NE W-\ ORK, NOV. 29,1850.
The Special Convention finds it rather a diilicult
matter’to fix upon a Provisional Bisliop foi* this dio
cese—they were in session until 1 o'clock this morn-
and although five or 8ix ballots* were tuken,"
neither of the candidates could get- the necessary
Dumber of votes. Drs. Seahurry and WMtehouse
were the favorites, t it the high and low church were
qually divided that no result could be arrived at,
but to disagree. Dr. Williams, ot the College at Hart
ford, Connecticut, spoiled the projects of the above
twain, and their names were ultimately withdrawn.
Dra. Southgate and Williams then entered the field,
ut it was of no use,nud as a dernier resort,’ the friends
of these gentlemen were requested tobecomea Com
mittee of Conference, to agree upon the candidate
and report to-day. At the last accounts, however,
no report had been mhde, so that it is yet very
doubtful if any election takes place. A great many
of the delegates are opposed to all action in the case,
and deny the authority of the Standing Committee to
call the Convention; and they will defeat action if
possible. A resolution has been adopted to pay the
Bishop, on the day he is Consecrated, all that remains
of the Episcopal fund, after paying Dr. Onderdonk
his $2,500. From this it would appear that it ib not
intended to pay Dr. O. any large salary. If he be the
Bishop, however, defacto, de can certainly claim a
Bishop’s stipend.
The Herald to-day, contains copies of the docu-
TpneEts in the unhappy Forest affair ; but it is most
unfair to publish them, if, a:> I hear, tho trial of Mrs.
F’s. suit for divorce is to he proceeded with in a few
days. The uncontradictcd statements of the husband
jrenow spread before the public, and as it is likely to
prejudice her suit alone, the motive for, and the party
making tho publication, many be shrewdly suspect
ed. There was a rumor, however, that the lady
had abandoned the suit; and it is said that she was
Been walking with Mr. F. in Broadway, a few days
since, whieb, if true, would give some coloring to
the rumor. I hope, for tho sake of all parties, that a
'compromise may yet be effected.
A meeting was held last night by several influen
tial persons of this city, for the purpose of forming u
“Free Trade League” to advocate the abolition ot in
direct taxation, and to establish Free Trade and di*
rect taxation for the support of the General Govern*
mient. A committee was appointed to draft a consti.
tution and bye laws for the League.
Several persons were injured by the falling ot the
walla of the building in South William-et., when the
fire occurred on Wednesday—they tell on a wooden
shanty, and it is a wonder that every one witflin it
was not killed.
Bennett of the Herald, as I stated in iny Inst letter,
started with Ilia wife for Havana, in the Ohio, on
Tuesday, nt the very time that the investigation o
the cowhiding affair was going on before Judge Daly»
and when his presence was required to undergo a
cross examination ns demanded by defendant’s coun-
It is now argued that as he failed to appear, the
charge against Mr. Graham must be dismissed, which
Bennett's'counsel denies; but I believe the Judge
will so decide. The truth is that New-York was get
ting too hot for Mr. B.; lie has been harraseed lately
with civil and criminal prosecutions, and ns he was
stepping aboard the Ohio, was served with yet another
process, nt the suit of Mr. Wilkes of the Police Ga
zette, for. libel. His triul for libel on Major Noah was
to come on next term in the Court of Sessions, and
nBtroug effort would have been made to send him to
Blackwell’s Island, if convicted, and it might have suc
ceeded. It is said that he will not return to New
ark for a long tjine.
Aeuriouscase is now before the Superior Court here,
being a suit by the widow of a deceased gentleman
named llidgway, who died intestate, leaving an es
tate worth $150,000, which is claimed by the children
°f 8 former wife, who got a divorco from him on
the ground of infidelity. It was contended i y them
that the second marriage was illegal, and therefore
t^plaiMiff’lius no claim to the estate, or any por
tion of it. This is a nice question, and the decision
the.Court is looked for with some interest.
