Some four yetri ago the Union Society,
while under the preaidency of Joseph'»■
FaT, Esq., purchased the nite of Whit-
field! Orphan Hou«o «i Beiheado, com-
priaing about one hundred and twenty-five
•eree ofl.nd. Thie clinngo of loueiion
wm made with 'he double purpose ol
providing for the boyi under their charge a
retired, pleaiint and healthy home, and oi
tatting the practicability of a Farm School,
io which the beneficiaries of the Society
might not bo only educated, but might also
be taught practical agriculture, and by their
Industry contribute towards thbir own
support. The experiment has proved
highly autisfactory, and has demonstrated
thefgreat utility (and^importance ol Ruch
an inatitution in our section. The boys,
away from the temptations and demoralise
ing influences ol the city, are moro easily
controlled, are better satisfied with their
condition, more healthy, and in every re
spect one progressing more satisfactorily
than before their removal to Dethesda.
Encouraged by the flattering condition
and prospects of their school, and desirous
of extending the sphere of its usefulness,
the present board of managers, in pursu
ance of resolutions passed by the society
at ita last anniversary mooting, have in
contemplation the erection of a substantial
and durable edifice on tho eite of the Whit
field Orphan House, capable of accommo
dating at least one hundred beneficiaries,
with superintendent, teachers and their
families. To enable them to accomplish
this object, they appeal to the mombersof
the society and to their fellow citizens for
aid. In their circular they say :
“In locating tbs boys, ttbven in number, upon
this interesting spot iu 18u&. upon the principle of
a farm school, tho bulldlugs erected were of a tem
porary and experimental character, and being en
tirely Inadequate, and but illy adapted to the pur
poses and present prosperous condition of the So
ciety, and the building" wnlch were purchased with
the farm belpg in a dilapidated condition, it tw
proposed toe mmenoe Improvements, with a view
to permanency, greater seourity, and a more
tended utefulneM. These improvements are _
signed to be of a plain and substantial character,
bat oombining all the facilities and convert lendes
for maintaining and c inducting the Inatitution
in such a manner as to iuaure for It the deepest In
terest and most liberal fcupt ort of the member" of
the Society and the community In general.
It would be gratlfyiug Indeed, could the whole
design he commenced foriwtth, and carried regu
larly forward without delayer Interruption, until
completed. It le, however, confidently believed
that a sufficient sum will be promptly contributed
by the members and friends or tie Institution, to
enable the Board to erect the main portion of the
building of three stories ah proposed : comprising
Dining-room, ou the first floor, ^chool-rooui and
Assembly-room on the second, and Dormitory
the third.
It Is the purpose of the Board to carry out this
proposed improvement with funds raised entirely
outside of the present re-ources of the Sooluty—
these being only adequa e to the maintenance of
the Orphans now upon ita bounty—-and to com
mence the work as soon ns they feel warranted In
doing so from the subscriptions recoivrd. It Is
tbelr determination also that no debt or liability
of any kind shall be Incurred Imvond their reliable
meaor—ind to rigidly carrying out this deter
mination, to roof the building over at the *eeond v
or even at the first story, should they be compelled
from want of funds to do so.
*******
The oontemplated building, plans and
ealimateg for which have been prepared
and may be seen at the book-store of
Messrs. J. M. Cooper Sc Co.,will cos tabout
$30,000. The main portion of the edifice
can be built for leas than one«half that sum,
and as there is at this timo a pressing ne
cessity for increased accommodations, it is
proposed to put up the centre building
without delay, the wings to be added as
they are needed and tlie Society can ob
tain the meanB to enable them to com
plete their plan. Three thousand dollars
have already been subscribed towards the
building fund in subscriptions of $500 each,
and it is confidently believod thut a suffi
cient sum, to complete the main building
as proposed, will be promptly contributed
by our benevolent citizens, many of whom
are tnembera and zealous friends of the
Union Society. The circular from which
wa have extracted closes with the following
earnest appeal:
The board having thus laid before the
public its plans for the permanent improve
ment of the new “Orphan House" at Be-
thesda, the spot consecrated to charily
more than a century ago by the active be-
nevolence of George Whitfield, James
Habersham, Salina, Countess of Hunting
don t and others, they do not deem it neces
•ary to addross, even il they could mane, a
stronger appeal to the benevolence oi their
fellow-citizens, in favor of the noble chari
ty in behalf of which their efforts, as mem
hers and present managora of the Union
Society, are chee:fully given. They arc
willing that the character and history of
the Institution, the good that it haa accom
plished, and the good it seeks to accomplish
by the means proposed, shall entorce its
claims to the fostering solicitude and liberal
aid of the benevolent.
