IUrtiaiNG to Accept Freedom.—The Memphis Eagle, of the 5th instant, states that some eighty ne groes, made free by the will ot Mr. Jones, who re cently died in that country, refused to leave the plantation, or to accept their freedom and go to III - snia, where the brother ot Mr. J. had located a tract d land lor them pursuant to the will ol the dec'd. Correspondence of the Daily Morntgn New*. NEW-YORK, NOV. 22, 1850. A sort of a semi-political meeting took place ins [ aijht, at the opening of a new hotel called the “Clar- I oaiioa,” which is situated a long way up towi, I the corner of 18th street"and 4th avenue. A short I time since this locality was quite out of town, but j the city increases so rapidity, that it is now densely [ inhabited, and tho hotel in question is furnished in a I scale of magnificence, excelling even those down [town. The occasion 1 refer to, was a meeting ot Washington Hunt, the Governor elect, with some two I or three of his Whig triends; there was oonsidera | bis of a talk about matters and things, which did t amount to much, and considerable eating and I dung which did much to promote tne talking Some I of the speakers become rather warm and personal, I when referring to the breach in which the Whig I ranks, and symptomB of a fight were at one rime I rather apparent; but' somebody poured ail upon a the troubled waters, und a disgracelul sceno m s I prevented. The Arctic (Collins Line) made her last voyage to i Lnerpuolin aboul.oleven days, and the Europam Idepime time ; so there is no boasting on that trip. I The Pacific and Atlantic, are now lying at their pier j at the foot of Canal-street, and some forty caulkers ireatwork on the latter. The fact cannot be cor.- coaled that she has had a terrible shaking, and I ieni that this rivalry as to time, will yet prove disastrous. I The immense power of atenm carri d by o m s e must try the strength of their fames to t e u | most. ■ There was quite a commotion in tho neighbor* hood of the Marine Court this morning, and thou- I lauds of persons had assembled with the idea, that I Jenny Lind was to appear in the Court as a witness. I She was subpoenaed it seems to appear yesterday, I hut did not attend, and As this was construed into I contempt, an attachment was issued, and e v°ca listwas positively arrested at the Now-Tor o t . [Thematter in controversy ia the payment tor ser- [vice as chorous singers; by two young ai > [Jenny’sConcerts; but why payment ia re ‘“® e< * . I lot aware. The case was called on this -morin g, hut there was no Jeuny-the Clerkot the Court lahouted out the name at the top of his l u <'2 e > * I "aj taken.up by the crowd outside, but still no Jenny I'vm forth coming. At length her agent a PP« ar ®“’ laud an affidavit made by Jenny, was read to the 1 Court. She stated, what was oi course true, that sec J khew nothing about the business, but it it was nc I vaaaary for her to appear she Wonld do so ; that she 1 <114 nut intend any disrespect by not attending to the lubpoana, &.C. The Judge thereupon graciously con- I iliacended to overlook tho matter, and Jenny was I dialharged from custody. The object ot the plau- 1 btfs counsel was doubtles to array M’llle Lind and conipella settlement, iu which doubtles ha has suc- I •reeded. By the bye I soe that the proceed ot Jenny » vimnty Concert exceeded $5,000. Tho store ship Erie, was sold nt auction, at the Na vy Yard yesterday, to Mr. Swift, of New-Bedford, for $13,000. She will be employed in the whaling trade. The death of Richard M. Johnson, has been suita bly noticed by our Common' Council—resolutions were passed—the flags in the City Hall were hoisted at half mast yesterday, and the officers of the Govern ment are to wear crape on their arms for thirty days. VVe are to have a special convention of the Episco pal Church in this city, on the 27th inst., when the subject of affirming a provisional Bishop of the dio cese, in the place of Onderdonk will be discussed.— Drs. Senbury and Whitohouse, are mentioned ns can didates, but the propriety of appointing one has .not yet been determined upon. A story has been circulated that Mrs. Forrest has withdrawn her suit agninst her husband, but it is not so, as 1 have reason to know. The trial is expected to come on within a few days, the witnesses are now in attendance. She sues for divorce on the ground ot adultery, of which there is said to be abundant proof. CHARLEMAC. Accident to Samuel Drurv, Jn.—This young man, whose name lias recently been prominently before the New-Y irk public, in connection with the Warner torpedo box myetery, alleged forgeries, <fec., received a very serious injury on Wednesday, at Ills father’s house in Astoria. The Commercial says : While prosecuting some experiments, of the exact nature of which we are not advised, with a torpedo box, in the garden attached to his father’s residence, ' he approached to examifle the cause ot some delay in the discharge, under the impression that the match hnd ceased to burn, and leuned over the missile at the very moment it exploded. The contents and fragments of the box struck him in various parts of his person but the principal wound was made in the throat, which was torn or cut in a schocking manner. He was immediately Amoved into -the house, and medical aid was summoned. The wound is very serious, but not necessarily fatal. It is of that char acter, however, to beprecarious, until the effects of it can be morejrUiniy seen. Important fro^m "Washington.—The financial and commercial correspondent of the Philadelphia Inquirer, in writing from New York on Thursday evening, says— We have rumors from Washington, coming with aotne degree ot authority, that tile Secretary of the Treasury will apply for a loan of thirty millions on the opening of Congress. This information may have no other basis than the payment of ten millions to Texas, but the parties who have had possession of it ior several days believe it, and have operated on it. Claims on Brazil.—A letter in the New-York Herald, Irotn Rio Janeiro, says: I learn that Mr. Tod, our minister to this court, has succeeded ia his liegociation fertile the payment of about $300,000 of claims of Americans against the Brazilian government.
