lugs nook news from home through your columns,
may I bog you to give them this notice.

As 1 stand in the relation to many of you as
family physician, and to all of you ns friend and
neighbor, 1 Advise that uone^f you will return
until informed by friends at home of a frost ami
settled cool weather. I regret to inform you that
we have beeu doeply afflicted ; mauy familiar faces
gone, and liew cases of the dread disease have de
manded my attention to-day. Tho poor of our
town have beeu sorebr visited, but the slender re
sources of our City Council have been strengthen
ed by the llborality of hvrcltizuu* at home, nnd by
yourselves through me ms requested ; and while
We hnvu had sickuess and death, we have known
no want.
Our Savannah friends will not think hardly of
our silence in th^ir distress when they know of
our own—-as charity begins nt home’—but 1 well
know that no community has fult a deeper inter
est than our own in the sorrows that have encom

Nearly the wboloof the cargoes of schr. Atballu
and brig Maxwell, have been saved. About two-
thirds of the Athnlia’s, being damagod, has been
sold, and brought $13,000. Her materials $1000
more. Both vessels have beeu sold as they lie ou
the rocks—the brig for $11, and the schr. for $85.
The hull of a brig, loaded with mahogauy, vug-
posed to be a British vessel, was found on tho quick
sands, forty miles west of this (tort. Shu had U*<
burnt down to the water. Fivo anchors nnd two
chains were takou from her.
Schr. J. 11. Bleeker, of aud for Now-York, fro
Laguna, with logwood, arrived here iu distress.—
lie* crow were attacked with Chagres fever. She
sprung a leak, and half her cargo had to bo thrown
overboard before reaching thls^ort. She has been
discharged and repaired,aud will sail for New-York
iu a few days.
Brig Detroit, (him Nuevitas, for New-York, put
in h«reku|dUtross, having, In a heavy sea, rolled
away her foremost and main-topmast. She will be
repaired immediately, and proceed uu her voyage.

The steamship Louiidaua, Captalu Talbot, arrived
on the llthinst., from ludiauola aud Galveston.
By this arrival we have Houston papers to th>
7th instsut, aud Galvestou papors to the 8th.
We regrot to purccive that the yellow fever wu»
still prevailing at Ualvustou. Thp abatement in
tho pestllenoe which we noticed on the arrival of
the sUtumshlp Fashion, ap|mars to have been only
tumnorary. For several days there was u material
decline lu the number of deaths. One or two days
there were none. On the night of the 3d there was
a gouuluw norther, the herald of the approach of
cold weather. Uu the 7th, as we learui from tho

Mr. Charles Merliu, an old resident of Houston,
and formerly keeper of the Alabama House, in
that city, was found dead In his bed

The Texas Ranger, of the.&th instant reports that
the Brazos river is navigable.
A case of yellow fever had oocurred on the schoon
or Alamo, lyiug in tho Brazos, and loaded witli
goods for Columbia and Brazoria. The citizens would
hot permit her to laud at either place.
Thepecau crop on the Brazos river is represented
to be very abundant this seasou.
TheHlrasos Planter has later accounts from Mata
gorda than we received. The Plnuter nays:

down, and the goods have beeu greatly damaged.
There were five persons killed by the falling of the
houitss—two Americans and three Germans but w.
liavo been unable to learn their names. Dr. Perry’i.
wife had bur arm broken. The houst of Colouvl
Lewis, on the Peninsula, opposite Matagorda, was
blawu down And all the horses killed. From Csuey
we learn that the purgerie® belonging to the sugar
house of Col. Jones aud Mr. Gibson, and the walls of
Colonel Warren’s sugar boose, were blown down.—
Col. Hawkins's dwelling house was Llown down, and
the thigh of one of bis negroes broken. A new
wchooner which he had just brought out to take o(I
his crop was wrecked. ”

The residence of Mr. Armstrong, In Lavnca, was

cial sayn:
It struck the top of the house, passed down
through thereof and struck a bed, which It tore
all to pieces and drove ono of ilia posts Into the
ground, besides doing a good deal of damage. Mr
and Mrs. Armstrong were out In the yard at the
momeut and did not receive any Injury.
Tho fall emigration to Texas has commenced
with great force. Every steamship carries thither
a number of persons who Intend to settle, and
inauny are wending their way hy.land.

Whether the number and capacity of tbo life-boats
ou board the Arctic were adequate to the rescue or
all the pa Wenger*, ho did not kuow. There were six
of them in all, nnd thirty-two were crowded Into
ttie one in which lie was saved. At bast one of the
other boats bad a compass—an Instrument of which
his own boat was destitute aud it might thereby
have steered safely to Cape Rare, forty miles oir, In
the absence of nstorm nt the time. Mr. Burns and
his follow-!nr rivers suffered greatly from exposure
to cold nnd wet. Their feet were for nearly forty-
eight hours soaked in water, and we have heard
that one poor fellow was. It Is feared, permanently

of death In one family. The sympathies of the whole
community are deeply aroused towards these afflict
ed families, as well as toward all who have lost ida
tives and friends by tills terrible disaster. <
