8,.w yon figure draped In black,
The hood above her lace;
With down-cast eyes she swiftly goes
Through every crowded place.
The busy merchant stops aside;
The children cease to play;
And kindly eyes her steps pursue
I’pou her silent way.
She enters by a portal dltu,
Ascends a dreary stair, '
Ami crosses, with u gentle step,
The dormitory bare.
A range of narrow pallet-beds
Is close against the wall.
Ami forms of weak and wasted men
Are lying on them all.

Laudlug fri
olee Is bent
Ehe soothes the strong man in hls pain.
And rests hls weary bead;
And to the fevered, tossing limbs
Adjusts the narrow bed.
She watches all the weary night
Beside a lantern dim,
llalf-uiurmurlug to herself the while
The fragment of a hymn.
The gladsome notes of mornlng-blrds
The freshness of the ulr,
Tempt not her weary eyc-llds from
T'lielr sad and wulchlul care.
Although a fatal pestilence
Infect the heavy ulr,
Yet m ar the lips of fevered men
She breathes the parting prayer.
She does not shrink. Her simple faith,
More strong Ilian human love.
Sees, thro’ the open gates of death,
Her happiness above.
Another Fatal Steamboat Disaster.—Detroit,
October D.—The steamer Colliue burst her bollur on
tlio Lake yesterday, and twenty-three lives were
lout.
The Webster Estates.—It ought to reconcile men
to their insignificance to know how soon great men
arc disregarded. In the tlrst gush at the death of
Daniel Webiter, great were the monumental prom-
i.. s of Boston and tbo adjacent demesnes. .Mat*h-
field was to be forever sacred—the Franklin estate
in New Hampshire, so dear to Webster, kept in the
loudly—and au immense statue of bronze put up
in .State street. Now, Mnrshflwld is advertised to
let.” and recommended as very fit ** for a tavern.”
The Franklin estate Is advertised “ for sale," and
w- hear nothing ofthe statue. Fortunately, Web
iter erected his own monument before hls dentil,
and it is one ofthe few that are harder than brass.
[ New Bedford Mercury.
Oit-Door Exercise.—It is owing, mainly, to their
delight iu out-door exercise, that the elevated Clas
sen In England reach a patriarchal age, notwith
standing their habits or high living, or late hours,
of wine drinking, and many other health-destroy
ing agencies; the deaths of their generals, their
lords, their earls and their dukes, are chronicled
almost every week, at seventy, eighty, and ninety
years: It is because they will be on horseback, the
most elegant, rational, and accomplished of all
forms of r \! exercise. l*oth for sons and daughters.
But tho whoio credit of longevity to these classes,
must not l>e given to their love of field sports; it
must Ih* divided with tho other less characteristic
traits of an English nobleman—he will take the
wbrld easy; and could wo as a people, persuade
ourselves to do the same thing habitually, it would
add ten years to the average of human life,
