SAVANNAH DAILY MORNING NEWS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 23, 1860.
Stkamsuip Alabama.—The steamship Afa*
lama, CapU Sciiknck, from Now York, arrived
at her wharf yesterday morning at 10 o’clock.
Purser TibdaLIi has our thanks for favors.
Latter from Col. A.B. Lawton.
We (.have only time to Invite attention to the
able, sound anil patriotic letter of Col. A. It. Law-
ton,In response to the Macon Committee, which
’ will bo found on onr first page. It Is unnecessary
for us to state to the readers of the Mourn that the
positions token by Col. Lawton arc precisely in
accordance with tho views whleli we have
steadily maintained ns regards the proper course
to be pursued by our State In the present cinei -
gency.
In our opinion It Is the best letter, and coincs
more frilly aud fairly up to the questions at issue,
than any that has been elicited by tho committee.
It will be secu that Col. Lawton cordially ap
proves aud endorses the action of the seceding
delegates, and Is In favor of sustaining the posi
tion assumed by them lu honor uml good faith
with our sister cotton States In convention at
Richmond. Wc feel confident that the views he
advances will be approved not only by the Demo
cracy of Georgia, but by a largo majority of our
citizens of oil parties.
The Spiiu?'Moving.—We publish elsewhere,
from the Mucon Tdcyruph, a very meagre ac
count. of tho Democratic meeting In Macon on
Saturday night last, from which it will be seen
that the course of tho seceding delegates nt
Charleston was endorsed by an overwhelming
majority. This Is most gmtiiying news, and
shows that the people arc moving In earnest,
and that even In Macon, the home of the “alarm
ed" committee, the action of the Southern dele
gates at Charleston has been triumphantly vin
dicated.
By the same mall wc received the equally grut-
„ Jtying Intelligence that Atlanta lmd also nobly
ftpoken lu favor of the sccedcrs by a largo and
decisive majority. ‘Resolutions were passed
heartily approving and unqualifiedly endorsing
the conduct of the Georgia seceding delegation;
repudiating Squatter Sovereignty uml Douglas,
and declaring that tho motto of a united 8* nth
should. bo “no morecompromise* of Constitution
al rights." B. C. Yanckv, B. M. Smith, F. W.
J. Bn.L, W. T. Wilson and T. C, Howard
were appointed delegates to represent the De
mocracy of Fulton county In the approaching
Democratic State Convention, and they
^Instructed to insist that the wiuic delegation
which represented the State of Georgia at
Charleston ho confirmed its delegates to repre
sent the State again in any Convention they
may be directed to utteud.
So far, woJbellcYc, Richmoud aud Taliaferro
cotuitics arc “alone In tbelr glory." Every oth
er county meeting, to the best of our Knowl
edge, has declared lu favor of the seceders.
Squattor Sovereignty tp bo Substituted for tho
Wilmot Proviso.
[From the Providence (1LI.)Post,]
It was only a week or ten days ago, that we
announced that Mr. Grow, Chairman of the Com
mittee onTerritorlc*, iu the Qouse of Repre
sentatives, had reported bills for the organiza
tion or five new Territories, namely—Chippewa,
Ducotuh, Idaho, Nevada, and Arizona. To each
of these bills was attached a W11 mot Proviso—
a clause prohibiting slavery In the Territory.
Ln*t Friday these bill* came up for considera
tion, and every one of them was laid on tho tu-
blo*-nyes 102, noes 79. Wlml is remarkable, the
motion to lay on the table was made by n notori
ous nntl-slavctw man, Hon. Ell Thayer, of Mas
sachusetts. Mr. Thayer carried with him*sever
al Republicans, and these, added to the entire
Democratic strength, and the Southern Opposi
tion, accomplished the work.
Mr. Thayer bream a concert to the jktpnlur tor-
trelgHtydaetrtnef^meml yean ago. lie knete, an
iiyll an fir knew hi* own existence, that the 117hoot
IVoeiso w.im not needed to keep tin eery out qf these
Territories. He therefore determined to send the
bills to (lie table, and rim the risk of passing
others, if it should lie deemed desirable, ham it on
the ixtpular sovereignty doctrine,
Mr. TifAYRK is a sensible man, (If a Black Re
publican can be reckoned a sane man.) Dels
what they call down East acute limn, nud knows
Hint Squatter Sovereignty Is equally ns effective
and a much more convenient means of excluding
the South from tho territories than would lie the
Wllinot Proviso. It 1q very evident that tho
Black Republicans have determined to steal Mr.
Douglas’ thunder, and that Skwaud and hi*
“Irrepressible conflict” will bo forced to give
place to Lincoln and 8quntter Sovereignty, ns
the more popular and practicable weapons with
which to fight slavery out of the territories, and
ultimately out of the Union. Wo commend Mr.
Tuaybu’s policy to the earnest consideration of
our Squatter Sovereignty friends in Georgia.
