom
ed to a most snd and melancholy disaster. Tho star
ting point was a gore of land, between which and the
shore is the Morris Canal; und tho balloon, niter ris
ing a few feet came down into the miserable ditch,
submerging the car and tho Ciptain, while the bal
loon rested against the trees on thu edge of the
Tbatchet Cottage garden.
A boat was soon at hand, and halfa dozen men
woro soon on the car, and alter the balloon was dis
engaged from the trees it gave uncauivocal signs of
going up. The passengers, alarmed at the prospect
of an ascension leforethey were ready, tumbled
lielter skelter out of the cur on tlie banks of tho canal,
and tho load being thus removed, away went the bal
loon with the car, a winged horse without a rider,
and is now on a voyage somewhere among the stars.
Up to this hour of writing no intelligence has been
received of its whereabouts.
The spectators laughed in derison, nnd apparently
quite well satisfied with the sport of the afternoon,
retired. When the Captain ascends again they will
all be on hand to see.
