charged with an assault and battery, with intent t,

They were alt bound over to keep the peace, hut

fi-lemls assart that the Southern Senators con
cede that ho will bo nominated, at Baltimore—
that North Carolina will glvo hint six nnd a half
votes on tho Ural ballot, nnd that Alabama and
Georgia will,'ve hint s majority of each delega
tion on the ll.-st ballot: but tills calculation la
made upon the basis that the old delegates will
be ruled out, mid that new delegates will be ad
mitted from those Stales. The ground taken by
tho opponents of Dougins Is that the Conven
tion Imvo no power to rule out the old dele
gates unless the people of their several dis
tricts oppose thelriieiluu at Charleston ami clod
oilier delegates.
No doubt, Mr. Doi.-oi.as will lie nominated at
Baltimore, but It will not be by the aid of the
votes of the legitimately appointed delegates
of Alabamn or Georgia. Nor will the Con
vention at Baltimore, while it adheres to its
Squatter Sovereignty platform, be under the
necessity of “ruling out the old delegates."
Tho State Conventions of the seceding States
will save the Convention that trouble, by in
structing tbolr delegates to go to Richmond, III
pursnauce or the rcxplvc of tho scceijcrs' meet
ing In Charleston. Mississippi has dcelurcd for
Richmond—South Carolina lias declared for
Richmond 1 -Georgia will do the same by her
Convention which meets on Monday—and Hie
example of these Slates will be followed by
Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Florida and
Texas. At Klchmoud the Cotton States, having
rc-uOIrmcd the majority plntform, will consider
the probabilities of a reconciliation, uml with
the lights before them, will determine whether
to awult the action of the Baltimore Convention
before making their own nominations.

Gan the South Return to the Baltimore Coat
volition.
If we are to judge from the tone of the Dora
las organs ,there is no desire cm the part of Ids
supporters to rc-unite with the Southern Demo
crats, nor any prospect for an adjustment of the
difficulty which originated in the Charleston
Convention, on a basis that can possibly be ac
ceptable to the South. The Washington State*,
which is understood to speak the sentiments of
Mr. Pouglas, says:
RiStt s,;w.£s r, rsaisj i

means ol a piece of poetry, written by her while
There’s music in tim summer
That waft the lover’s sigh,
Through coral reeds that gently bend,
Then pass them Idly by.
There’s music in the rippling brook,
That o’er the pebbles strays;
That gushes from each llowery nqok,
Rqiolcing on its way.
There’s music In the plashing waves
That dance in the moonlight beams
And in those soft nnd magic stratus
That come to us In dreams.
There’s music in the minstrelsy
TJiat issues from the grove—
Vet dearer, sweeter, far than these.
Is the voico of those wo love.

proposition to return to the Baltimore Conven
tion, and seek admission at the hands of those
whoso fellowship they repudiated at Charleston.
Their sense ol' houor and propriety recoils at
the base suggestion. The mtue platform against
which they rebelled stilt remains the established
creed qf the party. They cannot return wit hout'
admitting tuoy were wrong in seceding, and If
they make this humUlaliuy admission, how date
they, in the presence of the assembled multitude
that will be at Baltimore, hold out, with a lac*
* tlous opposition to the majority, ami again se
cede, and thereby break up the Convention for
adhering to the same platform ?
The mere suggestion is a rthuke to those who
seceded, and should he resented by those gentle*
Lien os an iusult. No! they cannot and wIU not
return. They seceded on a principle. They se
ceded because they were irreconcilably hostile
to the doctrine of nonintervention as proclaim
ed by the Democratic party In 1850, and rc-atn rul
ed at Charleston In 1860. They have dissolved
their connection with the Democratic party/or-
<twr.and formed nnew. one. confined ton few
of the Southern States, and looking to a South
ern Confederacy as their last and only hope.
In another article, headed “Down with the lie-
bcUion,” the editor exclaims: “This Is tho senti
ment which animates ctfery patriotic Democrat
within the embrace of the Union. The language
of the true men of the party, which made a Jef-
ferson, a Madison, a Monroe, a Jackson, a Polk,
a Pierce, and a Buchanan President, is, emphati
cally, political death to all disorganize!*—uo
quarter to the Charleston rebels.”
Another leading Douglas paper, the Cincin
nati JBnquircry commenting on that part of Judge
Benxikg’s letter, In which he proposes to send
delegates “to attend-'both the Richmond and
Baltimore Conventions,” characterizes It as au
“audacious proposition.” This article is repub*
residing in a neighboring city, and published in
the local paper of the place. The article, signed
by a fict icious name, was seen by the gentleman,
and so much admired tlmt lie wrote to the ad
dress, and tlte correspondence thus begun was
kept up ibr nearly two jraars, uudhas resulted as
above.—Lowell (Mass.)

TO HORSE OWNERS
Sweet’s Infallible Liniment for Horses Is
unrivalled by any, and in all cases of Lameness, aris
ing from Sprains, Bruises or Wrenching, its effect is
magical and certain. Harness or Saddle Galls,
Scratches, Mange, &c., it will also cure speedily. Spa
vin nnd Ringbone may he easily prevented and cured
in their incipient stages, but confirmed cases are be
yond tlie possibility of a radical cure. No case of the
kind, however, is so desperate or hopeless but it may
be alleviated by this Liniment, and its faithful appli
cation will tilwuys remove the Lameness, aud enable
tho horse to travel with comparative ease.
Every horse owner should have tills remedy at
hand, I
Its timely use at the first appearance of I.
ness will effectually prevent those formidable discuses
mentioned, to which all horses nre liable, and which
render so many otherwise valuable horses nearly
worthless. See ndvertlsemen I.
