Dear T.:—I told yon the other day thnt
there were not six houses (wortli calling houses)
in course of erection in Augusta. It h«» occur
red to me that perhaps this may lead. IO misap
prehension ; so allow mo In explain, "hut I
meant wus, there were few dtrclting houses be
ing built, such ns we are allowed to Imild in Sa
vannah, where you know, wn liuvo a fire ordi
nance prohibiting the erection ol wooden build
ings, within eertuin limits. Here, however, I
believe, they have no such ordinance, and the
consequence is, that u large majority of tho
houses arc of wood ; und owiug to the cheap
ness of the ground, (lurge lots lying vacant in
tho most dcsirublc quurtcrs) they arc Imilt with
only one story, and cover u huge superficial sur-
The Chairman of the Bourd of Health of

Since my report of tho 16th inst., no new cases,
either of Small Pox or Varioloid, havo occurred.
Tho two cnsca of Varioloid, mentioned in my
last report, are now well.
Free Soilism.—Tho N. Y. Timet, tho new
penny paper started by Mr. Raymond, don't
think there ia any treason in the Christiiina out
rage, or that the higher law touchers led to tho
murder, but tliut the nogroes acted from passion
and malice.

I3T The highest mountaiu peak in tho United
States East of the llocky Mountains, is tho
Bluck Mountain in Yuncy county, North Caro
lina, which is 6,476 feet high, exceeding in ele
vation the \71iite Mountains in New Hampshire
hitherto regarded ns the highost land in the
•United Slates.
GTA serious railroad accidcut occurred ut
Baltimore on Saturday, on the Baltimore and
-Ohio Railroad, near Cumberland, by which three
laborers were killed, and six others dangerously
injured.
te r It is in contoiuplotion to get up a gruiul
•complimentary dinner in New Yoik to Commo*
nlore Stevens, the owner of the yacht America.
Ami lit i«‘ lot me remark, tliut one ol the great-
CHt objection* te u residence in Saviinunli ia the
want of thin room, ho plentiful in Augusta# We
have but f>0 feet front uml 90 feet deep to build
upon; und by the time two bonnes are built, (for
ground is too expensive to devote it to one,) with
tho necessary offices, not u foot of ground is left
for ornamental purposes. In Augusta there is
but one street, where tliut is the ease,—Brand*
street,—and in only tho busiest part of that. In
ull the other streets, tho bouses arc built on
lots large enough to admit of spacious beds be
ing laid off* in front for flowers ; and also, to se
cure that object of envy to all house-keepers—
good lurge yards in the rear. Aside from the
accommodations for families, the construction of
residences, dte. I notice the erection of some
very handsome stores ; in one instance, n single
range of some eight or ten, just commenced.
They are to be, I understand, five or six stories
high
1 trust the Burke Bail Komi will be hastened
to its completion. The whole trade of a large
section of country has been taken from Savan
nah, by the want of some such mode of commit-
uicatioii with Augusta. For instance, look ut
the mails between the two places, as I pointed
them out the other do>\ Twenty years ago, it
wus carried through in four horse post conches
in 21 hours. What splendid progress wc have
made, when here in 1851, von cannot get your
letter until •!(*> hours niter it is limited, nml the
pusseugci who wishes to go from Savannah to Au
gusta, must first go to Charleston or to Atlanta,
or wait two or three mouths for a sufficiency of
wutor in the river, or subject himself to I I
hours riding from the 110 mile station on the Cen
tral Bail Bond to Augusta in a two horse mail
wagon.
Among the objects well worthy of notice in
Augusta, is the Free School. Some years ago,
this School was conducted, iii most Free Schools
are without that regard for the advancement of
the pupil which is generally given only when
the teacher receives his compensation directly
from the parent. Fortunately for the institution,
however, a gentleman hv the mime of Snowden,
was appointed to the charge of the School, and
in coiiHC,|uenoo of his judicious management, tho
number of his pupils increased to more than
double the number with which he commenced,
(jiadually the character of tho School became
changed. From a few carelessly clothed and ill
favored hoys, it became a large and respectable
body. Barents who lmd heretofore looked down
on such a thing us a Free School, withdrew their
hildrcu from more aristocratic circles, und were
glad to have them admitted to the care of tho
new toucher of the unwashed million. Tho
Aeudeniy was affected, and the Trustees, to stop
the drain from their classes, and to place their
institution in tho tide of success, determined to
allow the new favorite to teach under their roof.
They invited him to take charge of thoAcadcmy,
and enjoy nil the dignity of the new position and
the increase of profits consequent upon sncli
promotion. It must, however, have astonished
the worthy gt'iitlemuii who tendered to Mr.
Snowden this honor, when lie declined it.—
“ Wlmt,” said the benevolent teacher, “will be
come of my poor little friends here, who have not
the means—who urc too poor to follow me to iny
new station ? No, l uni their friend, and I have
made them mine, and if l am to he made richer by
muking them poorer, we will slay where wo
nre, uml all he poor and happy together !” und
with these words it was that the poor boy’s
teacher and friend peremptorily declined the in
tended promotion.
The weather is now of most delightful temper
ature, tho days being warm and pleasant, and the
nights cool enough to require the use of blan
kets. But the dust is intolcrahi \ Here, on the
hills, the beautiful Sand-Hills, no dust ever
rises, and water never makes it muddy. But ull
the pleusuut drives about Augusta, und especial
ly through the streets, are rendered next to im
passible from the clouds of dust, which urisefrom
the wheels of every vehicle. I am proud of
Savannuh, her institutions and her advantages,
and in the wuy of dust 1 claim for her, among
cities generally, pre-cmiueiue in dusts ; but
when the point is mooted, nml the claims of Au
gusta are asserted, 1 “hide my diminished head”
and yield tlicp aim. The soil being of clay, it is
powdered very line and usi ending from the
ground in minute particles, pen. (rates the small
est crevices, and leaves its stain wherever it lulls.
Such is the dust of Augusta; of which those
who visit the city, nmy now have the full enjoys
meat.
Talking about dust, uml about there being
plenty of it in Augusta, I hope you received my
remittunee last week.* I have called upon but
one individual who put me to the trouble of call
ing again, and he is the only one who could not
pay me at this time. They have ull received
uie with the gseatest kindness, paid me at once
and with many expressions of admiration of the
puper, wished us the. fullest sarcess. This was
very gratifying 1 assure you. and is not usual to
one. collecting money. K.
before us, of New York, and something in the
spirit of iealousy, we fear. New York is so fa
vored in tier position by Providence, that there
is no occasion for jealousy hero. \Vc prosper,
and are glad to see others prosper also. It
seems to us, however, that Virginia would act
inoro prudently if she devoted her energies, for
the present, nt least, more to the domestic policy
of the States than to foreign commerce. Her
great wealth lies in her agricultural and mineral
resources. She has thousands of acres of un
improved land, an unsurpassed water powor,
valuable fisheries, tho finest of wheat, corn, and
tobacco fields, and resources of country fur be
yond our own. The true development of all
these internal resources, by means of railroads
and canals, and the establishment of good
markets between the seaboard and country, will
give employment to all her people, and make
them independently rich.

