spite the threatening weather, and wo have ....
recollection of ever having seen the negroes enjoy
themselves more heartily than on thjs occasion.

Thu procession was formed on the Buy, and
marched thence up the Buy to West Broad street,
up West Broad to South Broad, thence to the
Firemen’s Hull, corner of Abercorn, where they
were reviewed by the Mayor and Aldcnuon.
At half-past four, Mr. Ccmmj.no ami the other
memhers-of the Deportment met a number of
friends at their hall, and entertained litem With
that warmth , of hospitality which characterizes
the flremen of Savannah. Among the guests
was Mayor Arnold, who, in response to a senti
ment of Mr. Cummino, made one of the happi
est and most appropriate spccclics we have over
listened to. He closed with a characteristic sen
timent :
“ The Element of Southern Pi-v»i>eritn: AlYlcai.

muscle, directed by Caucasian brain.
Different sentiments called various gentle
men to their feet, who responded In the hupplcst
manner. A toast from Mr. Cummino, the Chief
of the Department, to the health of the Firemen
of Augusta, brought to his feet Mr. S. S. Jones,
lor years an uctlrcund iullueutlnl member ofihe
Augusta Fire Department, and ex-Captatn of Hie
Georgia Independent No. 1, wlio replied In appro
priate terms. We aro pleased to know that Mr.
Jones la now a resident of Savannah.
These annual ptgndes of the Fire Department
and their consequent ro-unlons of thu llrctnon
and their Mends, are among the notable events
of our time. Nowhere besides Savannah .Be
tlioro to be found so largo and orderly a body ol
colored Bremen, and under such ndutlmble con
trol, or a more gentlemanly or efficient set ol
officers than those composing' the Savannah Fire
Department, t.qng may they, wave, and may the
time he not Ihr distant when we shall Imve more
of “the AiHcnn mmole” to be “directed by
Caucasian biffins.” ' 1
