and consisted of white and greon satin, orna

[racefully behind the ears in a quantity of

diamonds. The robe of the Princess Matilda

There were present ladies wearing splendid
robes of various colored silks and satins, em
broidered in gold, relieved by bouquets of
flowers: others with four Pompadour flounces
the Cleopatra robo, cn gros de Tours, with
.figured flounces in silk and gold. We no-

of roso leaves of every shade of green, sur
rounded by a wide blonde, which was gath

of the eluater, which is thus half coTerod;
this was placed quite at tho back of the head.
Another bunch of leaves, smaller and flatter

and two long branches came from under the
leaves, and passing between tho double ban-

During the past week about 40,000
bales of cotton wero sold in the New York
market, being the heaviest weric's sale here

Estimating each bale at $45, the value of the

The Assay Office, at New York, has

Lakd Warrants.—A Washington tetter
says:—Though immigration.into this country
has been much diminished of lute, and is
likely to be much less considerable than
formerly, owing to the operation of various
causes, yet it is fouud that the demand for
public lands for the purposes of actual settle*
ment and cultivation is unusually active. As
an evidence of this, it may be mentioned that
the land warrants issued under the bounty
land act of the late session, are in great
demand, at fair prices. Tho market price of
these warrants, ih this city, is quoted in the
Sun of Thursday, at one dollar and eight
cents au acre. But the present rate is better
than that) and established purchasers are
offering a dollar and ten, aud cannot fiud an
adequate supply even at thut rate.

she soon after sprung alcuk, and the Captain,
thinking it unsafe to proceed, put his vessel

Turkish Festival*
Wo make the follvclug extract from s recent let
ter lu the Baltimore Sun, dated
CojrsTAjmNorLr, April 9,1866.
To the believers lu IslamUm Friday lost was a
memontblo day, aa it wai then that the Bureh
Euiyny aud his band started upon their pilgrim
age to Mecca and Medina. Perhaps there is no
tenet more strictly enjoined upon hla disciples by
the Prophet than the ne*.jesitj of visit!ug at one
period during their lives the holy Koaben of
Mecca. Tho Koran exprosiy declares that "he
who fails to perform the pilgrimage may die a
Jew or a Cbrfitian or whatever ho pleases.’’ The
day of doparturo is the twolfth of the morn Ked-
jeb, five months preceding the festival of the
Oourban Boy ran. Tho present o»o was nil
the most fastidious could hare desired. The
soft showors of the previous night had cooled the
atmosphere and laid tho dust, whilst a doll clous
brooro stole gently down tho Bosphorus. Taking
n cnlquo at GulUta, I crossed over to tho Top
Knpoiisl, and entered with the vast throng that
was pourtug into the green and shaded gardens of
the tidragllo, to witness the ceremony. Arriving
some time before tho Sultan, who is always pre
sent on such occasions, I leisurely strolled about
uu'l examined the singular preparations that had
been made, and the queer lookldg people that had
boon collected*
Within a wallud enclosure, an imperial tent had
boeu erected for the aocommodatlon of the Sultan.
Tho avenues through which the processlou was to
pass wore crowded with asrac-tloy a group as could
d nowhere bo found. Every huo aud nation, from
tho folr Circassian of the Caucasus to tho jet black
Nubian, were to be seen, as well os ovory descrip
tiou »*r costume, from the bright aud flowery robes
of the Persian to the sombre and closely’fitting
dress of the Frank. The mules and horses dostlned
to bear away the presents, with their gaudy trap-
' ^s, wore statiouod along the road, in the care
aelr Arabiau soljzes. About twelve the guns
upon the bastion of the Ser.gllo pealed forth their
hoarse announcement of the Sultan’s approach, to
wliioU the vessels of war, gaily decked with flags,
immediately replied. All that wore able flocked
down to see him land from his large gilded caique
of state. After receiving the homage of bis sub
jects he slowly proceeded to one of tho Imperial
Kiosks which overlook the harbor, to rest himseii
Monument to Col. Bliss.—A monument
has recently been erected at New Orleans to
the memory of tho late Colonel W. W. S.
Bliss, of the United States army. In giving
a description of this beautiful work of art, the
New Orleans Delta says:
“It is not for us to narrate the history of W.
W. 8. Bliss—the refined gentleman, the
finished scholar and the intrepid solaicr—
whose untimely death is here recorded, and
over whoso early grave we now may pause to
weep. It is for us to illustrate our column
with an engraving of this monument, and to
describe its design and structure, that his
Alma Jlater at West Point may know that
his memory is cherished, that his brilliant ser
vices will ever remain aa ‘household words
amongst us here; and that his example shall
ever be worthy of her best son’s emulation
eveywhere.”
The mouument is built of Italian marble
nearly 19 feet high, aud stands upon a granite
base 6 feet square. Upon this superstruc
ture is erected tho pedestal; the panels beau
tifully wrought m appropriate emblems;
within these is migrated a brief but compre
hensive history of the man, expressive of his
steadfast purpose through life, and evidence
the success wnibli atteueded his noble efforts.
Surmounting the pedestal is a square block
of marble, tho names of the several battle
fields upon which he was distinguished en
graved upon its sides. Upon this block is
erected u brokon shaft, supported by an
American eagle; tho American Bag covers the
top which suspends a wreath and sword.

Tiik Canal Troubles in Indiana.—The
canal war in Indiana is approaching a crisis.
The Cincinnati Commercial states thut on
Thursday last, Gov. Wright issued an execu
tive proclamation to the jpeople of Indiana,
setting forth the outrages done on the Wabash
and Erie canal, in Clay county , by a combina
tion knowu as the “Black Boys," from the
fact that they black their faces when pro
ceeding to acts of mob violonce. After enu
merating the several depredations committed
during the pastyeur, it announces that the
Governor is fimly resolved to bring the whole
military force or the .State, if. necessary, to
put down these lawless proceedings, and to
secure the quiet reigu of the laws. The mili
tary force that is detailed to act with the
sheriff, is under tho command of General
Dodd.
The Indianapolis Journal says, that Gov.
Wright in a private letter of instructions to
General Dodd, orders that if he finds the
courts of Clay county determined to uid the
rioters, or unwilling to act against them, the
fact must be reported to the Executive, aud
he will declare Clay county in a state of in•
eurrcction—for the* time being, annihilate its
civil existence, und extend tho jurisdiction of
the courts of neighboring counties over it
Thu Journal ados: There is very serious
danger that the citizens of the neighborhood
injured by these canal outrages, will bo ex
cited by a renewal of them to such a degree
as te take the law into their own hauds, und
punish mob outrages by mob vengeance, as
there ure enough meu interested in the pre
servation of the canal to crush the whole nest
of Clay county outlaws at once.

jsgr* The coal mines of Chili are now being
very profitably worked by a wealthy Chilian
Senator, named Cousino, whose income is
$600,000 per annum, and an enterprising
Englishman named Garland. The operatives
employed in the mining and preparation of
the coal are foreigners, During the month
of February last, 15,000 tons of coal were ex
ported fuom Coronol and Lota, two conti
guous ports in the Bav of Aranco, South of
Concepcion, the rate* being $5.50 per ton.
The BriUsh mail steamers have been supplied
with Chilian coal at Lota, and the only objec

rates gas too fust. The chief mine at Lota
is 100 feet below the surface, aud consists of
a vein of soft coal four feet thick, inclined but
slightly to tho horizon, and extending through
out the whole of the surroundiug country,

less than three feet in thickness, and of ex

a richly embroidered divan, tho Sheiks, Ulemas,

strain tho praises of tho Prophet and Padisha.—
Most of them wore certainly venerable looking
