these girls wore contraband; they were about to
afford -aid and comfort”—especially comfort—-to
the enemy; so they were lawful captives. Rather
a novel kind of prize money to the Jack Tars. And
It nuzzles us to imagine how the sailors and thu of
ficial* settled the question of the disposal of them.
Jack is proverbial for his gallantry and fondness
tor the fair sox ; and It is uut to be doubted that
they fult mutinous if their lovely -prizes were not
distributed according to the rules and regulations
In regard to ^rize money. -Three stilus full of Cir
cassian girls!”—five hundred of them, iiurh.-ius !
Whew!
Hk of Good Ciikkr.—Tt is pleasant to associate
with men who are always happy, never disconso
late, down-hearted, or “out of sorts. It Is strange
that ho many of the crab apple kind exists in socie
ty, cross, always In trouble, sorrowing, bitter, will
nut eujoy themselves or let their friends have a
free heart. Why Is it y Disappointments wlllc inic,
but the man ot true nerve and good discriiiiiiiNtii ii
rises above them : cool ami self-possessed, he never
fruts over the past, but with a hopeful and cheerful
face looks to thu future, and goes through tin-
world with crowns of joy upon his head. The cur
rent of life carries us along; like sea-w«ed torn
from a rook; we cannot control it, cannot stem the
tide, but may make a pluasuut journey, lamg life to
