Exoanion OverthoMoln Trunk.
On Friday morulug last, a llulo alter aevcil
o’clock, a special train, conveying Governor
Brown, President Sorrvbn, several or the
Board of DIrcctors.of the Savannah, Albany. A
Gulf Railroad, and oibor citizens, left thu depot
lnlhla city for a trip of Inspection over the
Main Trunk Road to Its prcseul terminus, on
the western bank of the Alataiuidia. The day was
pleasant, and the trip a most delightful one.
The tralu was put through with good speud.ijuvc
when portions of the work were passed over
slowly In order to give the company an opportu
nity to Inspect It. Passing the town of Stock-
ton, which has the appearance of a very thriving
place, the train crossed the river to the pulnl
where tho hands are engaged In laying down the
Iron rolls. Leaving tho cars the Company spent
it low mlnutos In watching tho progress of the
work, which la being steadily pressed forward
under the personal supcrlntendenoa of Mr. Ed
ward Law, of this city, after which they re
turned to tho cars, where uu excellent lunch hud
been set out for their roft-eshmeut. The home
ward run was mostly performed In thu ' night,
and the train reached thu depot n little before
one o’clock.
Gpv. Brown expressed himself well pleased
with the construction of thu road and the gener
al system of economy which prevails in Its man
agement. The road Is one of the host, ns It Ih
destined to be oue of the most Important works
of Internal Improvement In the State. It Is now
. Just entering the fertile region of country for
which it Is tu be the outlut to the Atlantic, uml
already there are grntllylug indications—In the
springing up of new towns, the Increase of popu
lation and the enhancement of thu value of
lands—of the great benefit which the road will
ho to this long neglected portion of our State.
The irou Is now laid and tho cars running to
tho western bank of the Altamulm, a distance ol
one hundred and forty-two miles from Savannah.
School Pio-Nio.—Thu little children attached
to Miss Fanny M. Sinclar’s excellent prlmury
school, corner of Broughton nud AJtorcom-sls.,
had a very pleasant plc-iilc party on Friday, In
tho t-eautllhl grove west’ of tho city, nuar Mr.
Sttlrs’ brick-yard. Tho most ample prepara
tion of tho grounds for their accommodation had
been made. Mr. Spooner, of Hamden's Ex
press, with his'usual spirit .of accommodation,
conveyed tho little people to and fl-oin thu plat*
in the wagons of the Company. About 1 o’clock,
u bountiful repast, supplied by thu parents or the
children, was Bproad beneath thu shade uf the
live oaks, to which the children nud their invited
guests,, with appetites sharpened by their open
ulr exercise and enjoyments, did ample justice.
A pleasant Incident of the day was tho prcacu
tation of a very beautiful gold bracelet to Miss
Sinclair, from liqr lUtle pupils. The bracelet
- was presented by Muster Sandy Stevenson, on
behalf of his little sehoolmuteB.
After tho presentation, tho school behijfus-
sembled, the children went through various ex-,
erclsca of 'singing und declamation, In which
they acquitted themsolvcs lu u .manner highly
creditable both to themselvea ami to their very
capable and worthy preceptress.
Tho balance of the day was spout In spurts
aud gambols In tho woods, and -the children re
turned to tho city In the evening without uciY
dent, well pleuaed with the day’a enjoyment.
Among the Invited guests were the Young
Republican Blues, whose'Hold music and uni-
forms added much to the Interest of the ocea-
slon. ••■■■■-■ • .
