THE MORNING NEWS. Road—Wo understand that this improvement is moving on finely Dr. Rumsey, the faithful and able agent of the .State, has purchased the rails for the whole road, from the Georgia road to Blair's Ferry, on the Tennessee river, about 30 miles below Knox ville. A small portion of tile road between Blair's Ferry and Knoxville is graded—say some four or five miles, and there i« a deficiency of stock to grnde the balance. The officers of the road ure manfully at work to raise the sum necessary to grade the entire route, as we learn from the publications on the su b- ject in the East Tennessee pupers. This is putting the shoulders to the wheel in the right way. Those who deserves success will succeed, and BUch is the case with our East Tennessee friends. Dr. Ramsey succeeded in negotiating the bonds of the State for payment for the rails nt 8103 per $100 —the best sale ever mane of the bonds of Tennessee. We loom that the company intends applying to Congress for a remission of the tariti duties on their rails, which, if granted, will save to the company some seventy-five or one hundred thousand dollars. This would be a great relief to the work, "and would insure its immediate completion to Knoxville. We understand thntthe estimate of the grading of the East Tennessee and Virgina road, as made by their engineei, is about nine hundred thousand dol lars, of which sum subscriptions to the amount of six hundred thousand dollars huve been already obtain ed. We also understand that sixty miles of the rail road from Lynchburg, Va., to the Tennessee line, have been graded; that eighty miles more will soon be put under coutract; and that there arc now up wards of three thousand hands engaged oh this great work. The completion of Nashville and Chattanooga road on portions of which upwards of a hundred hands are now engaged in laying down rails, will soon bring Nashville within a three days’ ride of the eas tern cities.—Nashville American Correspondence of the Daily Morning News NEW-YORK, NOV. G, 1850. Tie struggle is over, but the number of the slain ui the names of all the victors have not yet been utertiined, so far as the city is concerned, however, tie Whigs have entirely routed their opponents ; isviog elected their Mayor, and all the city officers, DbUined»large majority in the Board of Assistants, carried the only two Aldermen that were to be clect- i, gained one in the Assembly, and electing nearly IItheir Congressman. Burke of the Express, and hjmond of the Courier have beeu successful, the inner to Congress, the latter to the Assembly ; Dins of the Tribune, Mike Walsh, and the infamous Ispt. Rynders have been beaten, to the great credit f the Democracy. Kingsland, the Mayor elect, is a lerchantof good standing—a dealer in Oil and Can' lei—a conservative—a man of business, and a gen- emsn, Sic., decided anti-Sewardite; in fact in look- 15 over the list of successful candidates. I find few, any, who sustain Seward and Ilia agitative doc- nrs; he and his friends Greeley, and Weed of the Ibany Journal, are no where. How the stock has ine! is not known—I may hear further before clos ing niy letter. We have two weeks lnt"r news from California to- ay hy the Empire City-, but it is not important hebriogsaliout a million dollars in geld dust, and here is more coming. The fire at San Francisco vu very distressing; there were about 125 buildings destroyed and the loss is roughly estimated at from 8250.0UU to a million of dollars. The census returns of the city come in very slowly, ilhe 14th ward there are 25,366 inhabitants, 4,822 wilies, 1,(190 dwellings and 72 places of industry.— Tk: increase of population in five years has been 4, if. CHARLEMAC South Carolina .Institute.—Second Annual Exhibition.—We are gratified to learn that this use ful and putriutic Association is actively engaged in making arrangements for its anniversary week, and we may add, gala season in Charleston. The Directors have engaged the Theatre for Mon day evening the 18th inst., for the better accommoda tion of the public, to hear the address which is to be delivered by Judge Lumpkin, of Georgia, aud from the high character and distinguished position of this gentleman in our sister State, a rich treat is anticipated. The exhibition of articles will be held during the week at Military Hall. [Charleston Mercury. Kerosene Gas, of unusual brilliancy, produ ced from Asphaltum, the discovery oi Dr. Gesner, was put in use in two of our stores last evening. This light, when compaied with that produced from coal presents a striking contrast—the gas burning in the windows of the surrounding stores appearing beside the new article as the flnme of a candle, it is calculated thnt its cost is not more than one half of tho price of coal gas.
