N0RTH1RN MAIL!
=r^7^,,idenc« or the morning New*.
New VonK, Sept. 10,11851.
\ B 1 expected, the City Father* are laying
, p | a ,,8 tu onjov a * good time’ on the arrival
", Kossuth and hi* companion* at this port. He
"i,j ,,j„ ojmmediato associate*,” are to be wel-
■Oiiicd by tile.Mayor and Council, and tho hospi-
°lities of tho City tendered to them. These they
cunnot do less than accept, of courso, aud a few
liore thousands of the publio money will go to
ll,ed the few Hungarians, and the multitude of
corporation loafers. Well, wo necd’nt complain
1 suppose, for the money is bound to go some-
nay and “its an ill-wind that blow* no one any
^The Governor has refused to commute the leu-
[cnco of death, in the case of Stookey, and he is
io be executed on tho 19th inst. He deserves
bis fate, for a more cold blooded murder was no
rcr perpetrated. Ho met his victim in the street
and told his companion to lick liim, which lie
jid, Stookey then drew a knife, and saying,
.ij n him. I’ll murder him," plunged it into
bia body, and tho man died. The letter of the
Governor is a model one of the kind and meets
with universal approval. The practice of car
rying concealed weapons, which is done to a
frightful and dangerous extent in this communi
ty, it is hoped will receive a check, from tho ex
ample about to be made ; for, but for this justice
the murder would not have been committed. Car
nal, tire murderer ia still hanging by the eyelids.
Wall’s sentence has been commuted to Imprison
ment for life. The trials of throo other murderers
arc set down for next wook, in the Oyer and
Terminer. Tho Hoboken rioters will, also be
tried nextwoekln New Jersoy.
It is expected that O'Sullivan and Schlessin-
ger, will Jr® called to trial to-morrow ; tho Court
opened yesterday, but the jury was not obtained
By-tho-bye we hear that tho steamer Pampero,
ia in your neighborhood, desirous of luring cap
tured, and I suppose the wish will be gratified,
ao that we hmy have Lewis for trial yet. I
doubt, if there will be much done in the business,
and the District Attorney tuny not urge on the
trials just now. They have a queer way of ad
ministering laws in this City, sometimes.
My attention bus recently keen directed to a
greatly increasing business in this City—that of
ready mado clothing, of which wc have most ex
tensive dealers—some employ neur a thousand
persons, and one house actually gives work to
3,500! What an army to feed. They moke on an
overage 1500 garments per year, of ail descrip
tions, besides u thousand of oil garments, alone
—these are worn by seamen, carmen, Scc. Most
of the businass is at the South, and it is said that
in St. Louis alone, they sell a million of dollnrB
worth annually.
There is no nows in tho City, all is very quiet,
with nothing to stir the calm surfaco of afiuirs.
The heat during the past two days line been
insufferable—a stifling heat, with scarcely a
breath to relieve the sufferings of the oppressed
mortality. It would seem, as though the heal
that was intended for some of the August days,
bad been compressed into the two just passed.
To-day wo are relieved. CHARLEMAC.
