The Widow. A widow is a dangerous thing, With soft, black shining (furls, And looketh more bewitching Than a host of romping girls; Her laugh is so delicious— So knowing, clear, beside, You'd never dream her thinking Soon to become a bride. Her dress, though made of 6ables, Gives roundneas to her form— A touch ot something thought!ul, A witching, winning charm; And when she site down by you, With quiet, easy grace, A tear may fall unbidden, Or a smile light up her face. Her voice is soft—melodiouB— And lute-like in its tone; She sometimes sighs, “ 'Tis dreadful To pass through life alone;” ' And then she'll tell you, you remind her Ofthe loved one dead and gone, Your steps, your form, your features; Thus the widow will run,on. Oh ! listen, yet be careful. For well she plays her part, Her lips distil the nectur That doth enslave the heart; Be euarded, or she’ll win you. With sighs, and smiles, and tears; 1' faith she’ll wear the breeches, ton, And box your silly cars. mou with other journals of the country, for giving them currency. This, of course, is nut just, as we badfno lesson to bfliove that the statements pub lished by us were not true; but we enn easily ap preciate and excuse the irritability and bitterness which such gross deceptions were calculated to ex cite. Kentucky Legislature.—A bill has justpassed the Kentucky Legislature which prohibits the trans. portation of negroes across the Ohio river by own- era or keepers of ferries, except in company of ill dir owners, or by their written authority in the form ot a power of attorney duly acknowledged, certified, and recored, and imposes for every such offence a forfeiture ofthe ferry right, a fine oi $200. and makes the owners or keepers of the ferry liable, in addition for tho lull value of the slave. PRENTICE’S ■From tit* New-Orleans’ Delta. , • A Fearful Responsibility. We are informed by gentlemen recently from Call- I foroia, that a worm and strong feeling of indigna- I tion has been excited throughout that State, and I particularly among tile new emigrants, against Messrs. I fremont and Butler King, for their alleged misre- I presentations of the country, in their publications in | tue States. These misrepresentations are uverredto | be ot the most palpably and notoriously false char- Iictcr. A highly respousible gentleman assured us I ibatit would nut be sale for either of the individuals I referred to, to trust themselves in the mines We |'vere alow to credit such serious and damning impu- I tutions against men, who have been honored wiih I lliecoufidence of the people, but the source from I which these charges emanate, and the.particularity ■ with whicu they are brought forward and sustained, Bleave us no excuse for disbelief. If they are true, ■ a learlul responsibility will be thrown upon the lhwmless speculators, who have thus sported with Ittelives and happiness of thousands. An immense ■timber of persons have beeh decoyed trom coin- ■forcible homes by the glowing and extr-ivugant de- licriptions which have beeu put niioat respecting the ■faciliiy with which fortunes could be made iu the ■mines. [ There is no escape from this responsibility on the plea of the generality of the descriptions and the uni- persality of the reports upon which they were found ry Men occupying the podtions ot Fremont und filler King, were under a solemn obligation to us- jwhiin the truth of every Statement issued by them. [Oiey eitlier neglected to do this and credited idle and Tnupported rumors, or they purposely disseminated file most false and deceptive accounts oi the couutry in order to promote their own speculations. Oueil- firtrstion was given which may be taken bb a tair Ipscimeo of the general character of those misrep- fvsimtations. It will be recollected that Mr. T. But- f r King published a glowing and extravagant des- Mptiun of tho richness of the quurtz ruck, from Niich, by means of simple machinery gold in large [unties could he extracted. This publication went ‘oto every part of tile country, and excited in thou- ’nuls a desire to emigrate, which would not have "issessnd them even from previous descriptions. Jois mass of emigrants was composed of tho.e who Ini some means, , ho possessed skill in tho applica tion of machinery, and would not have been willing T’goto the country to engage in the drudgery ot prie physical labor, such as that of miners. J 0| c gentleman from an adjoining State who had [spital, energy, and skill, invested some $2500 in the lecasaarv machinery, and hired twenty good hands I'Uiccompany him to California, with a view of work- fS the quartz rocks. On his arrival in California he puceeded with his machinery and hands to the very pea ludicHted by Butler King, as that in which this |"«rtz rock abound d. Hare he found a great quan to °t the rock, but was astouished to observe that i miners, instead of being engaged in beating up i rock were digging in the beds of streams tiiteen N twenty feet deep, and makings bare support I' 10 the produce of tile most severe and exhau ting lp Jr - Hi) enquired oi them where the quartz rock Paid be found in the grea’est abundance. They plied that any quantity of it could be found any here. “Well," asked our informant, “why don t Set the gold out of it." “Gold out of it!” re- P‘d tho miners, “you may get blood out ol a turnip plore you can find a gruin ui gold in this rock; il “>t lellow Butler King, ever comes out here, we h i beut his bones up smaller than we have beaten Pbieofthut rock in pursuit of gold.” I Our friend, however, determined to sntisfy him I". went to work on the ruck and continued beating I U P,until he was reminded that if he went on working l Ul >s unprofitable employment, lie would oeout ol ["visions before bis labors could yield him anything. 1“ therefore, abandoned the region ot quartz rock, [d leaving his expensive machinery behind him, [seceded to another purtof the country, where ne I"tked longenough to get the means ot coining home. F 1 ' 8 , gentleman is a highly respectable citmen, a r ur gi»n by birth, and perfectly resp tnsibm tor his Fitment. Ho pronounces Mr. Butler King s pubh- fHon a tissue of gross and eruel falsehoods from FSining to end. He also avers that the statements [‘Peeling the richness of Fremont’s possessions, nro | u »lly unfounded and false,—to use hl * P8e, “I would not give a blind mule for all the gold Ft could be found iu the lands which Fremont pre- lids to own.” having been instrumental In giving circulation to Me statements, we deem it cur duty to igive pqu»l IWicity to the denial and falsification ot Pantile witnesses. We have received communna- from persons who have gone to California un ’ 'base false representations, censuring u» in, com- Columbus. (Ohio,) Dec. 12.—The Committee on Federal Relations, iu the House reported a seripe of resolutions denouncing the Fugitive (Slave law, which were laid on the table. In the afternoon Governor Wood delivered his in- ngural address and was sworn. He vindicated the constitutionality ofthe Fugitive Slave Law and warn ed tile people ot Ohio to beware how they followed the lead ofthe people of South Carolina in resisting the laws of Congress. Threatening Aspect of F.uaurEAN Affairs. —The war going on in GreRt Britain, between Pro testant and Catholic, is certainly one of the n^ost re markable spectacles in the many extraordinary per formances just now going on in Church and State, abroad. While all Germany is bristling with bayo nets and pikes,—Prussian ready to massacre Aus trian, whenever the word of command comes from St. Petersburg, Vienna, or Berlin—all Great Britain is bristling with indignation against the Pope of Rome; Protestant, ready to extirpate Catholic as soon as the command to do so comes from the civil and eccleal- nstical authorities of the kingdom.
