SAVANNAH, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 18, 1850. PRENTICE 7 ! Spobtb, Fbuitu, Sec. of Cali fori a.—A correspon dent of the Mobile Tribune, writing from California, says— I am now ju6t returned from a tour to the Sierra Nevada range of mountains, N. E. from this place. Our pnvty consisted of one American only, besides myself, all the rest being Chilians, and in woodcraft they nre equal to any Indians. The object of our visit to that dreaded region of grUley bears and In dians, was the assurance which we had received of a rich placer of gold ; but some error in the direc tions misled us and we did nottind it. I was. how ever, very much gratified with the trip ; having en joyed to my fill the pursuit of grisley bear and acer, and, tomy delight, grouse and patridges. The elk and antelope, which are abundant in California, pre fer the plains to the mountains, but we saw neither of them.' My surprise was complete whon I found raspber ries, currents, gooseberries and cherrieB, of the lat ter two varieties, and as I plucked them, in every direction the high peaks of the mountains wore cov ered with snow. All tho varieties ot pine, fir, cedar, and arborvita grow in the valleys of this range to a size beyond anything 1 had ever seen. I measured a fallen pine, which was by no means the largest 1 saw, 7 feet 9 inches in diameter at tho butt, and 93 yards in length. There is timber enough in this mountain range to rebuild the navies of the world. [For the Daily Morning Neies.} >Tla Sweet to Know that We are Loved* , BY ANNIE LEE. I. "Pis sweet to know that wa are loved By loving hearts and tried ; It sweetly adds to life a charm, Whatever ills betide. ii. •Tis sweet to know that We are loved, Wherever we may roam; To know that true and loving hearts Are thinking of us home. in. 'Tis sweet to know that we are loved, When wand'rings all are through; It oft, to know a welcome waits, The sting takes irom “ adieu.” IV. ’Tis sweet to know that we are loved, And is it too not sweet, To know that dear and watching eyoa Grow, brighter when we meet! v. 'Tis sweet to know thnt we are loved, To feel we've east one ray Of light end love around the path Of life’s oft clouded way. ' ' v : VI. * ; ■ 'Tis sweet to know that wo are loved By one whose love will be Unchanged through a'llife's chequered econo, And through eternity. Savannah, Dec 19. HP In the House of Representatives, on Tliurs- day a bill was read authorising the Secretary of War to allow tho State of Georgia interest on the amount which had been advanced by that State during the var with the Creek and other Indians; such interest only to be allowed, however, where it had been paid ,or incurred. . Pleasures of Lying in Bed.—Leigh Hunt is said to have perpetrated every bad pun connected With tlie dormitory, and which made Charles Lamb laugh immoderately. Going home together late one night, the latter repeated the proverb. 11 A home, a home, however homely.” Somebody has called it » bundle oipsraduxea; we go to it reluctantly, and leave it with regret. Once within the downy precincts of the four posts, how loth we are to make our exodus into the wilderness ofltfe. We are ns enamored ol bur curtained dwelling as if it wdro the Lund ot Goshen or the Cave of Circe. Ami how many i'erveut vojvs hive the dumb bedposts heard broken I evory fresh per jury rising to join its cloud of hovering fallows, each morning weighing heavier and heavier on our duggard eyelids. A caustic proverb says—we are all "good risers atnight;” hut wo's me for our agility in the morning; it is a failing of our species, ever ready to break out in all of us, and in some only vanquish- -ed alter a struggle painful as the sundoring oi bone «ud marrow. „ The great Frederick ot Prussiafound iteasier in after life to rout the French and Austrians, than in youth to reaist the seductions of sleep. After many single banded attempts at reformation, he had at last to call to his assistance an old domestic, whom he charged, on pain of. ismiasal, to pull him out ot bed at2 o’clock. The plan succeeded as it deserved to succeed. AH men of aciion are impressed with the importance of early rising. “When you begin to ■turn in bed its time to turn out,” says tho old dune; and we believe his practice has been in accoidance with bis precept. „ , Literary mnu-among whom.an llulwer says, a cer tain indolence seems almost constitutional—-are not «" clenr on this point; they are divided between night and morning, thouchthe best author ties seem in favor of the latter. tfarly rising is thebesteiter it is the only lnugthener of life that mka ever devised. By its aid the great Button was able j to spend half a century—an ordinary lifetime a 1 his desk, and yet had time to be the most momi '* | the philosopher a who then graced the gay meti op ot* France.—Household IVords. . The Bounty Land Law.-Ws llarn, from tho pension Office thnt, in answor to various inquiries re Dative to the bounty land act of Sept. 28. 1850, deci | lions have been made as follows : j 1. I No Seaman, nor any other person belong! g | Uavy proper, is entitled to land. And no tcamste. or ■ artificer is entitled to land. Persons who wore tn I S«ged in the removal of the Cherokees fvom Geor- I S'», in 1836, or in removing Indiana at any time, are Dipt entitled to land. piP A good one ia told by an English paper of an olcilady who had received n letter from her son, a sailor on board a merchantman, which ran thus : ‘‘Have been driven into the Bay of Funday by a pampoosa right in the teeth. It blowed great guns, and we carried away the bowsprit, a heavy sea wash ed overboard the binnucle and companion; the cap tain lost his quadrant, and couldn’t tnke an observa tion for fifteen days; at last wa arrived safe at Hali fax." The old woman who conld not rend herself, got a neighbor to repeat it to her three or four times, until she had got it by heart; she thensullied out to tell the story. “O, my poor son I” “■Why, what’s the mattor, mother—I hope no mis chief!'' “O, thank God. he’s ssfe—but he has been driven into the Bay of Firmnnent by a bamboozle right in teeth—it blowd great guns, and they carried away the pulpit—a heavy seu washed overboard tho pin nacle of the tabernacle—the captain lost his conjura tion arid couldn’t get any salvation for fifteen days— at last they arrived safest Hallelujah." “Ln, bless us, what a wonder they wasn't beat to atoms.