I’hero is nothing worthy of note transpiring in the
% to-day,. Wo arc enveloped in a foggy, damp, misty
atmosphere, irioBt disagreeable and most unhealthy. If
toe bill of mortality is net increased considerably
tois week, 1 shall bo agreeably deceived. Thefoggs
ar eno\v very dense of a morning, and steamboats
arrive very irregulurly. In many of the oilices dowu

A Kentucky Heroine.—A letter, from Frankfort,
Ky., in the Louisville Journal says:
The hide grans region was the scene, Wednesday,
6th, of an anomalous and tragical occurrence. It is
the more tragical bccouse the principal actor (or ac
tress) is a woman. Be it remembered also that she
moves in good society, and is, or was, a9 much res
pected ns any lady m Paris. May her good name
lose nothing by her chivalry and conjugal affection.
Three men of bully repatution went into the house
of a gentleman in Paris, Ky., and asked his wife when*
he was, avowing their business to bo to tie him up and
whip him for slapping the mulatto child of one of
their chums. She replied that he was in his shop.—
They went off and tho followed them into the shop
unperceived, and picked up a mallet and chisel.—
One of the men drew a knile and pistol and advanced
to the husband, who cornered, squalling murder.
The lady, however, advunced with necessary speed,
and dealt the assailant a blow with the mallet upon
the shoulder, dislocated it, and silbqced him.
The Becond was met by the woman, and a blow
with tho same instrument, dealt with such force cu
the forehead ns to break the skull, put him hors de
combat.. The heroine turned to her husband and
found him tussling with the third on the floor. She
went to work upon this third gentleman’s head as
deliberately as circumstances allowed, and succeed
ed in relieving her husband from all fear of •■murder"
at his hands. All the gentlemen assailants had to be
packed home. 1 have this statement- otthe facts
and diameters connected with this afiuir from a gen
tleman of undoubted veracity, who came from Paris-
since the occurrence.
1 have heard of such heroism before, hut not since
tho days of Boone, Logan, and Kenton. She must
have some of their blood in her veins. Just imag
ine a woman, weighing scarcely 120 pounds, of mild
countenace and modest mien, facing three ruffians
and flamming out the trio with no aid but that of her
husband in tripping one of them.
The School Mistress and her Canine Friend.
—A young lady of one of the northern towns of this
county while engaged in teaching school the past
summer, fltfcw miles'from her home, was singled
out towards?he close of her engagement without uny
apparent inducement, by the dog of one of her en\-
pioycrs, as tho peculiar object ot his regard, which
soon unaccountably increased to such u degree that
he could scarcely ho beaten frfiui her side ,or preven
ted from entering the school house to which be daily
repaired. At the termination of her school, which
she left in failing health, when about to start for her
parental residence the dog gave signs of his deter
mination to follow her, which ppreeiving she turned
to the owner, and soon effected the purchase of the
animal, which now jtjyt-twiy--sttcnded her home.—
Her first words on entering the house were—“Moth
er, 1 have come home to die and have brought A
friend here to watch over my grave" Af ter making
this announcement she immediately took to her bed
and sunk rapidly in a typhoid which in ubouta week
terminated in her death. During her whole sickness
the faithful and evidently sorrow-stricken dog, never
but for a few moments at a time left the sick room,
constantly lying dejectedly near the bend of her bed,
and seeming but too blest when permitted to lick her
fevered hand, which was occasionally extended for
his tender caresses.
As her final hour drew near, ho became indifferent
about fuod, and soon refused it altogether. After
her death, which he seemed to comprehend, he con
tinued to watch by the corpse, only atone time leav
ing it, and that wus when the coffin case, which hav-
ing arrived with tho coffin, was carried and placed
by the side of the grave previously dug in an en
closure near the house. He. then, having'somehow
Jjoeu mndeawure of Wha| W14H going on, caiue.putof
the house, went to the ca-e', tmff with his paws *n the
side, looked in, and seemed to examine it attentively.
He next jumped down into tho grave, and appeared
to inspect that also with equul caro and attention.—
He then came out and hurried back to his post by the
corpse, which ho continued to watch till it was
brought out lor interment, when he closely followed
the coffin, and looked sorrowfully on, as it was low
ered to its final resting place, and tho grave filled up
Whon’his human fellow mourners retired, however,
he remained behind, and lying down at the head of
the grave, could not be induced to leave the spot, re
fusing, for the first few days, all food, then, for a
week or two sparingly receiving it when brought to
him, and at last, going occasionally to the house for
it, but only to despatch in haste what wus set before
him, and return to his end and lonely vigil, which
night and day, lie still continues to keep over the re
mains of his beloved mistress.—Vermont Freeman.
