The Sad Voyagers’* Soliloquy.
My native shore, now fast receding,
far in tlio distance faintly seen,
Farewell to thee—my bark is speeding
Over the ocean’s trackless green.
With dice are those I love and cherish—
I leave them for a while to roam,
Yet but with life shall memory perish,
Or cease to doat on friends and home.
To leave them this broad aea to traverse,
Is not a chosen pleasure—true,
llut fain the mourning heart would havo us
Obscure the past with scenes more now.
And ns lone night now draws her curtain,
And all of home gone from my view,
It eoemeth drear, methinks uncertain,
This foum-elad waste still to pursue;
And yet. though dark and wild, the ocean
With rage its Durden madly toss,
The heartwith adverse fortune’s portion
lias f or itself no fear ot loss.
No; should, with wrath, these mqpntaln billows
My sea-home lush—their foam-topped crest
Dance o'er my form, ere nature pillows
lier hurricane mnd storms to rest,
Tirere well—since life is full of gurges—
My memory doomed to lasting grief,
From thoughts ot cruel gulf like surges,
Dashing high hopes on fatal reef.
And though in other climes I wander,
Seeking for scenes to cheer the mind,
The gloomy past 1 still must ponder,
And that will darken all 1 find.

There is a rumor that Mrs. Forrest intends appear-.

for the public sympathy is decidedly on her side.

The Mormons.—This most remarkable people, un_
der their prophet Strang, have made vast improve,
ments on Beaver Island, in Lake Michigan. They
number ubout six hundred, and each man holds 40
to 160 acres of land as an everlasting inheritance.
Beaver Islands have the best inland fishery in the Un
ion, and the best natural harbor on the lakes. They
havo two sail vessels of tbeir own, and are building a
wharf for passing steamers to stop ot. Garden Is
land, six miles square, is one of the richest aud most
beautiful islands on the face of the earth. The Big
Beuver is six by fourteen miles in exteDf. Several
beautiful, well timbered islands surround the Big Bea"
ver; each ubout six miles square. Wo see, however
that dissensions have broken out among them. A,
correspondent of the Cleveland, (Ohio) Plaindealer
says:—
‘Elder Adams, who is a Mormon preacher and Tra
gedian by turns, had to flee for his life, in conse
quence ofhuving provoked tile wrath of James E.
Strang, one of the prophets, who, it seems, seta up his
will as the supremo law. Strang is charged with rob
bing the Gentiles, ns he calls all who do nut acknowl
edge his law, of provisions and such other goods and
chattels as the Siuuta require. Adams promises to ex
pose the wicked practice ol Strungnnd liis followers
Strang lias been arrested, taken to Mackinac, where
he was tried and sentenced to six months’ imprison
ment in the county jail ”
Late from Haiti.—Commencement of Hostilities
—Jeremie, (Hayti,) Oct. 11th, 1850.—Intelligence

vanguard of Solouque’s army was descending the Fobs
of Ilonicii, they were attacked by about 590 Domini
can troops, wiio drove buck tile IJnytiens with terri
ble slaughter. Already a Haytien brig ot war, with
200 men on board, has been captured off Scot’s Bay
by two Dominican schooners of war, or gun boats,
and carried as a trophy into Macao Roadstead.—N. Y.
