Our criminal courts are now in session, and
iver was the calendar so heavy. No less than
gilt persons aro to be tried for murder or ut-

der to not see that Cuba will be subject to an

The London Morning Herald, of tho 12th inst.,
publishes the following: .
“Thera, is not any doubt that the United
States covet the possession of Cuba. Mr. Ban
croft ex-entroye und minister plenipotentiary of
the.United States, in this country, said, in Ills
funcrgl eulogy on President Jackson, that that
General, at the time when he bended his army
in Florida, was unxious to conquer Cuba. We

United States.
“ Lord Palmerston uud Lord Abordoon have

event will bo realised ill about twenty yonrs."
There is for Spain one single wuy to preservo

hundred millions of francs, Spain could only
give freedom to slaves by relying upon tho free

to be resolved in n convenient manner.

We are no friends to unjuBt invasions; but
here should be limits to the wrath or the ven-
eoncc of man. Tho recent wholesale butchery

TIicbo undistinguishing massacres in cold

loventments which pretend to legitimate au

c impulse of blind or sanguinary passion, but

Tragical Occurrence—A Son Mortally
Wounded by his Father.
On Sunday night, ubout 8j o’clock, a tragical
nnd unnatural deed was perpetrated near the
corner of Sycnmoro and Hunt sts., which in all
probability will cause the death of a worthy
young man, named Louis Houseman, a watch
man of the IXth Ward. The particulars, ns
near as we can learn them, are as follows ; Bar
nard Houseman, in a partial state of intoxica
tion, was creating a disturbance in the street,
when his son Lewis approached nnd told him
he was a watchman, and must perservo the
peace, begging him nt the same time for God’s
sake to be quiet. With an expression of rage,
the father in an instant drew a long knife, and
springing on his son, plunged it twice into him,
once in the left side and once in the abdomen,
inflicting ghastly wounds. The unfortunate
son. muttering an exclamation of agony, direct-
fell to the ground, when Bamaru turned and
