Ho.mk Infirmary fob NrORoes.—A pros

of Negroes has been issued by Doctors
Smith, Steele and LeHardy. of this city.
The importance nnd utility of such an es

ceive skilful medlpnl treatment nnd nursing,
must be apparent to every one, and we
cannot doubt that the proprietors ol the
Infirmary will receive the approbation and
liberal support of our public.

of Colonel, have nominated Mr. A. R

votes will deposite them for this gentle

perfectly organized.

they have performed their duty, and ask of

We spent an hour very ploasantly as
well an profitably on Saturday afternoon
last, in looking through the beautiful cabi
net of natural curiosities and art, recently
opened by Mr. M. Deseene on Broughton

. eating collection of tho same extent, and
we consicfor that Mr. D., who has purchas
ed the collection of tho Savannah Medical
College, to which ho has made extensive
and valuable additions, is entitled to much
credit for his public spirit, und to the liberal

Desertion of Saratoua and Newport
—It appears, says the Richmond Despatch
that the pleasure-going crowds of the great
metropolis, arc about to desert Saratoga
and Newport. Some of the reasons are
given in a New York paper. The hotels,
itaays, are badlv built wooden shanties;
meals are served after the fashion that an
imals are served in a country mt lingerie ;
per diem (equals that of a first class ho
tel; bed rooms unfit for respectable dogs ;
leaders of society either pnrvenues, snobs,
or stork jobbing forgers, c la Huntington ;
the men pass their time with billiards,
brandy and secure—the women in dressing,
flirting, scandalizing tbeir dear friends,
&.C., &c.
This is the account given by a New
York journal, of the stats of itsown water
ing places. Consequently, some of the
best customers of Saratoga and Newport
will go there no more. Thousands will
join in the summer immigration to Europe
nnd others seek quint places in the moun
tains, nnd by the sea side.
New Orleans Races.—At the regular
meeting over he Metaire Course, New
Orleans, last week, as we iearri fibm the
Picayune, Mobile and Savannah were the
contestants for the purse of $150, two mile
heats ; the entries being J. A. Chambers’s
k Savannah mare, Grace IFalion, and Wm.
Cornel's Mobile mare, Queen. The Pica
yune says a very large portion of the spec-
tators were “knowing ones” in earnest, on
ibis particular occasion, and it was some
what amuaimj to hear the speculative re-
marks of the real “outsiders,” as to ihe re
sult. The speed of the Georgia inure had
been fully tested, however, and equally
well known was the fact that eho is alw ays
in trotting parlance, strictly “honest.” A
full description of the two heats would
hardly prove interesting, alter we hod inti
mated that the event cast its Shadow very
distinctly before it. Grace Walton won
the race in two straight heals, nnd iha
Georgians present picked up a few dollars
towards paying expenses. We annex a