We still persist, that tho opening of competi

Charleston will soon have with Eurodc, will give

Intm'iial Improvement* in Virginia.
Virginia is going abend jirusncrously, and we
are glad to see her people awoke to the import
ance of improvements ut home. As un impor-
tuut commerce ih springing up between tho Old
Domiuion and New York, und ua new linen of
communication arc bringiug the people uud
trade of the two States nearer together, wo con-
dense from a reliable report some interesting
statistics iu regard to that trade. Tho Chesupeake
ports arc the muiu reliance of the commerce of
Virginia. The James River und Kanawha Can
al, tho principal tributaries to that river trade,
contributed last year, us products of the interior,
a value of $6,123^865. These aveuuco at the same
time, took into the interior a value of $7,727,224.
Virginia, lust year, also exported 50,000, hogs
heads of tobaco, mostly to Europe. There was
manufactured in the Richmond Mills 1173,100
bushels of wheat, mostly sent to Rio. She al
so employed, in the direct foreign trndc, 30,000
tons of shipping. She has now completed 560
miles of rudroad uud 418 miles of canal, and
there ure iu course of construction 890 miles of
railroad and 220 miles of plunk road.
Thus there arc ueurly 2,000 miles of railroad
and caual constructed, or in progress of construc
tion. in Virginia. The appropriations for these
works are already mude, and the money has been
almost entirely raised ut home, without the
necessity of incurring a foreign debt. We have
recently shown how well Virginia bonds stand
in-our own and tho foreign murket, and tho high
character of the people who nre responsible lor
their redemption, give them a certain and perma
nent value. Much is said, iu a Virginia report
