which Is ■'.".Id to have lx*ou lately reded to our Gov
ernment by St. Domingo:
“Tho Bay of Batnanit Ilea In the northeastern eor-
neroftbo Island of St. Domingo. Its entrance,
which looks out upon tho Atlantic, is some twonty-
four inllua wide, and Jts waters extend fifty miles
Inland. In Its centre, at some fifloun miles from
’ape Raphael, which makes tho entrance ou the
South, and twelve miles from CnpcSamnua, on the
North, are two Islands, called the Grand Cluvnuta
dos Keys, each something like a mile long, which
effectually break the force of thenxtoriml|wladsanJ
waves, ami render tho anchorage within ns secure
as It Is convenient. Indued, it Is admitted that
them are few If any bettor or more capacious har
bors lu the world. On tho north of the bay stretches
tho peninsula of ftinana, which, though rather low
and marshy at Its connection with the main body of
the Island, is a hilly and Irregular uitenslou of
laud, shaped something like a boot, and varying In
width from four to ten miles. The port of Santana,
which Is said to ho ceded to tho United States, Is
formed by a cove some half a mile wide, aud a lit
tle longer, which puts up from the Bay iuto the
peninsula. How deep tho water is, we have no
means oi knowing, sluoono accurate survey of tho
Hay was ever made ; hut thoro is no doubt that the
frigate Columbus, at her receut visit, exam.nod the
soundings, and found them suincieut for every pur
pose, or otherwise some other poiut would have
been trotted for. Wo believe there are a few house
there, occupied by wood'-cutters, but on this
Load we have no distinct Information ; at any rate,
the number of inhabitants must he very small.—
The region is remote, from the settled portions of
Dominica being about 200 inilos by sea, the only
convenient mode of getting there from St. Domi:
go City.”
Fatal At pair.—Yesterday afternoon, nlnmt four
o’clock, ftvo soameu, deserters from different ships
and boarders with n crimp uaiued Burko, iu Cham-
pialu street, proceeded lu a boat to a ship named
Rhea Sylvia, lying off the Cul-de-Sac, for the pur
pose of enticing some of the crew to desert; the
mate ordered them to leave tho ship, when au al
tercation ensued, aud the mate was obliged to use
violence to get them clear of the ship. The captain
hearing the noise, came on deck with his gun, when
after leaving the ship, they begau to use provok
ing and threatening language. The captain being
enraged, raised his piece aud firud, when two of the
men in the boat fell dead ; one being Shot through
the tuiuplu, tho other in the breast. The captain
came immediately to the police station, aud gave
himself up, *ith overy foeliug of sorrow for what
had occurred.
This, though au uuforlunate affair, Is scarcely
to be wondered at, as desortlou from ships in Que
bec Is practiced to a large extent, and masters are
put to extraordinary expense and trouble by being
dally am! nightly robbed of their crews by crimps
about town. One of the deceased is named Robert
Chare, a deserter from the ship Marmion ; tho other
Is only known by the unine of Sallmakor; not
knowu what ship he belonged to,
Tho mimes of the other three inen who woro in
the boat when the captain fired, are:—
Joau Majeiin, a Portuguese, a deserter from the
“ Marmion, ” now in port jGeorge Weste, Irish, a.
deserter from the seme ship: William Jones. Eug
litb, a deserter from the “ Belona, ” now iu Mou-

an Knglisbmau ; tho other, known by the namo of
Salluiakur a Scotchman.—Quebec Chronicle, Oct. 10.
SU0CRA8FUL Boring FOR Coal.—For several months
past, a Mr. Kesterman has boeu boring for coal at
Evansville, Indiana, being fully satisfied by geolo
gical Investigations thatthotnwn must He upon an
tumieUKu bed of that mineral. Ho has, at length,
been successful in reachlug a large velu of coal,
which ho says, is so satisfactory in its character,
that he is about to cominuucc sinking a shaft,
which will penetrate tho voln about the first of l)o-
ceinlier. lu two or threo years he expects to bo
ablo to dig and deliver coal right in the heart of
the town, at the rate of twenty thousand bushels a
day, if desired. Previous to undertaking his expe
riments, ho obtained from thu city government the
right to run a tuunel, witli a railroad track, under
any of thu streets, at the depth of two hundred and
fifty feet below the surface, promising by this
means to deliver coal iu the city at the same price
at which it can be sold at tho shaft.—Mobile Newt.
