Hkverse or Fortune—The Milwnukie Adverti ser furnishes the following remarkable instance of me changes which sometimes occur in man - * life, time. Congress, at its late session, created a new of- nee in the Attorney General’s Bureau—that of “Copy- ing Clerk," with a salary of $2000, which has been S'^n by Mr. Crittenden to Ex-Chancellor Geo. M. Bibb, formerly a Senator of the U. 3. from Kentucky, and tqr a short time Secretary of the Treasury un der President Tyler. How strange are the vicisitudes of life and the vas- dilutions ol lortune. Mr. Crittenden wua a law stu- dentin the office of Judge Bibb, at a time when the latter had acquired high professional and political distinction. Judge Bibb now, having served with emiient credit in many of the highest offices of the State and nation, at an age, ifwo are not mistaken, above four score, finds himself in the humble office of clerk to his former pupil. PRENTICES THE MORNING NEWS. A Valuable Discovery.—Mr. Hugh Cooke, of London, has discovered a valuable process for dyeing a permanent black on wool and merino faibrics, which Professor Rogers ot the University pronounces tobe more durable than the black of the French cloths. If this be so, itis certainly a valuable discov ery. A Dangerous Beverage.—Water is composed of certain gases, one of them quite explosive. Tho other night when Professor Howland, in Pittsburg. wm decomposing water and causing terrific explo. dons of its component gases, a rather free liver in the audience, exclaimed as he held his hhnd to his esr, “Catch me mixing water with my brandy after this—l might be blown up, like the boiler of a iteimbont.” gF* At the Freesoil meeting held at Faneuil Hall’ >n the 6th of November, Charles Sumner, of Eos. ton, was among the speakers. As he was known to be a Commissioner, under appointment from the Uni ted States, his position, as well as his ability, excit" <1 considerable curiosity as to what he would say.— We quote, aftcN- some bitter denunciations of the Bill:— “l am one of those before whom, under the recent act of Congress, the panting fugitive may be brought for thedecision of the question whether he is a free man or slave. But while it. becomes me to speak with caution, I shall not hesitate To speak with plain- »e». I cannot forget that I am a man, although 1 ama Commissioner. [Three cheers given.] “Did the same spirit which inspired our fathers, in - spire our community now, the marshals, and every magistrate who regarded thiqlaw, ashaving an uncon stitutional obligation, would resign rather than toexe- esteit This, however, is too much to expect from sllntpresent But I will not judge them. To their own concienoes I leave them. Surely, no person ofhuman feelings and with any true sense of justice, living in a land ‘where the beila have knotted to church I’ whatover may be the apology of public sta tion, could fail to recoil from such service. For my • Mlf, let me say, that I can imagine no office, no salary, to consideration, which I would not gladly forego, rather than become in any way agent in enslaving my brotherman, [Sensation] Where for me would !* comfort and solace after such a work i [A voice— ’No Where?]”’ Here is a Commissioner who says outright he *ould not execute the Law ! But this is mere newspa. Per testimony, and of course unworthy the notice ol Joe Executive. Mr. Sumner will probably resign Tc^ and should any other recusant officer, go to the trouble of officially notifying the President of bii determination not to obey the requirements of the law, we have tho Mr. I'Tllmobr’s word for it, 'hsthe would turn him out. There is some satisfac tion in that The Tariff. d correspondent of the N. Y. Express, writing from i'aihingtou on this subject says : ’’Ism justified in snyingjthnt an nrdentattempt will he made, by the leading Whigs of the House, notwitli- standiug all other elements of discord, to bring this (the tariff) question to a succeasfnl issue at the en6U- ln ? session. The day is past for equivocation. The work shops and furnaces of Pennsylvania, and the juamilactorica of New-England, can bear up under meirdepressi'jifc no longer, but must either be lcvell- 3 08 mementoes of partisan folly, or again give out ■tie clang of the anvil and hammer, which have been wheard as music to the ear, since, six years ago, their tr ci were quenched and their doors closed upon our two workmen." Successful Resistance.—A correspondent o* the Boston Daily Journal writing from Portland, Me., taya:— “ William and Ellen Crafts, against whom writs "ereissued in your city, charging them as being fugi- “Ve slaves, took passage on the steamer Commodore, f ;“? r wharf in this city, on Saturday evening last, .'Halifax. They will take the British steamer at "Port, and leave behind them the band of the free and the home of the brave.’ " \ ,LI - Fish Revive after having Frozen ?—It «been often said that some kinds of fish would re- 8 after they had been frozon entirely through.— ,1 "‘ rr8e P°ndcnt of the Cleveland ‘-Visitor,” states Jr u ‘°t of perch were eaught in the winter, and t L™" n on the snow, where they soon froze so solid J” ™ handling them, many i ad their fins broken A ‘tcr remaining frozen several hours, they ffivt in B tub of water, and on examining them aft \ 11 n water, nuu uu cABiuimiijj mruj ,L„ they hRd been In the water a while, several of them were found ns lively and active as any fish ttiu rtb c - Br - J - U- Kirkland, in the same paper, “at in 1820 lie, and several other persons " u fut eight or ten busheie of eels, in a stream in onnecticut It wav in very cold weather, and the ('ff'th l)cen d r ‘ ven from a mill-pond by drawing li J“ c w ®ter.
