MORNING, DECEMBER 20, 1850. Single Hunter, Two teals. THE MORNING NEWS. From the Baltimore Sun. Jenny Lind and the School Children. It was announced on Friday, in tho public schools of this city, that Miss Lind had consented to give a free concert to the public school scholars, and on Sat urday morning, before nine o'clock, there could not have been less thun ten thousand children, of both sexes, accompanied by their teachers und the Pu nic School Commissioners assembled around the Front street theatre. The doors were shortly alter thrown (,pen, when it was discovered that the building would not accommodate mure than une half of the eager ap plicants for admission. However, the girls alone were’permiued to occupy the house, and at leutt a thousand of these were still unable to be accommo dated. The theutre presented a grand sight after their entrance, and the time was spent until ten o'clock in singing, their music teacher leading them ironi the stage. Shortly beiore 10 o’clock M iss Lind arrived, and observing the doors of the theatre closed, and an immense throng of buys waiting outside, expressed her surprise that they were not opened, buttwhen she reached the stage and saw tho thretre packed with one dense muss of girls, her astonishment, was very great. She gave directions that the concert should commence immediately, determining to hur ry through the first part, so ss to dismiss the girls nudlet the boys come in. At ten the tirst part of the concert was commenced, which lusted an hour, daring which Miss Ltn.l sang an ai -mostdelight- fully to the gratification ot the young people, who applauded her very spiritedly—followed by the fiute * ng, which she warbled in her usual style. It was plain to perceivu, however, that the lair songstress was effected by some cause, which developed Used at the close of the first part when, after conversing privately with her, the conductor of the orchestra— 41. Benedict—addressed the girls, and told til m that Miss Lind requ utod him to say that not another note would be pluyed or sung until the house wui cleared, und the children who were waiting outside in the c,,ld fur admission should be allowed to en ter. He also observed that us they had been present tor nearly two hours, aiid heard something very pleasing to them, he hoped that they would see the justice of the proposition, nud ut once vacate the teats, which was done Tlius Miss Lind's uncon cern sod apparent dejection were explained. When the others entered the huuse, to tne number ot 3.UUU a scene ensued which completely beggars descrip tion. At her request, the boys and girls (a thousand of the latter sex were in the parquettc) sang “HailCu lumbia, Happy Land," und the WHy they exhibited their vocal powers exceeded all former efforts. Miss Lind,up m hearing this, wus almost overcome with joy, she clapped her hands, waved her hundkercliief, and gave every demonstration of delight. They then sung two other pieces, one to tho tu -e of "dusannah don't you cry," and the other that endearing compd. aiciun. "Farewell, Farewell is a lonely sound, where upon tho fair songstress, who remained standing all the time near the fuot-lighte, again applauded even ■“are heartily than before, and assured several genile- roen standing around that this was one of the most pleasing incidents that she had witnessed since her ar rival in this country. Miss Lind then asked tile children what she should fing for them, when the boys set up a shorn which reverboruted through the building, and. continued ap plauding, some of them crying out for “Home, Sweet ilumo," and others for the Bird Song." ‘‘Well then,' the replied, “as you have sung so sweetly for me, I will sing both, and satisfy all." She then sang both pieces, to our mind, infinitely more spiritedly and Iseliugly than ever before. Indeed the exhibition ot her powers as a vocalist on this occasion was geucr- oily observed by Ibe orchestra to have exceeded her 'Usual efforts. VVe have attended nil her concerts, pad can truly say that the scene of Saturday mom- irg Was worth the wholeofthem. Indeed,Miss Lind was so perfectly delighted thnt, for the A"* «««*, she Isolated one of her most imperative rules, in sing ingso much when a concert > nsued the same day. In Mdition to the abovepieces, she twice song to theooys p know that my Redeemer liveth," woich started Nrs in muuy n youthtul eye, with the “Flute Song, pud a sweet "Hungarian Melody." At the close ot die concert,’one of the larger hoys proposed three pairs for Jenny Lind, which were given three times per with an enthusiasm beyond description, which pae received with great pleasure, bo wing her ac - piowledgmenta. We have seldom witnessed a scene jut more genuine enjoyment, and Miss Lind oven ap peared more pleased than the children were. I Wages in Ireland. I We copy the following from the London 1 line* : I At tho petty -essions lately held at Kanturk, Ireland |u Irish farmer. Green by name, was summoned by P'is of tils laborers for the sum of one shilling and six- iisnce, which we might suppose, represented a day's purk. It appeared, however, that it was claimed ■ur three week’s work, done at the rate ot or e penny |cr diem during harvest time—lor eighteen days, Pgbteen ppncfi. There was no dispute about the fet of the labor having been performed, the farmer's l^uctance being grounded on the exorbitant ctaarac- W r ot the demand. Mr. Green declared that he Raould never have thought of engaging a starveling Pkrthe complainant Walsh ut that money, when lit? Rould get the best meu i u the country tor as little. Pp could bring a witness to prove that the wages Pally covenanted for were one half-penny per week; it P's purely a commercial question; be had made a P r gmn, as he averred, in accordance with the state i/the labor market in'that locality, taking nto coo peration the capacities of Walsh; he c onsidered P nt a bargain was a bargain, and ought to be Kept; n- P 1 ^. he tendered th-ee half pence as the amount V the legitima te claim. Astoundedtbv suchi an ot- P r i the magistrates demanded ot Walsh what h Pd obtained in the way of food from his employer. Phey received for answer as follows:-- . I “Whilst I was with him I was obliged to be up in P« morning about 4 o’clock, to let the cows out Pesleeping field, and remain herding thfin^ntiil th ■her men would come to their work, and B he obliged to worn with them all day, ana get pthiug tor my suport but a bit of dry Indian grue. JheY used to give milk to the pigs and calvos before ■y but would »not give me a drop. i>n- 6' theao circumstances, the magistrates '“Ti S r = for vaa payment ot a more exorbitant aum of S* penny per (lay, not, however, without renewed. Khection* on the part of Mr. Green, who stoutly mam- B‘ a rd the juitiee and the sacredneaa of bis bargain This conduct of tho Irish farmer affords a clue, if wc do not greatly mistake, to the horrible social con dition ot Ireland. Mr. Green, in starving hia labor er, and endeavoring to get off paying more than half pence a week, dues not appear to have thought he wns doing anything immoral orevn unusual. Hia code of morals, as Detween himself and Walsh, seems tohavebceu not dissimilar from that between far mer and laborer ordinarjly. At least no testimony was adduced to shew the contrary, nor was there any outbreak of public indignation against the mon ster as there would have been in, this country. Now there is nothing more true than that cruelty and op- ■preseion on the part of the rich leads to hatred on tho part of the poor. If men generally, in the South ot Ireland, are starved like Walsh, we do not Won der at the assassinations of farmers and landlords. Of course we do not approve of Buch a method of re taliation. We only speak of it as the inevitable con sequence of cruelty, constituted like human nature is. It the tiger is starved, he will bito ; audmen.in this respective, tigers too.
