IHE MORNING NEWS.
Correspondence of the Daily Morning News.
NEW-YORK, NOV. 26,1850.
A very pleasant meeting took place to-day, at the
City Ra'l. between the committee of safety, appoint-
edatthe late Union meeting, and Gen. Cass, and
Howell Cobb, speaker of tho House of Representa
tives. The Committee expressed their thanks to
those gentlemen for their patriotic efforts at the last
session of Congress, in defence of tho Union and
Constitution, and trusted that they would, if neces
sity, continue to do battle in the same good cause ;
ill of which was responded to by'tlie gentlemen, who
promised not to flinch from their duty when the Un
ion was in danger, &c. &c. &c. The speeches were
short and to the purpose, and the meeting on the
whole, was a very gratifying one.
That affair at the Irving House, did not “come off”
on Monday, and the select, who expected a most de
lightful time with Jenny Lind, wero wofully disap
pointed and chagrined. There was a screw loose
somewhere, and it is whispered that Jenny Lind, dis
covering that it was a trick to gratify a certain set, at
ber expanse, very properly declined to be present,
■nd so the whole affair tell through. Poor girl, she
pay's deav.for har popularly, if all be true that I hear;
so shamefully was she bored, by unmannered people
here, that at one time she had almost decided to for
feit her contract, step quietly on board a steamer,
ind return to Europe. She had uo rest — not a
minute touring the day, that she could call her own,
W4j|yi»wn quietly to aonveraa with a friend She
conidnbtgointo the street without afflicting a crowd
sliphiir carriage. Eut she has escaped from tho boros
ofNew York, having left us yesterday, and I hope
tho South will show more consideration and gallant
ly, and suffer the plumageof the nightingale to remain
unruffled.
Tkemethodiat preachors of this city and neighbor
hood, or at least a party pretending to represent the
Methodist, have come out with a denouncement of
the. Fugitive Slave Hill, and demanding its immediate
and unconditional repeal. I have reason to know
thatthia movement has not been sanctioned by tlie
congregation;.- and most of the right thinking mem
bers of that sect regret it.
Capt. Stoddard, of the Crescent City, is to bo pre
vented with a costly silver trumpet, by the passen
gers on her last voyage, in token of their admiration
of bis manly and seaman like qualities. It may be
>11 very well, these offerings; but for my part I think
there is a great deal of humbug in such affairs. By
! »d by, wo shall have hackney couch drivers pro-
aented with tokens ot regard, for their skill in driving
«apirited pair of horses, and conveying one in
tifety to his home, through the manifold difficulties
of crowded thoroughfares.
We are in hourly expectation of a weeks’ later
sews by the Europe, from Europe. She has boen
0“t eleven days, and should have been nt Halifax ere
Ibis.
Tbedicision of. tho Marine Court Judge in the cose
f the chorus singers, in which Jenny Lind was a
btness,' is perfectly Solomcnish. One of the plaint-
*> Mrs. Teale, is married it seems, and therefore
“ e could not recover in her own name—the other,
' *■ Phillips, is a kind of married woman. She mar-
d a Lawyer named Evans, some years since; but
! bad another wife alive at the time; when she dis-
ovsred this, though tho wife died soon alterwnrds,
he left him, and married Austin Philips, a Musician
|t thisjeity; but subsequently they separated, and in
18 position Bhe remains at present; the Court,
, “"'t‘ver, took it for granted that a divorce had been
bta ined, and e judgement in her favor for $20
or his and her son’s service ; but the plaintiffs have
'[ P a y the cost, towards which, I presume, the $20
'ill hardly be a circumstance.
|he Bennett ccwhiding affair was before Judge
tt y yestordny, but nothing was done in it, und the in-
. e *hgadon stands adjourned. Neither Graham nor
. Murray, who assaltnd the officer on the occa-
llon , has been held to bail. Bennett and his wife left
csterday in the Ohio, for Havana.
The special Convention of the Protestant Episco-
Church met in St. John's Chapel this morning;
d it is supposed thut a provisional Bishop will be
■acted for this diocese. The action of the Council
Bishops authorizing this election, of course recog.
■saOnderdouk as tho Bishop, although suspended;
8 will therefore be entitled to his full salary, instead
“ho $2,500 per uin he hashitherto been allowed.
A very pretty girl about 16 years of age, named
r, e Tracy, arrived here yesterday morning in the
■■evidence bout, accompanied by a gentleman named

e alarm of the girl. It appears that they had eloped
cut Providence, Rhode Island, the day before, and
le father of tho girl immediately telegraphed the
le b with directions to arrest the party. They
2re taken back in custody, last night. That con-