to live in, the residences oil having u sub
stantial, comfortable appearance, nnd be
ing surrounded with gardens well laid out
and neatly kopt. Among the residences,
niv fancy was particularly struck with
those of Mr. Geo. P. Bcrur*, and Mr.
Doneoan. There is another owned by a
Mr. Calhoun, which ocettpies an entire
square, and is qtfclosed with a high brick
wall. From the outside, these grounds ap
peared to be filled with u great variety of
beautiful trees and shrubbery, but there is
no means of obtaining a glimpse nt the
interior. The enclosure has an air of aris
tocratic exclusiveness not ut nil to mv
taste. We passed tlie “ Bnscom Female
Institute,” and the “ Female Seminary.”
both neat and convenient buildings. I was
obliged to decline nn invitation to visit tho
former, as having been “ roughing it” for
a week, iny wnrdrobo was iivno condition
to appear before the young Indies. How
ever, I did not gain much, for in tho after
noon, walking" out alone towards the
cemetery, I met tho whole of them.—
They regarded me so attentively that I
should have bofan to flatter myself upon
my good looks, hod it not been for the
painful conciousness that it was my some
what outre nppenrnnce and slow traveling
that arrested their attention.
The cemetery is well laid out, although
now overgrown with grass ond rather ne
glected. Thero are n large number of
quite pretty innrble monuments, tnnny of
which arc disfigured by the abominable
want of taste and accuracy nppnrent in
their lettering Wotds mis-spelled, letters
out of all proportion, an absence of punc
tuation, and n general wont of taste, are
some of the faults too commonly prevalent
in country cemeteries. One large nnd
striking monument, besides the usual in
scriptions on tho bosc, had the fallowing
rather unique announcement near tho top
of a toll colunm :—
MRRIDIAN. Richard W. Ander
son Caused this monument to be erected in
memory of deceased relations, and to per
petuate the Huntsville meridian.”
About one fourth of the cemetery has
not yet been laid off into lots, and this
portion was Inst year planted with corn.—
It has not this year been plowed, so I can
not tell what disposition will be made of it
for the present season.
The greatest curiosity is the large spring
hlc.h pours out a volume of water from
under a rocky bluff very near the Court
House. The water gushes out with suf
ficient force to turn a large wheel, which
forces wuter up lo a reservoir on a hill
juat out of town, from whence it is dis
tributed in pipes The stream, alter leav
ing the wheel, forms a canal to the Ten
nessee river, some ten miles distant, on
whioh flat-boats loaded with cotton and
other production were floated down before
the completion of the railroad. The water
is pure nnd clear, affording nn abundant
supply nt a .small exponse. Huntsville
thus has her water works, gas works,
Macadamized streets, nnd nil the conve
niences of nn inland city. The grndo of
tlie streets is such that the water runs off,
leaving them clean nnd dry, free from mud
nnd dust, and aiding in making the city
one of the most delightful spots in the
interior for a residence. Our cotemporary
of the Memphis Eagle <$• Enquirer, who
recently visited Huntsville, is loud in his
praises of its beauty and advantages. He
says that Gen. Haskell, on beholding the
bt au-tiful flower gardens of Huntsville, said
that the breezes lingered among them, re*
luctant lo leave their delightful perfume
nnd that when he died uqd started to
Heaven, die hoped he would be permit
ted to go by way of Huntsville, ond linger
thero for a while to recall the glorious
memories attending his visit there.
Huntsville has been visited by two or
three fires, which destroyed some promi
nent buildings, but her citizens arc now
actively enguged in renuiring the ravages of
fire and time, nnd in erecting new buildings
to meet tho wants of this apparently thriv
ing city. The railroad company are w ork-
ing on nn engine house and shop for their
use, the house to have places for twelve
locomotives, and the shop to be of ample
capacity for tho work deeded. A flour
mill, plnining milt, and sash factory nre
also rapidly progressing, which will give
employment to a number of hands. A
lino large hotel has been commenced on
tho site of one which was burned some
time since, and • ''lock of stores is under
way on another " ,nt lot. Both the Epis
copal and Presbyterian churches are about
to build larger and finer houses of worship,
and a number of dwellings are contracted
for. Instalments to a college fund are
being called in with a view of erecring a
suitable bui!ding*on a commanding situa
tion about three quarters of a mile from
town. All these things show that Hunts
ville, instead of being injured by the rail
road, as was feared, is progressing with
renewed life nnd vigor. But I cannot
mention one half the beauties of Hunts
ville. Her noble Court House, fine public
square, spacious stores, elegant dwellinas,
and above all the magnificent scenery in
tho vacinity, impress upon the mind a
picture, which once seen, will always be
remembered with pleasure.
I took my quarters at the Railroad Ho
tel, where the fare, besides being good of
itself, was rendered doubly grateful from
an .unpleasant reminiscence of our dinner
among;the Corinth-ians. Leaving Hunts
ville about 9 o’clock, we arrived at Steven
son at 12, arid took the train for this city,
where wo arrived ot 10 o’clock this morn
ing, having spent nearly 10 hours in com
ing 115 miles from Stevenson. However,
although slow, it was sure, and the car in
which 1 rode was the most comfortable for
night (ravelling which I have found in my
journey tbits far. It was built at Nash
ville, was easy running, and had a wider
seat than is common in'this section.—
But I have not yet found any that ap
proaches a car in which I last summer
traveled on the Central Railroad, although
I got along very well with this one, steep
ing well nil night.
This city is founded upon a rock, and a
Atlantic city that lifty-two hours ordinary
running of the cars is nil that is required
to go from one to the other. Tho News
attributes this remnrkable success to the
public spirit nnd enterprise of Georgia;
whether it be so or not, we nre fully con
vinced that South Carolina has no claim in
the matter.
We said tho feat recorded by us owed
“its accomplishment mainly to Georgia
enterprise,” by which we meant that the
Railroads, through the territory of Georgia.
—the Centra! Road, the Macon and-West
ern Road, the State Rond, nnd tho Georgia
Road—by which the seaboard cities, Sav
annah and Charleston, nre opened to the
trade of Tennessee, were built by tho peo
ple of Georgia. These Ronds, giving two
Atlantic outlets to the great West, com
prise considcratdy more than two-thirds of
the Railroad construction between the At
lantic and tho Mississippi. Are we not
justifiable, then, in claiming for Gccrgiuen-
terprise an important part in the achieve
ment of the great work to celebrato
the accomplishment ol which, the Into
jubilee was held in Memphis?

