~Letter from Bx-Oovernor McDonald.
Wo Invite tlio ntlcntlnn of our rcmtcra to tlto
nble letter of ox-Govcrnor Citab. J. McDonald,
lu our paper tble morning. It will bo aeon that
be not only approves the course of (lie acceding
delegates In Charleston, but he adduces the most
conclusive reason why tholr action should be en
dorsed by tlio people of the South. He shows
clearly the distinction between tlio protection
denied to.the South and Congressional Interven
tion, proving that protection against Squatter
Soverclgnty Intervention against slavery In the
Territories, is an essential and Indispensable ele
ment of non-lntvrvontlon, without which It
would be n mockery and a cheat.
Gov. MoDonai.I) also shows, lu his argu
ment, the uncertainty nml danger of relying
upon the Drcd Scott decision or the decision*
of the Supreme Court, without a recognition of
the principles contended for In the majority
platform.
The letter Is worthy of Its distinguished au
thor, and Is one of the most convincing viudl-
catlous of the sccedcrs that we have yet seen,
and wo only wish that It might bo rend by every
voter In the slave States.
Book of Poems.
We have received {Tom the talented young au
thoress, Miss Cauiur Utu.t.E Sinci.aiu, a neat
volume, comprising selections from her poetical
composltlqns, most of which have appeared in
the periodicals of the day, where they have
been much read and admired. We liuve read
many-of her poems with pleasure, and could,
had we room for selections, point out many
beauties of poetic thought and expression. We
have room here only for a single stanza front the
touching poem entitled “ 3Ty Father'*. Grave "
“Father niy heart Is sad to-night,
No gentle form is near
To hoar my heart's deop-smothered sigh,
Or check the rising tear;
Tlio gontle moonbeams linger near.
Vet shed no my or light:
Tho*> beam* are reding on thygrare—
I cannot call them bright."
A tone of melancholy pervades most of her
pieces, which may perhaps lie attributed to her
early orphanage, so touchingly alluded to in the
little pocta from which we have situated. The
merit of the little volume before us Induces us
to hopo that her success In authorship will lit.
spire a more cheerfnl caste of thought.
The volume is appropriately dedicated to Hon.
Ai.exanhek If. Stephens, to whom llienuibor-
ess vety gracefully acknowledges lu r obliga
tions for the means of Its publication.

A Journey Under Paris.
A correspondent of a Swedish Journal furnishes mi
Interesting ucconut ofa subterranean voyage made
through uae of the admirably cpustruetml sewers of
Furls.- the boat, which conveyed thu party, wa*
reached by descending a flight of slops to tlio dent It of
ubont forty-live feet. The boat, u llatdioitomed all'nlr.
was lighted by four nuips. The sewer Is mi archway,
aneeu feet high, nud or equal breadth, with a ditch or
canal about Wit feet tvldo, wliuruin nil Hie dirt ami tilth

which, togoUier, are about four feet wide. Thc'wliok-
Is built of beautlhil wblto sandstone, and is kept re
markably neat and cleau. No stench or had smell
was perceptibly. The densur portion or tho tilth Is
carried away through largo drains heueoththo side
walks. Tho sidewalks ure excellent, and exhibited
no signs of dampness, whllo tlio walls or the archway
are kept whitewashed, and ure at all times ns while a*

pcrtiuH of an iinnionuo speaking tubo, tlio workmen
being able to converse nt the distance of two miles
Irani each other. '1 lie echo is very strong nml lasting.
The fabric Is said to be built after a monel tff the enta-
combs of Rome, aided by all tbo lntost improvement:*.
On both sides, at about two hundred yards distune*
from one Another, nro openings through which the
workmen cm) ascend by means of permanent iron lad
ders, in case a sudden rain storm should enusu the
watur to rise above tho sidewalks, which is, howover,
of rare occurrence.
The couteuts of tho sewors, of course, flow Into
the river Seine, and the current is sufficient to carry
the boat used along with considerable velocity. Largo
reservoirs ore constructed at Intervals, iuto which
the water can be turned Tor a short time, In case ll
should be necessary to have tho cannl dry for a little
while. Tho whole work wub completed In two years.
Besides the main canal there nro rnauy minor ones

can be made to communicate with one another.--
