Th« Collixs 8txam Lixx.—The wreck of the
American steamship Arctic leaves the line only
three at earners, and greatly increases their service
and the labors of the aud craws, in order
to keep up steadily tho for nightly trips, under the
mail contract with the government.
When the British army iu the East left
Varna, a few weeks ago, for the Russian province of
the Crimea, no horses, excepting those of the field
officers were taken on hoard the transports,
the other horsoe, to the number of 5000, were cast
loose, to seek their fortunes as best they could —
Horses which three mouths before eojt 60 aud 00

$1000, could not find purchasers at $4. Enormous
quantities of baggage, the private property of

Dorian says that If tho officers and men had re

cutting off of the hurricane deck, a raft could have
been formed capable of carrying tho whole of them.

To the wholesale desertion of tho officers and

Capt. liUce, ho says, behaved nobly throughout,

the sleep Is disturbed, tlie appetite feeble, the mind
lethargic, (lie nerves unnaturally snusatlve, and tlie

Now we know from a muss of testimony greater
than was ever before accumulated in favor of one
