THE MORNING NEWS. [Correspondence of the Daily Morning News.] NEW-YORK, Dec. 16, 1850. The nbolition fanatics are getting rabid as the ex- itement they have been creating, with reference i the Fugitive Slnve Law cools off, by the happy in- urnce of the friends of luw and order. Their latest lovement la the calling of a State Convention, to eheld at Syracuse, in the Western part of this tate, on the 7th, 8th and 9th of January ; and simi- irones it seems are to be called in other States.— ’his call is signed by Samuel T. May, Chas. B. edgwich, Chas. A. Wheaton Jr., A. Cobb and Jno. 'humas, eud the object of tho Convention is time :ated :—To consider the Infernal Bill enacted by the mericau Congress on 18th Sept., 1850, for the tecopture of Fugitives from Slavery, aud to take uch action thereon as Freemen should. [tend you the concluding paragraph of the call, y which you will judge of its spirit. Similar Conventions are to be held in other of th« rec States ; and, we trust before the end of the pre- eat s.seionof Congr ss, a message will be sent tiff- her from the entire North, that will admonish the pprpssors ol the South, aud their moreunprincipled bettors, that they have rooked up the lion—that tliey nuat recede from the daring encroachments they «vo made upon Northern sentiments and Northern bertiea—must annul that wicked Bill, or consent nt It must be at once a dead letter—or "Xpert to this American Union deluged in bloody t is pleasant to turn from this to a letter from r. Dr. Cox, published this morning, in which he aks sensibly aud. feelingly of the attempts of the mionists. The following sentiments will be read h great satisfaction : ly own estimate of the incalculable value of our ioual Union, increases with my years and oppor- lides of knowledge and reflection. It is always i, r to burn than to build, to demolish than to edify, l “a Goth or a savage might destroy a palace, who ■Id not constructahovel.” ButGoth or suvage were thets too mild and mercltul for the aeltish and juUive madman who could plot the dismember- at of this nation, or regard our magnificent and rious Union with any sentiments of indifference or lioority. I believe that the weliare of posterity, hope of ages, and the interests of man, temporal I eternal, alike and together, demand and pray, a Perpetua 1 to our arch of empire, of which the ssive stones have increaeed and multiplied, within memory of the living, from 13 to 31, the same ires in order reversed, with our beautilul. and ap- priate national motto, E Pluribus Unum, like the mtry itself, expansive and yet unchangeable, ready uxommodate all the otherStat.es which, by regu- accession from our territories, may yet come, logenoously and successively, into our confed- ey- 'h« Navigation of the North River may be said le virtually closed ; although a change has taken :ein the weather, which is now remarkably mild- in’t suppose, however, tt at boats wilt resume if trips. In some parts oi tbo river, the ice is u too to four inches thick. The Hudeon river road ceases to convey passengers beyond Pough- psie, on aud after to-day ; so that just when tbe Picture is about to assemble we are, to a certain eat, cut from at least speedy communication with capital. There seems to bo an auomely in this, litis strange that New York city has not before. been selected, as tho most appropriate place lor : body to assemble. The subject has been started may yrt be dene. be Forest case was called up on Saturday in Supreme Court, but for Borne reason or other her party seems desirous to proceed. 1 presume 1 delay is desirable, and in law, I believe that o ge dues not alsvuys apply that ’'delays are an ous"—many a villain has escaped his deserts, y bug off the day of trie) f om term to term, and » taking tho chance of some ttrcumstunce or sr removing .the witnesses. Friday next is v set down for the argument, be subject of "heap postage is causing some talk - and a meeting was held on Saturday last, fit the chauts Exchange at which one of our most influen- Merchants, ucted as President, aud it was numer- ■y attended by our down-town tradesmen. A 1 uf the kind occurred on Saturday; the suicide 18 young Englishman, whp arrived here a few *ths since, and vainly soli gilt for employment, money-was gone; every article that he could " was pledged, and driven to desperation by the •pect of utter destitution, he swallowed a sufli- *■ quantity of opium to cause death. I am glad to learn that the poor creatures who lost everything by the wreck of the Helena Woman, have' been relieved, and that money, clothes, and free pas sage by cars aud boats to their sevoral destinations have been given to them. New York can do any thing in this way, to any amount, and few if any -the wise . 1 sincerely believe that had as New York is, there is a great deal of good done in secret hero, as well 88 a good deal of evil. BY HENRY W. LONOFELLOW. * Saint Augustine ! well hast thou said, That of our vices we can framo A ladder, if we will but tread Beneath our leet each deed of shame 1 All common things—each day’s events, That with the hour begin and end; Our pleasures and our discontents Are rounds by which we may ascend. The low ilesire—the base d esign, Tilnt make another's virtuesless; The revel of the giddy wine, Aud all occasions of excess 1 The longing for ignoble things, The strife foe triumph more than truth, The hardening of the heart that brings Irreverence for the dreams of youth! All thoughts of ill—all evil deeds, That have their root in thoughts of ill, Whatever hinders or impedes The action of the nobler will I All these muBt first be trampled down Beneuthour feet, if we would gain •In the bright fields of Fair Renown The right of eminent domain 1 We have not wings—we cannot soar— But we have feet to scale and climb By slow degrees—by more and more— The cloudy summits of our time. The mighty pyramids of stone Thatwedge-like cleave the desert airs, When nearer seen, and better known, Are but gigantic flights oi stairs. „ The distant mountains, that uprear Their frowning foreheads to the skies Are crossed by pathways, that appear As we to higher levels rise. The heights by great men reached and kept, , Were not attained by sudden flight, But they, wh'le their companions slept, Were toiling upward in the light. Standing on what too long we bore With shoulders bent and downcast eyes, We may discern—unseen before— A path to higher destinies. Nor deem the irrevocable Past, As wholly wasted, wholly vain— If rising on its wrecks, at last, T" “iirni'f ing nobler we attain, SKY-LIGHT DAGUERUIAN ROOMS. riYUE citizens oi Savannah and vicinity are in- ■I formed that I have, at great expense, added n splendid Reception Room to my establishment, for tbo accommodation of my patrons, where those of a musical tasto can amuse themselves on a moat beau- tilul Piano Forte, purohaseil expressly for the use of my customers.
