The English papers filled with accounts of the various demonstra te of tho popular feeling against the late move- Bait of the Pope. In order that our readers tnay utetand the tone or public sentiment in England, li regard to the matter,we give the following account (gthe celebration of Guy Eawke’s Day, the 15th of Sirember. The observance oi this day has fallen in. lofciee of lute years, but it seems to have served lie occasion for a very general and extravagant expression of the popular feeling of the Proteston 1 English against the Church of Rome. This sectarian tottroversy excitement bids fair to become quite as minus a matter iu the United Kingdom as is oufsla- ery difficulties in the United States. The following its description of Guv Hawke’s Day in London. From sn early hour on Tuesday morning the bye. drrelsofthe metropolis and its suburbs were rife villi the effigies of “ Guido Fawkees, ” while crowds of urchins in all directions called upon her Majesty’s litgctubjects, in sonorous tones, to Itemeuiber, remember, the fifth of November! Gunpowder, treason nad plot.’: A» the day advanced, “Guys of larger growth" pro- luted themselves in the more frequented thorough- lire?, attended by numberless idlers who kept up a uuniiig lircof pellets against the Pope and l’opery. In *mie cafes an attendant carried a bowl of whitewash ad a brush,,with which, ever and anon, he inscribed ihc walls und pavement, In rude characters, “No Po tty !’’ •• No Wafer Gods 1" “ No Catholic Humbug !" (sdrnnilnr ant^R^inanist expressions. The Guys received with more than usual welcftnoby the pcfalaCe; -,nd till* conductors of severul groups ao difficulty in levying a handsome “mail ’ on lit passengers. An impression having obtained that some demon" nation on a largo scale would be made in the vidn- iiyof the Roman Catholic Cathedral in St. Gerrge’s field, a great many persons assembled in that lieiuh- wliood, Hliout uiidduy. Beyond the occasional up- iear.iicc of un itinerant “Guy." howsver, these par- Htsfound nothing to gratify tlieir curiosity. Two or three householders, probably apprehensive, front lie proximity of tlieir residences to the Romish church, thutthey might be considered “followers of lot faith," and thus meet with rough treatment, ex- hibited placards hearing loyal and anti-Romanist in- triptions. One lusty Protestant, in letters three indies deep, called “God to preserve Queen Victo- ^idrom the Pope and Poperyanother inveighed ijainat the .worship of wafer gods, and a third exs ressedhi* unmitigatedoontempt for ull Catholic hum- “J. In (met, with these few exceptions, there was “thing to. distinguish the district of the Romish eu Vdralfrom any other part of the metroplis. About half an hour after noon there issued from hepuriieus of Farringdon market into Fleet street a ‘group of Guys ;" which, as well tYom theircolossal "teas by the amusement and laughter they occastmi- Gu their progress through the streets, must bcfalr- u ftonounced pageant of the dny. This group had evidently been “got up" by some zealous anti-Roman- [dregardless of cost. It consisted of about four- figures, (animate and inanimate)', presided over Vi colossal Guy about sixteen feet in height, who, ’levated in his chariot, a van drawn by two horses, "*scompelled to bow down considerably before he be made to pass beneath Temple bar. This igsaut including an animate effigy of tile new Citr- »al Archbishop of Westminster, attired hi the monieol robes of the Romish Church, and wearing le fed and broad brimmed hat appertaining to his oi- :e - The Cardinal was supported on the right by a •SUhh fellow habited in the robes of a nun, and the left by ajolly fat monk, who leered impu- under Ids mask at the passers by. There ’“also a second figure of n monk looking very lu sciously, and labelled, “St. Guy, the martyr.” 