FATAL EaSrOA*ACCIDENT!
Three.Foraons Killed 1!
We learn from passengers on the Florldabonts,
that u distressing railroad accident occurred on
the Florida Road, between Lake City and Jack
sonville, on Thursday night last, resulting in tho
death of threepefsons, and the wounding of sever-
. nlothcrs. The only particulars wo can gather nro
that the train ran over some eattlo, and was
.thrown from tho track. The passenger ear was
Immediately: behind the tender of the locomo

box cars, loaded ...with lumber. These were
thrown into the passenger ear, crushing It al

and dangerously wounding several others. The
killed were CoI. D. L. Brtail cashier of tho

Tho Into State convention of the democracy
of Alabama, sny» tlio Washington Constitution,
held to appoint delegates to the Nattoual Con
vention of tlio democratic party, Instructed
those delegate* to withdraw IVom that body In a
certain contingency, wltloh has occurred. The
Staid convention, at tho snmo time, contempla
ting tho withdrawal of their delegates, appointed
a committee, consisting of Messrs. T. L. Toiil-
min, E. D.Icing, J. Withers Cloy, T. H. Hobbs,
W. H. Forney, J. A. Elmore, and E. C. Bullock,
with Instructions to call a new State, convention
In that event. This committee have,* according
ly, burned a call for the democracy of the State to
elect delegates to a StAla convention, to bo held
at Montgomery on tho dtli of June, and the de
mocracy Iiavo already beguu to move hi primary
meetings in response to the call. Tho conven
tion will In due season meet, and express the
voice of the democracy' of Alabama on tho course
of their delegates at Charleston, and on the
course which they, tho democracy of the State, 1
will now pursue. Their decision on the subject’*
will and must bo respected; There is no other
orgau through which the voice of tho State can
he heard.
We observe, however, a despatch stating that
“thirty-live leading and prominent gentlemen of
Mobile sign a call for a State convention to meet
at Selina on the 4th of June to select delegates
to Baltimore.” This movement Is the newest
and aptest illustration of squatter-sovereignty
doctrines that wo can lay onr hands on, and ac
tually reduces the theory to practice. What
power have citizens of Mobile, or of uny other
portion of the State, to usurp the authority dele-,
gated by the State convention of the Alabama
deniooraey, and actually exercised by those to
whom It was thus delegated? Certaluly no
principle hut that of squatter sovereignty can
possibly countenance any such usurpation; aud
as Alabama has emphatically repudiated the
doctrine as applied to the Territories, It will
most surely reject its application within the very
boundaries of the Statu Itsell.
The meeting which will take place under this
call will be but an assembly of the few and scat
tered representatives ol squatter sovereignty
that are to lie found -in Alabama, and will not
have the slightest authority to speak iu the name
of her trqo democracy. Tho delegates whom It
limy appoint will, of course, be bogus, and can
participate In no convention undertaking to rep
resent tlio democracy of the States.
Tho People MovingJ—Cherokoe Waking Up!
Tho Mountains Respond to tho Seaboard!
We are permitted to make the following ex
tracts from a letter received here yesterday, from
a distinguished Democrat of Cherokee, Georgia,
and a delegate to the Charleston Convention :
“ Cass county has lmd a mectlngnnd Col. Mahk
Johnson writes me Unit our friends were trium
phant by an overwhelming majority. Our meet
ing will lie held on the 88d, and I feel confident
that we shall he equally triumphant In Floyd
county. It Is certainly very nearly a unit here.
In Gordon, Col. Fain assures me that all the
people are with us. In Whitfield, Hauden as
sures me that the great mass of the people are *
with us. In Catoosa they have held public dis
cissions at court this week. Judges Harden
aud Chook spoke for the sucudcrs, and Judge
Wuigiit for DouoisAs and tho Squatters. The
feeling was almost unanimous in our favor there.
Ill Gilmer county they have declared for tho
course of the secedcrs without opposition. Col.
Chastain and Col. Phillips, the Solicitor Gen-
end, were our champions nt that court, and tho
indications are equally favorable in tho surround-
!ug counties, from which I have heard.”
“We aro active; all of our men arc in the field,
aud we will send our best und most reliable men
to the Juno Convention. I can nssure you that
the people of this section are genemlly aroused,
and everywhere aro with us, aud for the rights of
the South." .
The .Florida Democracy Will Sustain the 8e-
coders.
A prominent citizen of Florida, iu a letter to
the editor, enclosing his suhserlptlofi, says:
“The attitude assumed by the Afoot,'with re
ference to tho recent occurrences at Charleston,
claims my heartiest commendations. So far us
Florida-is concerned, her Democracy are united
hi sentiment—her returning delegates have been
universally greeted with one lotid shout of wel
come applause. We feel, that for the first time,
the* fit he has been distinctly tendered to the
South, and having been accejttcd by our State, wo
feel that we are ivnnnitted before the world to
the maintenance of our cause. The irntb is rtln-
gle; the verdict must be utnjuaUJlcd. The “Ten
nessee resolution” Is looked upon here as be
low contempt ;• it Is hooted at as a luw dodge—a
miserable humbug—a half-way house, designed
to accommodate loiterers on the way, and such
us are alllicied with weak perves and question
able patriotism. If I know the sentiments of
our people, there will be no bucking down; no
shrinking from consequences; no dallying with
specious, deceptive and hollow compromise*.
Now. 'that the Udtle in begun. where otunds the

Ho! Fon Baltimore.—-From the East,*the
West, the North and the South of Georgia, the
tidings continue to reuch us that the Democracy
of the “Empire Statu of tho South” are in favor
of unjou, harmony and the Baltimore Conven
tion. 'Thu primary meetings being held in the
different parts of the Suite, where u full and free
discussion of the whole question is had, are in
favor, almost without exeepliou, of sendiug
delegates to the Millcdgcville Convention, mi-
shackled by instructions ns to platforms, insist
ing-only upon lliclr urging upon that Stute Con
vention that the delegates be sent to the Balti
more Convention ou the 18tlf of June liext.
Tho abo.vc, which wo clip front the Atlauta
Intelligencer, an intense Squatter Sovereignly
journal, betrays cither uuparrailclnd Ignorance
or a wilful intention to misrepresent facts. If
meetings liuve been held anywhere in Georgia,
except in Atlanta and Augusta, whose action
was favorable to Baltimore, wo have not heard
of them. On tho contrary, meetings have been
lioid In Chatham, Wayne, Ware, Liberty, McIn
tosh, Effingham, Cass, Gilmer, Burke, Muscogee,
and mauy other counties, which have unquali
fiedly endorsed the Secedcrs nnd declared In far
vor of Richmond. Tho extracts from a letter
which wo publsh elsewhere, show that almost
the entire Cherokee section is with us. If our
Squatter Sovereign cotomporarles will only
"tote fair” we have no fears of the result.
Our readers will uot be surprised to learn that
the article, of which wo havo given the opening
paragraph, contains also the following:
At present ieehave really nothing to complain of.
