ggy We publish in another column the lotto
of Hon. Rohkut Toomiw, In reply to the Macon
“alann9d” Committee, In which, It. will be seen,
while ho approves the action oft he seceding del
egates from the Charleston Convention, lie fa
vors their return to the same Convention when
it re assembles in Baltimore. Hon. ITstkr E.
Love has also written a letter to the same com
mittee, In which, after declaring hlmself-to be
• “the last man to condemn those gallant, true
hearted Southerners” who seceded from tlio Con
vention, nnd who, “If they erred at all, It was on
th? ddc of principle and truth’’—gives It as his
opinion that “the Richtnoud Convention should
he. postponed until after the adjourned Conven
tion at Baltimore is held, that tlio seceding dele
gates should resumo their places in the Haiti-
more Convention, and let another honest and
lYaternal effort ho mndo to harmonize upon a
platform and a candidate.’’
While nearly all whoso views have been elicit
ed by tho Macon “Alarmed” Douglas Commit
tee, agree In support of the principles set forth
in the imtforlty platform, and most ol them ap
prove the action of the seceding delegates, they
generally recommend that t he Richmond Con
vention shall be Ignored, anti that our delegates,
who wore driven IVom tho Charleston Conven-
ventluu by tho arrogant dictation of the Doug
las Squatter Sovereignty majority,' shall return
to the Convention at Baltimore, and again en
deavor to obtain tho Justice and right, which was
so Insultingly denied them In Charleston.
Wo are uuuble to seo any consistency, pro
priety or policy In such a course. Admitting
that all desire the re-cstubllshment or harmony
and concord in tho National Democratic Party,
for the maintenance of sound, constitutional
principles, of justice and equality to all sections
of the Unlou—ami surely no true democrat val
ues the party abovo principle—still we cannot
discover how the course proposed can he pronto-
tivo of the end deslrod. Tho Just position
which our delegates assumed In Charleston In
regurd to the piatfown of principles rejected by
the Convention, is one wlileli admits ot no com
promise or retraction, and It Is tlio duty, as we
believe U Is tho resolnto determination of tho
Southern pooplc, firmly and unitedly to sustain
‘ them in tliat position. Our uuLlori should give
the politicians oiiid people of the North to un
derstand that we arc determined to insist upon
the recognition of pur constitutional rights as
Ret forth in tho mi\)oHty pldtlbrm to tho last ex
tremity, and Without regard to cousequenees.
Thereturn ot our delegates to tlio Baltimore
Convention, or tho suhsLitutton of others in thoir
places, would afford them no evidence of such a
settled resolve on onr part. On the contrary, it
would be regarded as an evidence of liopcftil
Irresolution .and weakness, if not of humilia
tion and submission.
- Tho unity and liurmony of the democracy can
only be re-established upon a basis of sound nn-
tlonol principles. If this can be accomplished
ut ujlji it. is unnecessary that either party should
submit to humiliation.
Our delegates should meet at Richmond In
Xmrsuanco pf the resolution adopted in Charles
ton. Re affirming tho majority platform, they
/ should pledge the South to support any able,
Round, constitutional statesman, from whatever
section of the Unlou, who will give lift ftill and
unreserved endorsement of the principles there
in set forth. There would be no humiliation ot
Hi - Northern democracy In accepting such
terms of union aud co-operation. If they re-
lbsed, the Sonth vvould hnve made all the ovof-
I In her power. The Richmond Convention
"’ton make .Its nominations, ami the
States In the Baltimore Convention,

Hon. John Bbli.-Wc find the following in
the Now York Thnrn:
“In IKJMI, Mr. Bell alone or tho Tennessee
delegation, advocated the reception of Abolition
petitions, and was sustained by his constituents.
Iti 1H41 he became Secretary of War under Presi
dent Harrison, hut retired utter his dentil, and
remained in private life until 1H47. when he was
elected United States Senator, and rc-electcd In
185:1. lie opposed the Mexican war, supported
the Compromise measures of 1850, opposed the
Nebraska bill and the repeal of the Missouri
Compromise In 1854, and denounced the fte-
coinpton.policy of the Admlnlstrutltm In 1858.”
Our neighbor of the flepubttcan has not yet
placed tho names of Bki.l and Everett, tin*
nominees of Ills party, at the head of his
columns. Why does lie hosltato to toll Ills
Bell? Is he not satisfied with Its tone ?

