lion of the Governor-General lias been directed
to tho undisputed fact that the Chinese were
taken on bonrd thee vessels lying at Wlmmpoa
by foreoor fraud, against the positive rule at tin-
port of Canton that they should be shipped only
ut that place.
Minister Ward says that no American house
will have any connection wit h the I raffle, lint un
fortunately ready agents are found among tliu
English and other merchants of Hong Kong.
Amorlcnn vessels nre chartered by subjects oi
oilier governments, ami so odious Inis become
the truffle by recent transactions, that other gov
ernments have either forbidden their vessels to
bo engaged in It, or so restrained and regulated
It as to throw It entirely Into the hands ol the
Americans. , , , .....
Mr. Ward expresses the earnest hope tlmt Con-
gre-s will pass a law to punish such offences,
which obstruct the fhlthlul execution of our
treaty stipulations. He says that the horrors of
tliu c'oolle truffle, us conducted ut Whampoa,'can
not be properly described within the limits of a
despatch. The kidnapping grievance has be
come so Intolerable tlmt the (lovcFiior-Geiieral

Nothing strikes us so much as the want of re

prevent being spat upon at all times. Tho cus
tom of wearing one sword, it seems, originated
from this cause, as it enables you to avoid with
greater facility tlio saliva of your neighbor.—
Chewing tobacco is much prized, it seems, from
the saliva it produces, which is preserved, when

the others, and tlielr silence lias to be nought at