A large fire occurred at noon to-day (it is scarcely
tlinguished yet) in tho large-etorage warehouse of
aahee, 35 South William-sL, in which a great
Uau fity of cotton, flour, &c., wus in storage; the
**•8 raged with considerable fierceness, and ex'
“ued to the store next door, occupied by Mr. Floyd'
■a loss is very great, and wiU probable reach 15 or
,000. It is supposed to have been occasioned by
aotaneoua combustion of the cotton,
gambling case has occupied the Circuit Court for
0 ® r three days past, and was decided this morning.
It was to recover back $3000 from the stake holder,
which waB staked against $2,500 on a race between
Lady Saffolk and Americus, four or five years since.
It was tried before, and a verdict rendered for the
plaintiff, but the Supremo Court reversed this, on the
ground that he had consented, after the race, that the
money should be given up; this decision was aga.n
reversed by tho Court of appeals, and tho case came
back for trial. The Jury gave a verdict for the plain
tiff, lor the $3000, but without interest.
CIIARLEMAC,
Mysteries of Cambridge.—A scries of wonder-
lul doings has recently como to light in our sister city
of Cambridge, Mass. The facts and circumstances,
ure these:—Captain Crockett returned from a foreign
voyage ot about two years, duration, ush’ort time
since. During his absence his wife and daughter,
the latter said to be quite captivating in her manners,
and rejoicing in the poetic ugo of “sweet sixteen,*,
have been keeping house at Cambridge. Capt Crock-,
etttrom time to time made remittances, the manage-
/V en ?n?- wh ! ch Wa8 corj f'ded to a prominent man in
C. This ot course made it necessary tor him to
make frequent visits to Mrs. Crockett. Thus mat
ters proceeded for two years, while the captain was
braving the dangers of the sea. On his return, a
short time since, as above stated, he repaired to Cam
bridge and his family, when lol and behold! they
were both found to be in peculiar condition for per
sons not practically in the matrimonial state. Capt.
Crockett immediately sought the guilty party and
demanded $5,000 as a settlement of the matter. He
rejoined by accusing Cr- ckettwith attempting to ex
tort money from him. C. was subsequently arrested
and pu t under $500 bonds to appear at court on Fri
day Inst. On Thursday, the day previous, Copt.
Crockett left* for Mobile, taking his daughter with
him, since which time nothing 1 bus been heard Irani
him. His wife and two children are now at Cam
bridge. It is not publicly known how the matter
was arranged, though it is quietly suspected that
some sort of a compromise was made.
[Boston Herald.
Elopement—-Miss Jane Tracy, aged 18, of Pro'
dence, It. I, eloped from that place on Monday with
James Hall, aged 43, who has a wife and family in
Buffalo. They were arrested the same night in New-
Yora, in consequeuce of a telegraphic dispatch from
the lady's father, and will be esuorted back to Provi
dence by the first ci nveyance.
Baltimore contains a population of 169,125,
including 3124 slaves. Ir. 1840 the population was
102,313. Of the slave population perhaps one half
are only nominally slaves.
On the Bbidge.—Three weddings recently took,
place “on the Bridge” at Harper’e Ferry. Ot course
they were all runaway matches from Virginia, where
marriages are illegal without the consent of til3 pa
rents of the parties to them.
53P" The Population of tho Sandwich Islands ap
pears to be on the decrease. The Polynesian remarks,
that though Captain Cook estimated it at 460,000, it
is now less than 80,00(1, and still diminishing. Tho

ply of laborers, the productions of the Islands
could be increased to $@0,(^0,000 In value. Ratifica
