Congressional. •
Washington, Dec. 13.—In the Senate,
to-day, Mr. Clay, of Alabama,* made a
speech in reply to the Republican Sena
tors on Mason’s Harpers berry resolu-
tion. He was conlident ol the election ol
a Black Republican President, which
would necessarily result in the dissolution
of the Union. The South were forewarned
and should bo pre-armed for the hour ol
lrl JlV Gwin, ol California, concurred in
all that Mr. Clay said, and hoped that the
Republicans would not continue to press
a course ol policy which could only end
disastrously to the Union.
Senators Hale and Wilson replied, reit
erating their heretofore expressed viojva,
after which the Senate adjourned.
In the House, Mr*Sickles, of New York,
mado a speech, showing that the South
had not compacts or compromises, and
expressing his bcliof that the patriotism ol
the North would ho aroused in defence ol
all her rights. ,
Mr. Adrian, of New Jersey, declared
that his State would not support the nom
inee of tho Charleston Democratic Conven
tion, unless an interpretation was given of
the platform of the party, in accordance
with tho views of Mr. Douglas, in regard
to slavery in the territories.
Mr. McRae, of Miss., made a humorous
speech, in which he maintained that the
Southern opposition should unite on Bo-
cock, thus putting the responsibility on
the anti-Locomptonitcsof electingaSpeak-
tr *Thero being no question boforo the
House, it adjourned. _ ___
JBQF* The steamship Augusta, Capt.
Woodhull, from Now York, arrived at
her wharf lost night at 10 o'clock. Pur
ser Hempstead will accept our thanks for
files ol New York papers.
AthentBum.
We were sorry to see so thin un at
tendance at the Athenmum last evening,
which must he attributed in part,at least, to
the fact that our public arc becoming wea
ried with the too frequent repetition of even
ihe Lady of Lyons, Mr. Fleming's Claude
Mellnotte was, in the three first acts which
we witnessed, a decided improvement on
his last personatiou of that character, his
acting being much more subdued and natu
ral.
Miss Coombs appeared to advantage ns
Pauline, but her personation of :lio char
acter was greatly marred by a defective
style of elocution, which shu should strive
to correct. With tho advantages of a
pleasing and expressive lace, graceful per
son, arid fine, full voice, she only needs to
school herself in the use of the latter,—or
in a word to bo more natural in time and
emphasirf—to enable her to attain a promi
nent rank in lior profession. The other
characters ol tho play were generally well
performed.
Ingomar, with a now larce, will bo per
formed to-night. Miss Coombs performing
the part of Parthenia.
Tup. Home Journal.—This old lavor-
ite—6y long odds the best literary publica
tion in the Union—begins n new volume
on the fret day of January next. It will
furnish during tho coming year a new ro
mance of American History, entitled
Genty ProudJ'oot, by a distinguished au
thor, and t a brilliant Venetian tale, by the
author of ‘‘The Romance of a Poor Yodns
Man.” Gen. Morris will continue his
popular songs and ballads, and Mr. Willis
nis “Photographs of the Hour.” No
more copies will be issued than are sub
scribed for, and those who wish to begin
with the new year, will do well to forward
their names at once. Terms, $2 a yenr.

Correction.—In our paper of yesterday
we stated that William Cullen, the keep
er of a Sailors' Boarding House, had been
up before his Honor the Mayor on a charge
of abducting certain sailors belonging to
the ship Admirhl. Mr. Allon Cullen re
quests us to state that our reporter was
misinformed. It appears that the last
named gentleman became surety for the
sailors, who, with a person known aa “one-
armed Charley,” had been committed to
jail. When iho case was called at the
Mayor's Court, the sailors failed to appear,
and their bondsman was allowed further
time to produce them; in default of which
his bond would be declared forfeited. Mr.
William Cullen, it appears, had nothing to
do with the matter, and we think it pro
per to make the correction.
P&T We invite attention to the adver
tisement of Farm for Hire, in this morn
ing's paper. It is situated convenient to
the city, and to an energetic man can bo
made a source of profit. J.

■lance, wo suppose, gave rise to the mis
take.