1 animate figure, holding a brush and a pail ot white '“liinscribed, “Hoi) Water for the Penitent;” a ls » in barrister’s robes, and three or four masks, “upletcd tho group. , iue van bore two large inscriptions—the one ‘ Car "“l St. Impudence going to take possession of his c eae in Westminster,*’and tho other, “Guy I* ox a strong glare over the neighborhood. The clllyy ot the cardinal was first ignited. This was the sig nal tor loud cheers, which were repeated again and again, and which were renewed as each of the other rjligies were caught by the flames. A splendid dis play of fireworks followed, including discharges of maroons, fiery meteors, Albert shells ot* snakes, tourbillons, n Victoria shell of all colors, &c. The ceremony concluded hv letting otf two tiro balloons, and a baud of music playing the national anthem, which was responded to by the vast concourse who gave numerous cheers. The display of rockets, Roinau, cftndles, squibs, and crackers was most extensive, and when uny of the above ^named devices were exhibited, the applause Irom the populace gave unmistakable . evidences that they were far from beim? satisfied with the l’ope’a recent appointments. Whilst) the fireworks were being let oil, a large figure, representing “ his holiness” on a donkey, was led into the ground. Tho animal wore a cardinal’s hat, and round his neck was hung a large bill, on Which wus printed “Wiseman/’ Several persons, representing “ right reverend fath ers, ” walked at the side ot the animal. The crowd gave several derisive chepra as the procession pass ed. Notwithstanding the precept from the Lord Mayor cautioning persons from either purchasing, selling, or discharging fireworks in the city, as soon ns it be came dusk sqme thousand persons took possession of Tower Hill, and a continuous discharge of fire works was kept up without intermissions for several hours. Some of the displays were very appropriate for the occasion, and one, of great splendor, in large Roman capitals, exhibited the words, “The* Queen, God bless her, and no Popery;” another, “The spee dy downhill of Popery,” &c. About eight o’c'ock in the evening a figure, repre- senting Cardinal Wiseman, most excellently “made up,” on horseback, preceded by two persons dressed so ns to represent Roman Catholic Bishops, emerged from an establishment in Wntling street. Having paraded the whole of Cordwainers’ ward amidst the hearty cheers of the inhabitants, the procession re turned to headquarters This was said to be the best representation of the cardinal during the day. A person who returned at night from Richmond, states that, the inhabitants, when he left, were show ing their disapproval,, inevery conceivable way, of the appointment made by the Pope. ' The discharge of fireworks and tho destruction of tho Pope’s effigy wereproceedingrapidly. At Guildford and Godalni- ing demonstrations of public disapprobation were al so shown in a manner not easily to be mistaken. On Tuesday evening, the service appointed for tho anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot was performed at St. Saviour’s Southwark, when every part of thut spacious edifice was most densely crowded. The sermon wa9 preached by the Rev. W. Curling, one of the chaplains, from the 3d Epistle of St. John, v. 9, 10; it occupied one hour abd a halt in its delivery, and was listened to with the most sedulous attention to the end. The sermon produced a great sensation and when the congregation arose to leave the church at the close of the sermon, the organ began to play the air ot the national anthem, upon which the con gregation suddenly commenced the words and sung two verses with great enthusiasm. Mr. Curling then succeeded in procuring a pause, and remarked that as some expression .in the remaining verses were not quite befitting the sanctity of the place, they had better substitute thedoxolqgy. The orgun then began to play “The Old Hundredth” and the people sang “Praise God, from whom all blessings flow,” with a fervor and universality that evinced their cordial concur rence in the sugc^stion9 of their pastor. The im mense concourse then separated. PRENTICE’S 1 'wesein Westminster,’ — . 7t . Cu *g to be canonised in tit. George’s-fields, and P^oral similar ones, such as “No Popfery,” &c. On Appearance in Fleet street, this group attracted an ^J^nse crowd, who greeted it with loud cheers p laughter. Several police officers were in atten- , ailCe i and uccompnnied the procession to the con- IDej of the city. After passing through Temple-bar, 10 “Cardinal” and the “Guy” were, conveyed “rough the Strand into r*ovent garden market, tbonce ,ac * into the Strand to Charing cross, and, alter Jttnui" * up Regent street down Bond street, returned . gn Whitehall, over Westminster bridge to tit. luge’s fields, where they arrived shortly alter tour dock.
