The Whigs began the exultant too soon, I think, for after ull'itis mono than probable that Seymour, the Demo crat, i« the lucky candidate. The Whlgcandidatefor Lieutenant Governor is defeated, hut in all the branches of the city and State Government, they have a uinjuiity. A majority, however, with the Governor and Lieutenant Governor opposed to them, will not be very effectual, ns their effort* may, from peculiar circumstances, be neutralized. If Hunt • elected, it if by the skin of his teeth ; and for this he may thank his letter to Mr. Granger, iu which he evinced a slight tinge of Sewardism ; and exhibited something like a hostile feeling to the Fugitive Slave Bill. The result therefore affords pretty good proof that the people are opposed to any further agitation of the Slavery question, at least for the present. The Atlantic arrived yesterday, but her news is entirely without interest. It appears that the Afri ca beat her by two hours, which it calculating rather close, after a voyage of three thousand miles I re gret to learn that she. ran toulofa vessel some dis tance at sea, and left a Pilot boat to render the re quired assistance. They did not stop, it seems, even to enquire the name of the Vessel. This would ap pear to be a cool, if not a heartloss proceeding. A verdict of $5000 was rendered this morning in the Circuit Court, against the Williamsburg and Brooklyn, Ferry Companies, at the suit nf Jane In man (widow of the lute celebrated painter John In man,) lor injuries sustained by her son, in conse quence of the collision of two of their Ferry Boats on the 4th July, 1848, by which his leg was broken, and she was thereby pu to gr. at trouble and ex pense It was evident that there wua negligence nn the part of those on board, one of the boats, but in as much as it was difficult to discover which was to blame, the jury gave a verdict against both compa nies. Nothing more has been done about the cowhidlne ol Bennett; Mr. Graham has been held to bail in $3000, I hear, to appear at Court. Some of the country papers, I see, state that Mrs. Bennett whs with him when attacked, and. such is the impression Bennett would convey by his statement. It is not 8i>, Mrs. B. had gone in.o n store, and Mr. B. had crossed to the other aide of Brondway belore the assault took pliice' This, I know to be the case, from parties who wilnessed the occurrence. The lecture of Archbishop Hughes, on Sunday nieht, on the ‘'decline of Protestantism" is creating considerable Idiscussion, and I presume will elicit a reply. It was an able address, very lugicsl, uud very plausible, but I don’t think that a protestnnt left the edifice in the belief ot the fact no sought to establish- I regret for my own part, tbut such a discussion should have been made. The rapid growth of the city, ia very remarkable ; unless one gives the subject proper consideration, when it will become apparent, that New-York must, in the nature of things become on immense city.— Already itextends sometfour miles in a direct line from the Battery, and may be sa d to include the cities on the bank of the EenstaudNorth rivers, opposite. But the necessity of more buildings on the Upper part of the .land has bccofy- apparent, and preliminary mess ures have been token to grade ir„ previous to laying out the streets. The value of lots in that locality will now be increased at a gregt rate, and fortunes will be made by the speculators, who, years ago pur chased them at iner nominal prices. It is impossi ble to say, what change may take place in a few years; but I have no "doubt that in ten from this time, the present limits of the eity proper will be duplicated. Jenny Lind’s concert to-day,is crowded with aftiost fashionable audience. A large number of children are present, as on this occasion, they are admitted at half-price, if under ten years of Hgc. The German Riotous Tailors are on trial to-day in the Court of Sessions. It will be remembered that two or three months since they wore out on a strike, and endeavored, by force, to prevent others trora wurkimr, and a riot ensued. If convicted it will go hard with them. The trial will be very tedious, for many ofthemdouot understand a-word of the Eng lish language. The editor of the Tribw. line sym pathized with them very deeply—whether or not the feeling passed off' witli the eluction remains to be shown. The season seems to have made a retrognue move ment, and taken us buck to September. Th s ia a bright, glorious dsy, and really quite warm.
