The Adrian (Mich.) Expositor says a man named
Augustus Stuart Byron McDonald, was convlctod
in tho city of an attempt to murder an engineer,
by placing obstructions upon the.Miehigau South
ern Railroad. Duriug the progress of the history
-of the case, it has been ascertained that a giant
plot for wholosale murder and robbery was plauued,
mad It Is supposed tliat the names of the men on-
gaged In it are not known.

Lord Byron, and that his tAother’s name was Mary

that at Detroit lost winter certain proposition:
were made to him to engage in tho buaiuess of
throa lug trains from the track fbr the purpose of
rubhlug the nulls and express.
The locomotive was thrown from the trAok near
Adrian, in March last, and tho print of a peculiar
boot was found. McDonald pretended to make
disclosures to the officer* of the railroad as to tho
exULeuoa of the gang, and it Is supposed he Intend
ed to get hay from the company, aud at tho same
time lu fru*t make no exposure of onj avail. Fi*
nally the government agent arrested McDonald,
and got hold of his boote, which answered to the
tracks, and McDonald was thrown into prison.
Deputy sheriff Beck, of Milwaukee, was thrown
into the same cell, as express robber, and sweat it
out about four weeks, spending one-half his time
with McDonald, aud the other half, as he pretended,
in his dungeon. Bock did this to get some coufos-
slou out of McDonald. aud finally succeeded lu
gaiuiug enough to-convict him.
The gang apparently extends to New York, in
fact an accomplice is supposed to be In the New
York iK>st office, from whom It could be known when
valuable letters wont in the mail. Byron, alias Mc
Donald, has—as Is supposed—giveu the names of
his con federates)' he, however, has been sentenced
to imprisonment for life.

Much of the poetry that oomes Into our hands 1*

elegant penmanship, and i* accompanied with such
modest notes from virgin, authors, that wo are at
our wits’'end to know what to do with it. llow
can we decline publishing what has been prepared
with so much pains and is proffered with such deli
cate consideration. In order to recover our Judg
ment sufficiently to deetdo upon tho quires of ele

es will be more sparing of their favorsfor at least
two months to come. And for the guidanco of those
who meditate such favors for us In tho fhture,wo
. l*eg leave to submit the following hints:
1, Do not take & psalm tune and make a jingle of
- words to match it. Oreetivlllo and Coronation aro
■ capital tunes, but they do not always Inspire good
•poetry.
% Do not take a rhyming dictionary and select
row of words, and then prefix syllables to make out
the requisite number of feet. Poetry constructed
upon that principle usually requires to be read
^backwards.
3. Do not take a foot rale and measure off inflat
od prose into blank verse. This is apt to confuse
the reader as to the proper use of capitals aud tin
pauses cf the sentence.
4. Do not exhaust tho adjectives and interjection!
of the English language.
6. Nerersend us anything “upon the recommen
dation of judicious frleuds, who desire to see it in
print.
tt. After composing, lay aside your piece until the
Intoxication of the first inspiration ha* subsided.—
Keep it a month and then road it over.

^vhleh American diplomacy proposes to make in re

agreement on more points than ouo with the Gov

diplomatic circles will give it special attention. The
American Ministers evidently apprehend that
the oxpauaioil of their frontiers will meet a formi
