J„ on lie discovery of a new element call Stame, which is produced from Steam. He showed, that it required but four degrees of heat applied to steam to double a volumeot it heated apnrt from water; nnd but six. Wu degrees of heat to treble a volumeof steam heat td spurt from water. This cubatance, thus acquired [ram the heating of steam, is denominated Stame, udfs considered a distinct chemical element more lonomical nnd immensely greater in value than Mr. Frost pointed out a vast variety of uses, to which a motive power so economical could be put; prticulurly its applicability to locomotives or coaches rommeu and piank roads. The general results showed that more than six Smesthe motive force was realized from equal qu. n- litiesof heat and water, when employed to actuate tkenpinewith hented steam orstame, than was ob tainedfrom the useof uaturalsteam—each heingalike educed from the same constantfire and time, and me engine, which engine, apparatus and scientific itrui'icnts are described in this work; and tes-ti- niiilj of competent nnd respectable engineers are mi lor inspection. Mr. Frost had a working mod- iiu the room", and gave actuul experiments of pronnsitions he advanced. A new anecdote of the songstress is a treat fallowing from tho Literary World—an excellent #per—(by tiio way) id well told. Jenny Lind anecdotes are, as might be anticipated, c single gossip of the town ; and had we a Horace filpole to perpetuate them, posterity would be the Micro! much fun and wisdom in the retrospect of •50. One of these stories which everybody knows, mime or two social and general moralities weaved nwitu it. which puts it rotltar beyond the small talk pfthe hour. Si non c vero c.bcn trovalo. On the arrival itkr rooms of several lady visitors specially invited, 'nay sees a strange lace amongffhem, the owner of hick had pushed n point of propriety-tor the sake of elfonae—in being present, in making tho rounds of leclikirs, the Queen of Song fell in with the advert- irous unknown. -'What, madam, do you want I” 1 tune heard you sing and have come to see you." ’)oyou take me for a wild beasf, that you come to tniei” was the emphatic English of the indiuuant l'ly. The lady's mortification finds vent in a flood bars and an immediate movement for the dour.— mny locks it and pocket', tile key, am* vainly seeks the piano to sing nwuy the mischief. "You aldii’t mind it,” says Jenny, “Z can't be good HR»." On talking the ntfair over with her friends, oaskedhowshehad behaved, and was answered ery rudely.” “That," she replied, "is the first me I have heard anything but a compliment in Attic - fa.' 1 What would Mrs. Gore or the author of"Julio re,” give for n scene like this? At Syracuse (N. Y.) a few days since, tho villiage filled with large placards which read thus: "The sho kissed Jenny Lind is now here; he will give eve (at a place and time mentioned) a lecture tail tlie details of his adveuturo with the i’lus- ku singer—ecL Tickets $1." The rainy aea- '*<* commenced, nnd hindered the bringingm ot | Coirespondence of the Daily Morning News.J NEW-YORK, DEC. 2d, 1850. 1 am sorry to 6ce that the fanatics at the South are following the example of those attheNorth, and seem disposed to continue tho excitement, which is deprica- ted by a very large portion of tho public on this side of Mason St Dixon's line. E have no doubt that the immense meetings that have been held here and else where in favor of the laws, the Constitution and the Union, have produced a very great change in the mi’’ds of many, who wero not previously disposed to view tho subject ill a cold and dispassionate way, and that sound, sober sense, are having n salutary effect. In this scctiou wo hear little or nothing about tlie Fugitive Slave Law; tho dnrkios even are silent, and though in tho event of another arre»t, mischieveour f ‘pirit8 might succeed in creating a-riotous demonstn- tion, be ussured the law will always be enforced here, even at tho point of the bayonet, should it he ioiutd necessary to use such arguments. Tlie conduct ol the Boston authorities in the case of Crafts, is very generally condemned, and bad the President seen tit to remove the Marshal, tho act would have been commended. It would be well if those at tho South abstained from any inflammatory materials to thocauldron, be cause, otherwise tbeexiitemont would die out, and they should he satisfied, from the evidence already afforded, that the outcry is made chiefly, by a com paratively small number of insane creatures, or by interested parties, who live by agitation. It reminds me n good deal of the conduct of the late Daniel O' Connell in the matter of "Repeid”—who, so long as lie agitated that question, was drawing his "r/nt * from the pockets ot the “ down-trodden, starving population." Tlie F.piscopal Church of this diocese is still deem- ed to be without a Bishop, but l do not Bee that tlie Church has suffered from this cause,) or that its efli. ciency has, in tlie slightest degree, been affected.— The lay members of the late special Convention, prevented the election, for it is but justice to the clericul uni's to say that they were tolerably harmo nious, mid had the choice been solely with them, the diocese would now have had a Bishop. There is some alarm felt here for the safety of the steam propeller Helena Sloman, which was to leave Hamburg ou tlie 2d Nov. If she did so, there is ceriaiuiy good reason for alarm. The Arctic, of Collin’s Liverpool Line, is now in her twelfth day.— This line does not keep up to tlie time made by the Atlantic and Pacifc on their first trips; but of cour.-e tlie season oi' the year, is unfavorable. She will bring four days later m-wsahau the Europa, namely to the 20th November. Thut purfy at the Irving Housa, at which Jenny Lind wus to be present, and u service of plate pre sented to Cajit. West, of tlie Atlantic, bus not yet Cotne off, and they do say, lias been indifinitely post poned. Tlie clique who got up the affair are wofully disconcerted. We are in the enjoyment of the most remarkable wrathor, bright bvilHhiit, glorious. VYe are in a high state of health too, tlie deaths in the city last week, numbered 316; by far tho greater portion being chil dren. The Democrats here, arc to meet at Tammany Hall, on Friday night, und arrangements will be made to mark appropriately, the death of Col. Richard M. Johnson. It is proposed to deliver an oration, nnd to sing a requiem, writteu for the occasion by Gen. Geo. Pnllerris. The journeymen printers of this city. Philadel phia, Boston nnd other places, propose holding a Nationnl Convention, ao thnt a general co-operation of the trade may be obtained, so ns to maintain the price of labor, and build up a syst-in whereupon faj r prices may be secured to tlie craft. The value of cottons entered at the Cnstom House last week, for consumption was 872,668; and of silk $174,928. Entered for warehousing, cottons, $40,- 403; silk, $90,40. The Standard, a democratic morning paper, revived here by Col. Munford. just before the last election has again stepped out. It was a kind of speculation on thP generosity of Cass, and came cut for him for the next Presidency. But it would'nt do. the Gono- ral would net ‘ poney up” for its support, so the would be Cass organ, had to go the way of all—news, papers.