Sdt" Since the lost arrival from Europe
we nre startled with the intelligence that
England nnd France are all in commotion
because the United States have taken the
enormous liberty to decline participating in
the pending war with China! Lord Pal
merston’s organ, the London Post, says
that “this policy” (that of not going to
war with China to gratify England) “is to-
tnlly unworthy of a great and enlightened
nation.” And even the London Chronicle,
which is opposed to the ministry, considers
it an insult that we do not “co-operate”
with them.— Washington Union.
When England nnd France went to war
with Russia, to establish tho balance of
power in Europe, the English press thought
it very strange that their American cousins
did not at least sympathise with the Allies.
Now* they would have us aid them to es
tablish P>ritish supremacy in China. But
it is time that John Bull should have learn
ed that Brother Jonathan is not to be used
ns a cat’s paw to secure his chestnuts.—
When the people of tho United States go
into a war they go at it in earnest, ond
always on their own account, in vindication
of their own rights and interests.
The New Granadn Canal Company
is suffering new’ misfortunes. Mr. D. G.
Gilleti, who wa9 sent to Carthngenn wiih
money, they say, to resume dredging ihe
canal, lias returned, bringing the report
that the Corthageninn government has
seized $5,000 of their funds deposited with
a pledge for the fulfilment of tho con
tract, and now refuse to let the work go on
until a now contract ^s effected. The
Company suy they s^l#uejfor damages.
Contracts for Navy Supplies.—The
contracts for subsistence for tho nnvy re
cently 1 made, amount to some $800.000.—
The,contracts for the supply of clothing
nmountiiig in tho aggregate to $400,000
were nil with the exception of one (forenrt-
vass (J.qck trowsers, sheeting, duck, nnd
black silk handkerchiefs) given to Mas
sachusetts manufacturers.
The prices nt which these important con-
iract8 were taken are said among the man
ufacturers of New England to prove thnt
they £an sell under the new tariff at
much less rates than heretofore.
Dr. Beale’s Panorama of Dr. Kane’s
Arctic Explorations.—This celebrated
Panorama, is. we understand, to be exhibit
ed at St. Andrew’s Hall, in this city, to
night :
From the following notice taken from the
St. Louis Domocrat, our readers may form
an opinion of its claims upon their patron
ago :
Dr. Beale's Arctic Regions.—This cele-
brated Panorama close* to-night, alter the
most brilliant scenes of triumph evei
achieved by any work oi nrt in this city
Its success is as eminently deserved, as it
is a gratifying proof of the cordial appre
ciation which has welcomed it wherever
exhibited. All words of eulogy or extrava
gancc apnrt, the simple truth ia, thnt its
appearance in the world of art was hailed
with enthusiasm ns spontaneous as were
the regrets of the nation heartfelt when it
was apprehended that Dr. Kane wnssolified
in ice or embalmed amid the eternal glories
encircling the North Pole. The public
stamp ol npprovul in regard to it is the un
studied. unsought results of its intrinsic
merits alone. Without parade, without
fictitious pruises heralded in advance, with
out the slightest attempt to forestall or pur
chase public opinion, it has assumed a po
sition never before occupied by|nny work
of art in this country. The flutter of pre
monitory excitement into which the town
was thrown by the announcement that this
was the last week, is in no manner to be
credited to any dictation on the part of
the world of fashion. Ii isjust ns spontane
ous ns the furore which Henry Clay excited
in the hey-day of his fame. Our citizens
have a remarkably just critical taste in
amusement matter. They have their rules
their canons, their decided opinions. The
bill of fare is well looked to before they
conclude to honor the banquet; and we
hazard no unwarranted conclusion when
we express our opinion, that the amuse
nier.t-going public firmly and conscienti
ouslv believe the entertainments afforded
bv Dr. Beale, are the best they possibly
can enjoy.
