Katk. ■'■"’I the morning news. Tin* New York Methodist Preachers and the Fugitive {Slave Bill The lute abolition proceedings oi'the “Preacher's | MflBtki?”composed of some thiq|y methodist clergy- n of N. York and adjoining ,districts, we are glad tee hiu given, mucti dissatisfaction to a portion of the I laity of that church. The Journal of Commerce aad Erprcss publish several communications from members of the methodist church, some ot which I comment severely on the gratuitous and highly rep- I r&ensible action of the preachers on the subject of I the .Slave Law. One of the write s in thu Journal i the following language:— Itisrenumbered, nnd painfully remembered, by I many of the laity of the Methodist Episcopal Church | in this city, Brooklyn, Williurasburg and elswhere, I that the Methodist Episcopal Church in these United l States was rent m twain by an act ot the last Geu- [eralconference, held in this city, several yean since, I in deposing a Southern bishop, against whose spot less character nothing could bn brought (even by J men of kindred spirit to the thirty preachers,) ex- I cept that he had married a lady owning slkves. And Inovrwe have the Methodist Episcopal Church South laud the Methodist Episcopal Church North. Who [can toll the amount of political disaffection anddis- |union that may be justly chargeable upon this wick- led division of one of the largest bodies of the Prot- I estant Church, that in “happy days of yore” knew I no “North” nor ‘^outh,” It has been said thut the meeting, whose resolutions I we published, was not entitled .to speak for the Meth- I odist Clergy of New- York, and : that tho refusal ot the IpdiCr of tlve Adoocaic and Journal to insert their pro* leeedin::m: *. •'idouce, thut they did not .^4et the Iippru.ru 1 of the > • i or or of the clergymen general! y, loftlie M* theidift. The following paragraphs, however, | •from a communication of one of the preachers com- Ipoiiug the meeting, which appears in the New York ^Ommcrcial Advertiser, addressed to the editor ot that nper in reply to his strictures on the resolutions, |wd!expluin how much importance is to bo attached - these statements. The writer says:— A few inaccuracies in your remarks require to be corrected. 1 regret thut the ‘•honor” so liberally lie- ■towed oa the Chrjstain Advocate and Journal, is in pome danger of being rather short-lived, since it was rendered under a misapprehension ot the tacts.— nhe esteemed editor, of that paper tons among those wo voted for the obnoxious resolves, Hiui not cunteut rith u silent attirmative. he declared his approval oj When requested to give them a place in his pa per, he declined I or prudential reasons. I 1 think you cannot be correctly informed as to the loinposition of the preachers' meeting, when you lomplain of it as ‘•assuming to speak tor all the V'tliodist ministers in thifr city, Brooklyn and Wil- Pamsburg” 1 have not seen any thing that seemed pie such an assumptio i, unless it is in the chiracter if tho body itself; but if such is the assumption, I •Pprehend it is not far from the truth ; for more than frfourths of the whole number were present, and of jhc absentees I have not heard that a single one ais- ffrom that uction. On mrsday evening last, a considerable number ot ‘•lueatialgentlemen, entertaining opinions in favor ’ Free Trade, assembled at the Irving House, in ew-York, and took the preliminary 6tcps for torm- .? the nucleus of a tree trade party in that city. I* resolution was passed declaring the basis of ft association to bo absolute free trade, the rogation of all indirect taxation, and the substitu- l°n of direct taxation for the support of the gov- lament. A committee was appointed to draw up a Station for the association, which takes the name the Free Trade League, and another committee to frepare an address to the people.
