Athenjrum.—Wo worn gratified to see
an improvement in tho audience laet night.
The play of Ingomor was very woll per
formed, Mr. Fimino’s personation of tho
love-lamed savage being one of his beet
performances. Miss Coombs’ rarthenia,
barring the fault in her reading, to which
we have boloro alluded, waa a very credi
table piece of acting. There is so much of
promise in this young lady, that all who
are capable of appreciating her talents
must feel an interest in her reformation of
a delect so prejudicial to her success as an
actress.
A good bill is offered to night—London

Tub V. S. Snip Iroquois.—We paid a

on board by Commander Palmer and his
gentlemanly officers in tho kindest and
most courteous manner.
Her appointed day lor sailing is to-day, at
II o’clock, but it is hoped that she will be
permitted to prolong her stay here during
the week, in order to give those of our
citizens who have not visited her the rare
opportunity of exploring the mysteries ol
the interior of a ah ip-of-war. White in

commander and officers will be pleased to
welcome all on board who desire to in*
spect her powerful machinery, internal ar
rangement and armament.

following commmunication from the Au

[communicated.]
To those in this community, who know
the writer of the subjoined letter, nothing
need be said in reference to it. As, how
ever, unpleasant and probably exaggerated
rumors liuvo beon in circulation, which,
under the present excited state of public
leeling, may work a deep injury to a wor
thy eitizen, where less known, his friends
in this city consider it but an act of justice
to ask its publication in the Conetitution-
olist :
Savannah, Dec. 10,1859.
Dear Friend:—l liave just received yours
of the 6th, stating that there are reports
in circulation of accusatious against me,
which you have denied on nty behalf.—
: Please accept my thanks for ynur kind
' friendship. You can lirmly, positively and
unequivocally refute, in my bctiali, any re
ports you may hear detrimental to my
character, ol being in ur,y manner, shape
or form, in any way sympathising with
Abolitionism or anti-slavery sentiments,
either by thought, word or action; and
ehallengo any one on my account, to pro
duce any thing to that effect. On the con
trary, every one that knows me, knows
that 1 have always been an advocate of the
institution of slavery in tho abatrnct; and
ultra on the8Ubject hero, and particularly
at the North, wlthre, in consequence ol my
being a southern man by adoption, I have
been assailod at all times when there, and on
every opportune occasion, and have, at all
times, and in all ways, defended tho righte
and interests ol the South to the utmost of
my ability, in public and in private. If 1
am to be thus ruthlessly assailed in ,the
dark, there is no security for any ono in
this community, but my firm, unshaken
reliance in the rectitude of my own inten
tions, the confidence in my friends, and the
mojesty of the law, do not, for a moment,
lead me to apprehend any very serious re
sults Irom the unfounded attacke made
upon me. My long residence in the cities
ot Auguste and Savannah, and intimate
relations with the citizens of both, and the
State at largo, together with my being e
slave owner for the past twenty-five yeere.
I trust, will be sufficient to shield my char
acter for the future. Verv truly yours,
Wm- O. Pbics.

ace Greeley—Sir: I heroby inform you
that 1 shall not, in future, delivor from tbte
office the copiea of the Tribune wbtoli

that incendiary character which are forbid
den circulation aliko by the lawe of tue
land, and a proper regard for the safety ol
society. You will, therefore, discontinue
them. Respectfully,
R. M. Glass, Postmaster.
REPLY I
Mr. Postmnster of Lynchburg, Ya.—Sir
I take leave to assure you that I shall do
. nothing of the eort. The subscribers to
the Tribune in Lynchburg have paid for
their papers; we have taken their money,
and shall fairly and fully earn it, according
to contract. If they direct us to send their
papers to some other Poatoffice, we shall
obey the request; otherwise, we shall send
them as originally ordered. If you or your
masters choose to steal eed destroy them,
that is your affair—af all events, not sura ;
aod if there is no law in Virginia to pun-
ish the larceny, so mueh the worse for her,
and our plundered subscribers. If the Fed
eral Administration, whereof you are tho
tool, after, rcynopoliziug the business of
mail carrying, sees lit to become tbe ac
complice and patron of mail robbery, I
suppose tbe outrage must be borne until
more honest and Jess servile rulers can be
pttt into high places at Washington, or till
the people can recover their natural right
to carry each other’s letter* and printed
matter, asking no odds of the Government.
Go ahead in your own base way. I shall
stand steadfast fu t human liberty and the
protection of all natural rights.
Yours, stiffly, Horace Greeley.

