Along life's troubled sea ;
Whatever fate betides me,
This heart still clings to thee. E.

then raising bis arm as high ns he could, no brought
it down with his opeu hand, on the shoulder of his
tuvorito John, and added these words-especinlly for
this man."—llo then asked each of the witness
es whether tney understood him. Dr. Joseph Parish
explained to them what Mr. Randolph had said in re
gard to the law of Virginia, on the subject of Manu
mission—and then appealed to the dying man to
know whether he him stated it correctly “Yes,”
said lie, and gracefully waving his hand ns a token
of submission, he added—"the young gentlemen will
remain with me.”
The scone was soon changed. Having disposed
of that subject most deeply impressed upon bis
heart, his keen penetrating eye lost its expression,
his powerful mind gave way. and his fading imaginn-
tiou began to wander amid Beenes nfid with friends
that he had left behind. In two hours tho Bpirittook
its llight, and all that, was mortal of John Randolph
of Roanoke, was bushed in death. ‘ At n quarter be
fore 12 o’clock, on the 24th of June, 1833, aged sixty
years, he breathed his last in a chamber of tho City
Hotel, No. 41 North Third Street, Philadelphia.

The following is an extract from the life ol John
Randolph, of Roanoke, by Hugh A. Garland, which
| has just been published :
Next morning, (the duy on which he died) Dr.
I Pariah received an early and urgent message to visit
him. Several persons were in tho room, but soon
leflit, except his servant John, who was muen alfect-
ad at the sight of his dying master. The Doctor re
marked to him, “I hare seen your master very low
before, and he revived ; and perhaps he will again."
" John knows better than that, sir.” He then looked
I atthe Doctor with great intensity, and snid in an
earnest and distinct manner, “I confirm every dis
position in tny will, especially that respecting my
slaves, wh.m 1 have manumitted, and for whom 1
[ Imre made provision.”
" I am rejoiced to hear such n declaration from
jou, air,” replied the Doctor, and 60011 alter pro
posed to leavehim for a short time, to attend to another
I patient. “You must not go,” was the reply; “you

Id: the Doctor caD't go now.''
[ lie seemed excited, and snid, “If you do go you
Itccdnot return." The Doctor appealed to him us to
I tie propriety of such on order, inasmuch as he was
I cily desirous of discharging hie duty to another
I petient. His manner instantly changed, and he said,
|4relract thatexpression." Seme time afterwards,
I liming an expressive look, he said again, “1 retract
I that expression.”
The Doctor now said that he understood thosub-
Ijectof his communication, nnd presumed the will
I zould explain itself fully. He replied, inbis peculiar
Iviv “No, you don't understand it; I know you don't.
■Our laws are extremely particular on the subject of

The Doctor spoke with entire candor, and replied
■that it wss rather a matter of surprise that he had
■lasted so long. He now mude his preparations to die.
iHt directed John to bring him his father's breast but
|on; he then directed bim to place it iu the bosom of
ijhilbirt. It was an old-fashioned, large-sized gold
bind. John placed it in tho button-hole of his shirt
Wm—but to fix it completely, required a hole on
Ikcappusite side. “Get a knife,” said he, “and cut
pne." A napkin was called for, and placed by John
per his breast. For a short time he lay perfectly
fcniot, with his eyes closed. He suddenly roused up
and exclaimed, “Remorse I remorse I” it was thrice
fepeated, the last time at tho top of his voice, with
peatagitation. He cried out, “let me seo the word;
pet a Dictionary, let me see the word." “There is
*"m in the room, sir.” “Write it down, then, let me
e the word.”
I The Doctor picked up one of his cards, “Randolph,
[fitoanoke”—■•shall i write it on this card?” “Yea
lathing more proper.” The word remorse, was then
Trittenin pencil. He took the cardin a hurried man-
ter,and fastened his eyes on it witli great intensity.