A committee of the Society will call
personally upon our citizens for their sub
scriptions in the course of a few days; and
as the duties and cares devolving upon the
officers impose a very considerable tax
upon the time of business men, it to hoped
that they will be promptly aided in their
•elf-imposed labors, and that the members
of the Society and the benevolent public will
receive their committee, and respond to
their call in a spirit of liberality and en
couragement worthy the benevolent objoct
for which their aid to invoked.
$9* There are at present about 1,000
Virginia troops encamped at Harper's Fer-
ry, where they will remain til alter the exe
cution ol Brown. Gov. Wise says he has
no feara of a rescue, but, under existing
circumstances, it is well to be in readiness
for any emergency.
5 ‘v Warned to Leavr.—From the Orange
burg (S. C.) Southron we learn that no
lees than foor individuals, “regarded as
rather obnoxious'* to the community, have
been ordered to leave the village within
the week past. One is a school teacher
and sort of preacher, by tho name nf Dt
Hkaglk, from the State of New York.—
Two others are house painters from the
same 8tate, and the fourth is a book agent,
named Day, who had just arrived in town,
and who did not wait for a second invita
tion to leave, but gave legbail instantor.
Rivca News,—The river yesterday, at
noon, was at lour Jeet seven inches. The
Starke arrived yesterday morning with a
full load. The attempt to raise the Excel
has thus far been unsuccessful, and it is
feared she will have to be abandoned.
The engine and machinery is now being
nut on board the new steam ferry boat, and
u will probably be ready for service in
about ten daye or two weeks,—Aubusta
Chronicle, 27 th.
The Undcboround Railroad in Op-
brat ion.—Last night the underground rail
road train arrived here with thirty passen-
gera, five from the vicinity of Richmond,
i ' KK• • 8 ^! ro1 ” Kentucky, and thirteen
from Missouri. They are now all safe in
Canada. The thirteen from Missouri were
sold to go down the river the very day they
stalwart six-footer and a
Sharp • rifle were their only guides.

Yankee Schoolmasters and Mis
tresses.—The Lynchburg, (Vo.) Republic
can, thus alludes to a subject of great and
vital importance to the Southern people :
“ One of tho greatest evils which afflicts
Southern society, to the employment
amongst us of Yankee schoolmasters and
mistress*-*. We would just as soon have
a rattlesnake in our house ns one of these
Yankco teachers. Nine-tenths of thorn,
in our deliberate opinion, tire sent to tho
South for the pupeee of indoctrinating our
children with their obominablo ideas of
Abolitionism, and all of them, in a greater
or less degroe, do teach such heresies in
some insidious form. Ynmcee school
boons and Yakce school teachers ought to
lie forthwith excluded from Southern
Territory by legislative enacttnenie. They
ore the greatest levers which Abolitionism
can employ id undermine and evchtually
overturn our institutions."
The NonTMAMProH Report.—The Richmond Dis
patch of Friday says: The report of a slave stam
pede to come off In Nort Hampton county, Va., or
iginated from an anonymous letter rarelved hy
Mr. Raliegh, of that county. In which * A Friend
of Humanity" states that an attempt will he made
at four places on the Eastern shore of Virginia,
lo-dav, (one of thorn bring Run go league,) to free
the slaves und send them off to Canada. Col. Mun-
ford. Secretary of State. has telegraphed to Nor-
fulk to semi d()() muskets, with ammunition, to
Col. Finney, of Ac omac.
In CharlottHvllle, a man from the North, named
Ro d. has been arrested on suspicion, and papers
found on him sufficiently Important to warrant his
imprisonment. In Danville a clerk at tint Post-
Offlre 81 w a man throw a letter, which he had just
gotten, Into the stove, and taking it out, found It
■ * a proposition for ruurilng off slaves. The
was arrested.
