lenge, having formed no opinion.” Othors were
closely examined, and a number were set aside, “for
cause.” or challenged peremptorily. It
suspicion with some, that Mr. Wright w
ly accepted ; but we cannot suppose that the Dis
trict Attorney is blameable, further than that he
was so unfortunate as to bo deceived. It Isa strange
episode which will give additional famu to this
criminal trial; and. perhaps, an ouviuble fame to

oftho Improper organization of the Jury ; and the

ion, they have tho best protection of their rights
and liberties, and the surest guaranties for a faith
ful administration of the laws.

Boston, Oct. 7.—Tho Mayor and Aldermen of
Charlestown had « meeting last evening to Inspect
the returns of the late election. The opponents
of annexation have a majority lu the Hoard and,
by their opposition, prevented any action from be
ing taken, aud tho Hoard adjourned until Monday
ovoulug. A writ of mandamus has beeu obtained
from the Supreme Conrt, aud will l>e served to
day. when they will be compelled to certify to the
returns.

Ilk Scotland.
At n late banquet lu Glasgow, in Scotland, in
commomoratlon of the inauguration of the statue
of tho tjucuu, Mr. Buchanan was present as an in
vited guest, aud replied to n toast complimentary
to the United States lu tho following eloquent re
marks :
“ 1 cannot feel myself a stranger in a strange

friends, aud 1 am glmi that, by mere accident, 1
happened to be here on this occasion. Wo have