THE
Watch Question.
AMERICAN VS. FOREIGN WATCHES
A CARD.
TUB ONLY KNT1KBLY SATISFACTORY
PROOF OF A GOOD WATCH IS THAT IT TELLS
OORNKOXI.Y, AND WITHOUT INTF.HRBPTION,
TUB TRUK TISIB OF DAY. All other tents or.
lllu.-ory. If tho Watch will not perform equally
Itb accuracy, It is to no purpose whatever
that It la elaborately tint bed. that curious shupes
aud patented devices are adopted, tiiut novel es-
capemouts and Ingenious contrivances for compi n
satlon are Introduced, or that the whole Is covered
by u famous name and by a massive and costly
Hundreds of worthless Watches are beauti
fully finished, und Home are exquisitely contrived
badly and wear out quickly. A gr< at deal
of work Is most ot'ien a gioat dual of complexity,
and all will admit thut uo amount of more polhl
Will advantage any piece that is radically mal
formed or inexactly fitted. It Is SIMPLICITY OF
CONSTRUCTION, and such uiathjmutlcalcorrect
ness In the rlze and shape of every purt as the ap
plication of machinery to the purpose alone 1d-
sures, that, with sufficient nicety of finish, ac.om-
pllihes the desired result.
Tho founders and manure's of the American
Watch Company o Waltham are determined *.o
make TIM K-K KKPKR8, wheth er they make money
or not. They do not undervalue ornament, but
they feel that they cannot ov. rvalueTIMK. THIS
IS TUB MEANING OF THBIR WHOLE ESTAB
LISHMENT. Thcioagnly familiar, by practical
expel lence, with the evils Inherent in foreign
Watches—evils which all Watch doalers will bear
tlumi out In saying, render nearly wcrthlesa for nil
purposes of time hooping a large majority of for
eign Watches—they aim, through the substitution
of mechanical scLnce, for tho uncertain Judgment
of tlis eye aud Itnpe feet * kill of the hand, to p; o-
duce uu article that shall not only look like a
Watch, but perform the duties of a Watch, adorn
ing it with such a degree of llnl h us Is t-ufficlent.'
and which, through cost loess, will not put it at ove
the re.ich of auy cla9S In tbe community. AND
Til AT THEY HAVE DONE THIS, AND AUK DO
ING IT, they confidently appeal to the thousand,
whose dally coming and going Is regulated by Wal
tham Watches, to say. In every system, even the
best, thero will be imperfection, and lnstsuces ot
failure doubtless occur In the Waltham ruanufac*
tore, but In a system which produces Watches
which ure IDENTICAL, rather than bJMILAR,
the proportion of suoh must be reduced to a mini
mum.
Having achieved this decisive victory,—a victo
ry with a reason for It,—the American Watch
Company Id far from being dbappilnied ul. the fre
quent and unscrupulous opposition it moots Iroiu
many in the Importing buslueus. This opposition
was to have been expected, and the occasion of It
will be apparent to any cue who cousldtra the ex
tent of the Importer’s trade und Us highly prt flta-
ble character. The Company has no reason to bo
dissatisfied with the umount of patronage It tc
celves, since It Is obliged, by the multiplication o
orders, largely to lncrea>e Its force, and to work b:
night as well as day, but It Is net content that any
portion of the community tliould be misled
the real merit of Its watc ies. Unfortunately there
a no article In common use which people generally
so little understand as a watch, and a man’s watch
maker Is his only reliance for Judgment. Bo long,
therefore, as Imported watches yield a rich profit
to the Importer, the Company expects a good deal
of deersing and dlsporagement, wlte shaking of
the head and faint praise.
'the Company Is gratified to be able to say, how
ever, that there are hundreds In the trado whose
supreme Interest la notln importation,
stock on hand, who have no national antipathies to
an American Watch ; who. Indeed, from patriotic
motives, would r«ther distribute them, even Ifthey
woro not ttvice as sound and honest, and cheap as
auy other—wffh whom Waltham Watches may bo
found. The Company conlldtnily maintains that
Us Watches will abide the conclusive test of time
keeping, and upou that grouud It Is content to rest
Its c alms to the general patronage. The public
will bear In mind hat those Watches are made for
reputation, and with the responsibility of perpet
ual guaranty constantly lu view; for, however
they may change hands, wherever und whenever
tU*y are Ound faulty, tho Company Is bound to
tuuk.i H fin good:
CAUTION —As our Watch is now extensively
counterfeited by torelin manufacturers, we have
tolnfotm the public that no W’atch is of our pro
duction which Is u(.accompanied by a certificate of
genulneuess, bearing tbe number of tho Watch,
and signed by cur Treasurer, K. E. ROBBINS, or by
our predecessors, APPLETON. TRACY ft CO.
These Watches are for sale by Jewclo s
generally throughout the Union, w'e do not solicit
orders .for single Watches. For tho American