nomination of Bell and Everett, and makes

The History op France. By Parke OodwiN.
Vol. I. (Ancient (hull.) New York: Harper
& Brothers. .Savannah: Jno. M. Cooper A C'o.
Tho design of this work contemplates a nurrV
live of tho principal events in French history
Ironi the earliest recorded times to the outbreak*
of the great revolution oi 1781ft The periods to
be described, according to tlio plan, are Ancient
Gaul, (embraced in the present volume,) termin
ating with the era of Charlemagne; Feudal
Franco, closing with St. Louis; France during
the national, civil and religious wars; France
under the great ministries (Sully, Mazarln, Rich
elieu;) tho Reign of Louis XIV; and the
Eighteenth Century. Of tho history of France,
the most historic of nil the great modern nations,
ihe American public in general is more Ignorant
perhaps than of any oilier. English historians
Imvc not furnished the needed Information, and
French histories are, to all Intents and purposes,
closed to tho general American render. Conse
quently we have cause to welcome this attempt
of Mr. Godwin.
THE JAPANESE EMBASSY.
Tho Recoptiou of tho Ambassadors ou board tho
Philadelphia-Yisit to Old Point--The Trip up
the Potomac.
Norfolk, May 14.—Tho following despatches,
Vom the Agent of the Associated Press, were
cut here yesterday from tho steamer Philadel
phia, prior to the departure of that vessel from
Hampton Roads, on her trip up to Washington
witlrthc Japanese Embassy :
Steamer Piiii.adei.imiia, Hampton Roads,
Jay lit,—After the transfer of the light luggage,
»(»xes of money and the treaty ease to ihcv.tcum-
t Philadelphia, the Japanese, with the excep
tion of the Ambassadors, came aboard, and
liorlly after all the commissioned officers from
Fortress Monroe arrived, ftastly, the boat with
lie Ambassadors left the Roanoke, amid the
.-iicfcring of the men who manned I he yards, and
she roar of seventeen guns, and the miisie of
both bands.
Thu distinguished nuictioiiurics were received
ou board the Philadelphia by C'npt. Dupont and
Mr. ftudynrd, and were shown their respective
state-rooms. A grand dinner was set out in the
principal saloon of the Philadelphia, which will
leave in a lew miuurcs,
[second despatch.]
Old Point, May 18.—Tho reception of the
Ambassadors, ami the dinner given them on the
Philadelphia, was a superb affair. Thu table was
ladcued Willi game, fish ami fruit, vegetables,
.•reams, Jellies, wines, etc., which were pronounc
ed by the Japanese to be well suited to their
appetites, ot which they gave ample evidence.
The Philadelphia left the moorings ql thqjto-
uuoke at 4.15 L*. M., uud landed at Old Point at
4.25, whore tho Ambassadors were received with
formal honors and a salute from the battery,
.md the music of the band.
The Ambassadors were escorted around the
parapet, their artists sketching almost every
thing inside, as well as the roads and shipping
outside with astonishing rapidity.
The officers at the post prepared a hasty table
of relVcshmeiits at the hotel, and at 11 o’clock tbe
visitors re-embarked with the santo honors ns at
lauding.
Tho Ambassadors and attaches appeared to be
ihdighted witli everything, and nothing has been
omlttudor lost sight of'bv the Naval Commis
sioners, the guests ami officers of the boat, tend
ing to satisfy tlielr curiosity, appetites or com;
fort, nor lias the least accident, Incident or omis
sion thus lhr occurred Interfering with the pro-
gmtmiio of the arriiugeinents or marring the
pleasure or tho distinguished visitors, in this
connection the reporter wishes to acknowledge
tho courteous attentions of the Commissioners
and others, who have afforded every facility re
quired, as well as to tlio officers of the boat for
many privileges extended.
Tho Arrival of tlio Ambassadors at Washington.
Washington, May 14.—At an early hour the
NsiVy Yard was thronged by a dense multitude,'
Including many ladles, and an intense excite
ment was everywhere exhibited.
The scene was most delightful. The perspec
tive ol verdant lillU ami trees, rendered addi
tionally beautiful by the freshness tmmrlcd by
the reeont. rains, with a clear and light sky above,
ami tings Hying in all directions in the pleasant
breeze, combined to render tho occasion most
Imposing.
About half-past 11 o’clock a gun from the Navy
Yard battery announced that the steamer was in
sight, whereupon there was a wild rush to the
wuarf. The Pfilladelphia soon approached, while
the Marine Bund, on the upper deck, played the
8tur Spangled Bauner.
There was a pauso off the wharf for about fif
teen minutes, until the arrangements''for landing
could he fully matured.
Mayor Hurret went on board the steamer and
was Introduced to the Ambassadors, extending
them a welcome In the name of the citizens of
Washington, to which they responded, acknowl
edging their thanks for tho honor and the com
pliment. ^ ^ ^

Sweet’s Tnfallihle Liniment for Horses Is
mi rlyal led by any, and in all cases of Lameness, aris
ing from Sprains, Bruises or Wrenching, its efi’cct is
magical and certain. Harness or Saddle Galls,
Scratches, Mange, It will also cure speedily. Spa
vin and Ringbone may be easily prevented and cured
lit their incipient stages, but confirmed eases are be
yond the possibility of a radical cure. No ease of the
kind, however, Is so desperate or hopeless but It muy
lie alleviated by this Liniment, aud its faithful appli
cation will always remove the Lameness, amt cnanle
Dm horse to travel with comparative ease.
Every Itorse owner should have this remedy at
hand, for Its timely use at the first appearance of Lame
ness will ctfcct ually prevent those formidable diseases
mentioned, to which all horses are liable, and which
render so many otherwise valuable horses nearly
worthless. See advertisement.
